Avidyne IFD 540/440-Garmin 500 software bug
PTK replied to thinwing's topic in Avionics/Panel Discussion
A miscalibration by the installer and an advisory AI on an ipad does not ground the airplane. A GPS/NAV/Comm incompatible with the state of the art pfd/mfd has. But a reasonable person understands the difference. Care to try again?! -
Avidyne IFD 540/440-Garmin 500 software bug

They have not come up with a working solution because they are scratching their heads. Reverse engineering is a game keep up. Avidyne has to catch up before they can keep up. It's an uphill struggle for them. But even if they did catch up how are you going to trust them that they can keep up with the next G upgrade? This is not teething pains. This is effectively Avidyne crippling your panel and holding you hostage. Consider what this does to the value of your beautiful airplane! Having paid all this money you want to enhance its value, not detract from it. Sympathetic noises are cheap and covering the shop's expenses is the least they could do. Hopefully you can work it out to return their boxes and put in the GTNs. Avidyne deserves credit for trying but clearly is not ready or capable to go beyond replacing the GNSs in lower end panels. They should develop an intergrated solution of their own. -

Any progress with the Avidyne fiasco thinwing? -
32$/plane/32 years is 1$/plane/year. It does add up!

Air Rage and the worst stereotype of the Van's Airforce
PTK replied to Shadrach's topic in Miscellaneous Aviation Talk
Could it be that he didn't expect you to come back around for a pass since you just departed and were at 1000 ft AGL? -
I'm not sure there is a correlation between time of day and pitch servo. My pitch servo was similarly weird! It was not engaging until about 10 minutes into the first flight of the day and then it would work fine. Very weird. Diagnosed it with the help of Autopilots Central and under their recommendation sent it on to them. The solenoid was at fault and also they changed the tach motor. They said whenever spraying anti corrosion tx to be sure pitch servo is covered well with plastic. The pitch servo works very hard. A lot more than the others. So it's to be expected that it will need more attention.

I can only speak about the GTN750 because that's what I have and compare it to the 540. The 540 display is 4.75" x 3.5", 307000 pixels with a 5.7" diagonal. Only 0.2" larger diagonal than a GNS530. The GTN750 is 4.46" x 5.27" with a huge 6.9" diagonal, 425000 pixels. The 750 has 30% more pixels than 540. I imagine the 650 similarly has more pixels than the 440.

No they don't! But if you guys feel the KI300 is same as an Aspen who am I to argue! -
Peevee and Skates looks great. I have a couple questions: as someone asked earlier is tinting our windows allowed? and being in contact with our plexi windows and heat from the sun I wonder if it chemically reacts somehow that would negatively affect the plexi? Making it hazy? Not an issue in a car on glass windows but maybe an issue on plexi. You know how some plastics react with other plastics when in contact? We recently did our deck in pvc decking and one of the care instructions from the manufacturer is to avoid plastic or rubber mats on it because it can make it change color over time. I was just wondering.

Because it would be the only ADI that replaces the KI256. The latest info I have from my avionics shop is that they are still working on it. Sarasota has it Q3 of this year. And you are being combative! Relax take a chill pill! Don't be like Chris Aspen! -
I'd definitely go with Garmin. There's no comparison. When you are making this decision and committing this level of expenditure you are really investing in the company behind it. It is important for me that the company is invested in my needs as well. Garmin is synonymous with leader in avionics who is committed to general aviation needs. Also don't underestimate the fact that the gps/nav/comm is the foundation which supports your entire panel. You want this foundation to be strong and future looking. I went with the GTN 750 along with remote transponder and audio panel. You will love the GTN650!

One failure of anything would make me have an issue with trust! I don't need six! But I've had zero failures in 9 years. In less time than that my hangar mate has had two failures of his Aspen. One of them out of warranty during his trip back from Florida. -

In nine years of ownership I have had "zero" failures of my KI256 or entire KFC150 for that matter. Most recently I had Autopilots Central go over my KS177 pitch servo: 665$. In the KCS55A I had one sensor replaced in the HSI, 325$. Grand total in nine years ownership: 990$. -

What you said is this: "Actually, it's the contrary, so far it's looking like a G500 update has broken the connection between the IFD and G500." Doesn't that sound like you are attempting to cloud the issue and deflect blame? Then you said "...We have customers out there with the G500/600 who have a later than 6.21 software and the Release 10.2 with no issues" which is not correct. You certainly do sound like you are "playing the blame game!" agree? Perhaps inadvertently but you do sound like you are! -

Chris Aspen, I'm no more a G fanatic than you're an Aspen fanatic! But if I was one you bet I'd be a G fanatic! But I'm waiting to see if maybe your beloved Aspen will replace those old and stale boxes with something new. Waiting for something new from Garmin as well btw. -

"...You develop a product, test it against a configuration you believe is standard..." Sorry, I find this unacceptable. I really do. When you decide to reverse engineer software for a 20K$ box that drives the pfd/mfd you bear the responsibility to exhaust all testing leaving no stone unturned and make darn sure it works. Especially with the leading pfd/mfd. If you don't then you are embarrasing your company and jepardizing its reputation. Your other option is to develop an intergrated solution of your own. "Stuff happens" only when you're incompetent or you simply don't care because it's a small number of customers affected. The apple analogy is not very relevant for obvious reasons. -
Avidyne IFD 540/440-Garmin 500 software bug
PTK replied to thinwing's topic in Avionics/Panel Discussion
It's not the same thing and not what happened here. Incompatibilities happen. The issue here is that you have a company, Avidyne, who sold equipment and subsequently released untested software for it. If they knew they should've warned the customer. If they didn't know there's no excuse, they should've known. By failing to do this they misled their customers. Now after it came out they continue to perpetuate the problem by essentially telling their customer to wait...we are working on it! Some are ready to complain about Garmin with their intergrated solutions but you know what, they work. They may seem pricey but when you think about these headaches such as Avidyne is giving their customers, Garmin is a bargain! I'm no fan of monopolies either, if you want to call it that, but this is the landscape of avionics today. It may change but until it changes this is what we have. Also a lot of folks are complaining about BK and their unorthodox practices. How is that any different conceptually from what Avidyne did? The customer is the one who pays the big bucks and suffers in the end. Both are wrong. -

What they want him to do is sit by quietly be compassionate and very grateful because, after all, they're working so diligently to figure it out! Don't mind the trivial details that he has no use of his airplane indefinitely and they're holding on to his money! They will not send him an even used GNS530W because that would mean they accept inferiority. How would that look?! Avidyne surrendering to a used Garmin! I do have a suggestion for Avidyne. Pick one of the following options and do it fast: -take back your boxes and refund this gentleman's money plus avionics shop dianostic fees, or -buy him a brand new GTN and pay installation, or -pay him 1000$ per diem his airplane is grounded and he waits for you to figure it out. If he is agreeable. Sound reasonable and fair? -

How about a GTN 650? -
It actually is most practical imo. It's a matter of opinion and depends on your type of flying. I can tell you from experience, in IMC I can access my xponder and audio panel if needed with zero head movement. This is a function that's a lot more difficult to do if separate and impossible if it's all the way on the right. Same with my engine monitor.

I definitely agree on waiting to see what Oshkosh brings. Who knows maybe Aspen will roll out something new. Their boxes are old technology and overdue for a rejuvenation. Their survival depends on it. Hopefully they'll give Garmin some real competition. Also we'll see if Avidyne offers anything for their fans. Maybe a pfd/mfd that will be fully compatible with their IFD since they're having some issues with the G500. Also we'll see what BK will finally do with the KI300. I had heard a while ago that they had scrapped it. But last week my avionics shop told me they have info that it's not scrapped!

I'm a firm believer in utilizing panel real estate wisely. One of the smartest things Garmin did is give us remote audio and tx. So imo I'd go with the 750 with remote audio panel and tx. Dedicate panel real estate into the big beautiful 750 rather than than an audio panel and tx. You'll appreciate the large 750. It is the workhorse that drives your entire panel. Similarly this is why I retained the large JPI 800. All the info in my scan at the perfect footprint. I believe the engine monitor should be in your scan.
