Unfortunately no. The G5 does not provide attitude reference for third party autopilots; it only provides it for the GFC500. Hence the beauty in the simplicity of the KI300.
-
Actually I don't feel the urgency to take out my perfectly functioning KFC150! The only thing I would've liked to see is a simple replacement for the KI256. That is what I consider a weakness. The HSI G5 is nice but the real vulnerability is the vacuum dependance.
-
The KI300 looks to be the only option to eliminate vacuum. Any news on the KI300? A KI300 and a G5 HSI would be a nice pair.
-
Unfortunately we can't. Garmin is interested in selling the GFC500 for which the G5 provides attitude reference. I'm disappointed but I don't blame them. If they did support third party AP's with attitude reference it would be competing with the G500 and GAD43E.
-
It's a step in thd right direction but nowhere do I see the G5 providing attitude reference to the autopilot. Only the HSI G5 is mentioned.

Garmin just postponed their announcement till after Oshkosh. (...just kidding!!)

It's wondering in torment in a regretful monologue "...to be...or not to be...that is the question...life was so wonderful on the green...why did I have to wander off that beautiful field of green?!"

So you're saying there were no other options here but to pull the chute. I understand now. I respectfully disagree.
-
Please do elaborate because that's not at all clear...
-
I wasn't aware that chute use is over emphasized like that. But I do believe it because the chute is the way Cirrus certified it overcoming some not so great stall spin characteristics. So if this is the frame of mind of the generic Cirrus pilot what happens to basic planning and piloting? Recognizing and breaking the accident chain? They go out the window? Why did the engine quit? Fuel exhaustion? Why didn't he put it down? It's flat all around and he had to know that because he was there plenty of times before. Engines can and do quit. Did he have a plan? Or indiscriminately pulling the chute was the plan. Lapse in judgment and a lack of adherence to procedure and standards does not mix well with upholding the duties and the highest of responsibilities. He made a conscious decision to bring pax on board. Tragic.
-
Amazing anyone survived in that mangled mess. Sounds like he stopped flying the plane and hanged his fate and his pax's fate up to the parachute which he improperly deployed. Sad he made some wrong decisions. They cost him his life. I hope his pax survive this. Are Cirrus pilots preprogrammed when in trouble to depend on and pull the chute?

Mooney Clips Trees During Approach at Washington Island, WI
PTK replied to flight2000's topic in Miscellaneous Aviation Talk
Glad this one ended well for pilot and pax. -
When you find one be sure it comes with the GPS/HDG annunciator switch. That switch is 400+$ and you can't install the GDC-31 without it. I have a complete system wired for the KCS-55A. Wasn't planning on selling it but I may. It depends on what Garmin unveils on the 18th!

Planning a trip up to Niagara and would like some pireps on KIAG. Any info or suggestions greatly appreciated.
-
Sure it can! You have to distinguish between commercial and non-commercial GA.
-
Some are never happy it seems. They complain about the FAA and government bureaucracy and they complain about privatization doing away with the FAA in ATC. I have no problem with privatization of ATC as long as GA is fairly represented on the board of the proposed non-profit corporation.

I use it on the entire exterior and interior except on the leather. Frequent cleaning is key. I clean leading edges and plexi after every flight. "Cleans plexiglass, removes oil smudges and breaks down organic soils like bugs and fingerprints quickly and effortlessly. Leaves behind nothing but a clean shine!.. ...The Zep Commercial Foaming Glass Cleaner is an Ammonia Free formula. Use on glass, windows, mirrors, and Plexiglas. Should you have any other questions, please do not hesitate to contact us at 1-888-805-4357 and a representative will be happy to assist you. Sincerely, Zep Commercial Retail Technical Support." The CB in me refuses to pay 20$ for a 7oz. can of plexus! The ZEP is a 19 oz. can for $2.97 at the local Home Depot. I'd rather pay the 20$ for avgas!

What helped is it was a turf rw and it sounds like he firewalled the throttles before the props dug into the dirt. Can hear the tips contacting the ground. Curled the tips and amazing it climbed and made it to another airport. http://blog.metarreader.com/video-pilot-forgets-to-lower-landing-gear/

He went from landing at a 4200x100 foot runway where he picked up his pax, to a 2900x50 foot where he crashed. And it's clear by his voice in the recording he was very scared and intimidated. I think one lesson is if a shorter and narrower rw seems intimidating live to fly another day and do the pax and the airplane a huge favor by going to a longer runway. Especially after coming in 20 knots too fast. He could've impressed his lady friend by taking her to MIV. Breakfast is a lot better there anyway.

Here it is Paul. I hope it is better. I did Gami spread real slow taking ~3 min for each swing. Lean mag test was at >50° lop. Looks like cyl3 is the leanest. https://savvyanalysis.com/flight/1967721/b3d0d497-9b3a-4d78-8737-8a128f5def7b

Harsh indictment?! Not nearly as harsh as the blow to GA! It's the owner of the school saying this. Not a news reporter.
-
Interesting...
-
This is tragic and horrific for all involved. What's really amazing to me however is how lax the procedures as described are. The instructor left the airplane and the keys behind apparently trusting the student would follow him into the office. The school and the instructor will have a lot of questions to answer. How can it be so easy for someone to take an airplane and fly away? Especially post 911? This student apparently may have been mentally unstable. Girlfriend relationship gone bad kind of stuff. The school’s owner, Robert Dean, said Ukaere took off in the plane Saturday night without telling anyone. He decided to go fly, himself,” said Dean. “He basically took the aircraft away from here without any authorization.” The same plane had an emergency landing incident last December, said Ahmed Mohamed, a student pilot at Dean Flight Training. How can you allow this to happen Mr. Dean? Is there a good excuse? Who is responsible for the security of your aircraft? If not you then who? How secure are your aircraft if you didn't know it was missing for four days?! What does this say about GA if it can happen at a major and very busy GA airport like Miami Executive? The consequences of this kind of things cannot be good for any of us! Another major black eye for GA.

Excellent point Anthony. I'm running Tempest URHM38E since June 2014. I had resistance issues with the previous champions which I wasn't aware. As far as I could tell they were running fine. But decided to change them out on the recommendation of the A&P as they were getting old. There was some discussion around that time about resistance and the issues Champion was having. So we decided to check the resistance on several of them out of academic interest and curiosity really. I remember almost all of them were very high and a couple were way out of the ball park high! Here's Norm Howell's article... http://www.openclip.net/Benchmark/AOALog2011SpringTwoSparks.pdf

Paul, I sincerely thank you for taking the time to share your professional opinion and expertise. I greatly appreciate your suggestions. I will follow your guidance so I may obtain data that will lend itself to more meaningful interpretation. If I understand you correctly, and please correct me if I'm wrong, my plan is to first do the gami spread ~3x slower. I do have vernier controls and it's really easy. Then, and from a known LOP value, go right into the lop mag check. I will do this and post data plots. I was well in excess of 50° lop and suspected cyl3 is too lean. As you say because it's both plugs on cyl3 and being overly lean I'm not concerned. But will verify. Thank you again Paul.
