  1. Herman Cain seems like a straight up guy and I look forward to hearing more from him.
  2. Austin, I tried the same spot you are suggesting and found it only works flying solo, and you have to look too far down. I clamped to the bars under the panel, but ultimately gave up on that idea.
  3. If they can get insurance for the event...I will go.
  4. I doubt there are any takers at the price they want in this economy and market. It's cheaper to buy a plane with a turbo.
  5. I did it once without realizing it. Not a big deal.
  6. I have the dual magneto and it gives me that warm, gooey feeling that only 5k can buy.
  7. Area 51 had a 23,000 ft runway, but it is currently closed and the longest one they now use is 12,000 ft (or so says Wikipedia). The longest runway we have in SoCal is Victorville at 15,050 x 150, where I first practiced landings in an Mooney M20C. We also have Mojave Spaceport at 12,503 x 200 ft and San Bernardino is a healthy 10,000 x 200. Naturally, I'm kidding about needing a runway that long.
  8. I try not to land on runways under 23000 feet, but the government discourages me from landing at Area 51. Mitch and Jolie have been successful at proding me into landing at Oceano, and I reckon I used less than 1800 feet (with a leisurely, very light, braking rollout).
  9. The funny thing is I actually tried the RAM base between the seats (didn't fit), the steel shaft that bends (seemed okay until I went on a flight, and then it would move due to the weight of the iPad), and various lengths with the rods that aren't made to bend, in different locations. I didn't have luck with any of those solutions.
  10. I tried the flexible RAM mount and found that it wasn't stable enough.
  11. I'd prefer a 7" solution, but not even my Viliv X70 with Anywhere Map Pro satisfies (better software, but not nearly as bright as the iPad). The new Garmin aera 796 looks cool, but pricey as per Garmin's S.O.P. http://sportys.com/Pilotshop/product/16808?utm_source=PilotShop&utm_medium=email&utm_campaign=A11092A&utm_content=mainBanner
  12. If you are referring to the magnetic 2nd generation iPad cover, no you don't have to remove it to fit it in the Sport NR. Naturally, any other back cover would have to be removed.
  13. Well, I used the WingX SV on a recent trip to Tahoe and it pretty much worked as advertised. I saw a lake on the SV and when I looked out the window, there it was. That said, I don't have the optional AHRS to give gyro info: http://www.aviation.levil.com/AHRS_mini.htm It's a little odd not seeing the horizon tilt when I bank. I'm thinking of getting that feature as soon as I determine that the SV isn't just a gimick. Then again, it may just be slightly above a gimick until I buy the AHRS mini...
  14. Okay, so I have tried every mounting solution under creation, even special ordering RAM products not found on the shelves of Aircraft Spruce. I started with the traditional RAM yoke mount and found it got in the way during landing. Not that it couldn't be done, it just wasn't ideal. So, I tried about a thousand different alternative methods, but ended up going back with the RAM yoke mount. If only there was something similar, but more refined. Then I saw this... http://mygoflight.com/shop-all-product-list/ipad-mounts/ the new Sport NR yoke mount, which I could use with most of my RAM adapters. I also had to buy the Sport Adapter, but that was kind of the point. I figured it would allow me to quickly remove it for landings, etc. So tonight, I went down to the airport and tried it out. To my surprise, it fit better...quite a bit better. My hands now could fit more easily on the yoke, and it seemed a bit lighter. It pivots with a flick from vertical to horizontal and can be removed quickly. What I didn't expect is that I might not need to remove it. Now, I haven't had time to fly with it, but this could be the solution.
  15. Light corrosion on the landing gear is to be expected, and is something most people are constantly taking care of.
  16. I'm not sure I understand the specific question? If you're wondering if you'll fit, of course, but go ahead and sit in your relative's plane. I'm amazed someone 4'11 can fly a Mooney. She must have some serious rudder extension pedals (I'm average height and I have 2" extensions). Mooneys are known for low fuel burn and maintenance. You can get a beautiful example of a 201 (early 80s) for around 100K with garmin and KAP 150 or similar autopilot. How much you spend, initially, and on maintenence, will depend on how carefully you select your plane. Do you have any particular questions?
  17. Wanted to go to the Castle Museum's open cockpit day on Sunday, but it's a bit hot.
  18. On the other hand, I can't get my external gns 5870 to stay locked on. Anyone have any tips on a good location? I've tried all over the dash.
  19. I counted twenty-four (one flew away early). An awesome time, and I can't wait to return to Tahoe next year!
  20. I can't get my Zaon MRX to work in my Mooney. I think the steel cage might be disrupting the signal.
  21. All three. Put off joining EAA until I needed tickets for Oshkosh. I get the most use out of AOPA, but I like MAPA Log.
  22. I think we should be a secret society like the Masons.
  23. Methinks you need rudder extensions and a seat cushion like I have...
  24. Yes, on Sunday both WingX and my KLN94 both freaked out on me.
  25. Actually, I think it did happen on my panel box. It was showing the airport on the right, when it was actually on the left. Finally when I was right on top of it, it was correct. I've never had trouble with my KLN94 until yesterday.
