  1. The issue I have with Avblend is not if it works as advertised or not. I don’t know if it soaks into metal. I assume if its applied on a bear piece of metal it will adsorb into the surface imperfections, no doubt. And so will corn oil. The problem I have is this: my Lycoming has an 8 qt oil capacity which is 7571 ml. One Avblend bottle is 354 ml. This yields a 4.6% solution by volume in my engine. How can this trace amount possibly find its way through the oily surfaces to the metal underneath and soak in? (Hint: It doesn't!)
  2. I’m curious what fees are exorbitant. Here’s one datum point: I utilize Air Bound Aviation at KCDW a couple times a month. It is a full service red carpet FBO. Being the only FBO at the airport and in the NY Class B and very often in the POTUS TFR, one would think the charges would be prohibitive for us. But it’s not so! Officially their parking fee is 25$ and waived with a 20 gal fuel purchase. However, they do waive it with “some” fuel purchase. I say “some” because there have been times when I couln’t take all 20 gal and they still didn’t charge me extra. I think they are very fair.
  3. Yup! Liquids and air can and do leak. This should logically apply to no fuel in the tanks and no air in the tires!
  4. Aeroshell 15W50. Change q 25 - 35 hours or 4 months. Oil analysis at every oil change. NJ approx. annual temps, °F : Average high: 65 Average low: 45 Average temp: 55 Swings: 20 - 95.
  5. I would say that a jet produces zero hp. Or at least its meaningless to talk about hp in a jet. Thrust is what's important. Performance parameters are measured not by power but by thrust. That's also true in our pistons. Power is the product of thrust and velocity, TAS in our case: P=Thrust x Velocity. Without thrust we have no power. A jet sitting still at full thrust produces "zero" power. And because, unlike our pistons, thrust is constant its available power is directly proportional to its speed. In our pistons thrust varies with speed.
  6. I will post it as soon as I get it.
  7. M20J, IO-360-A3B6D. Changed oil and filter approx.10 hours ago. Serviced with 8 qts of Aeroshell 15W50 and Tempest oil filter. Oil pressure has been right in the middle of the green band. Last flight I noticed oil pressure was slightly lower than the middle of the green. Closer to bottom of the green. This corresponds to ~10 hours on the oil and a level of 7.5 qts on the dip stick. Is this consistent with what you guys with this engine are seeing? Are you seeing the oil pressure drop off slightly from the middle of the green at around 7.5 quarts? Does your oil level and pressure correlate similarly? Just curious.
  8. This is extremely depressing. We talk about mitigating risk and stacking the deck in our favor. This gentleman had tons of experience and was also an A&P. Presumably his airplane was in top mechanical shape. One would reasonably conclude that the deck was stacked in his favor. And this still happened. I hate the feeling that if it can happen to someone with his credentials certainly my airplane can kill me on any given flight. I don't know what else to say. Maybe it was health related like a heart attack or something. Prayers for their loved ones.
  9. I have a nice KMA24 if you can use it. Complete and tagged ready to install with tray and connector.
  10. Two possible reasons come to mind: Probably because the individual claims are not as great in terms of money paid out, or it is very difficult to prove it was in fact a t&g. But the underwriters only care about the claims. They will raise premiums for all of us or deny coverage. We should care because collectively the costs add up and it affects all of us in the pool. Eventually when they have to raise premiums to the point where they become uncompetitive they will drop out of the ga market. This also hurts us.
  11. Please show us your statistics that illustrate that electing to do t&g's "effectively" keeps insurance premiums from rising. ACTUAL numbers please.
  12. In the context of t&g's almost all, if not all, are reported to insurance. Insurance undewriters do perform credible statistical analyses and these are the statistics that count. I don't know about you but I certainly don't look favorably to my insurance premiums increasing because someone elected to do t&g's and bent an airplane or worse in the process!
  13. We do have verifiable statistics that our collective insurance premiums unfortunately increase each and every time a very expensive mishap happens. All because someone decided to save the few minutes it takes to properly land, exit the runway, taxi back and reconfigure by properly performing the checklists. Nothing anecdotal there! Instead of focusing on t&g's it is, imo, a lot more valuable and practice time is better spent performing full landings and aborted landings. Full landing from beginning to end. Proper approach speeds, reproducibly touch down on a predetermined touch down zone on the runway, exit and reconfigure. The argument often given that you may need a t&g due to insufficient rw length to stop is, again imo, poor planning and/or lack of practice the skills required to accomplish a full landing.
  14. RIP. Prayers for their loved ones. Wasn't there a Swiss Mooney that had flown over here and back a few years ago? I wonder if this was the one.
  15. Filter only. They wanted to charge 55$ for filter and 13$/qt for Aeroshell 15W50. Labor would be at their hourly rate. They did not stock Tempest which is what I use. They wanted to use Champion. Also that did not include clean and inspect the screen. If I wanted that it'd be extra! When I pressed them on the screen being part of the oil change they said that as per Lycoming that's done at annual! Which is incorrect.
  16. Clarence, it's not a good analogy because you can't buy an implant or a crown and go to your dentist to put it in your mouth. But to answer your question, for implants and components we only charge cost to the patient. For crowns we only charge lab fees. So patient pays my fee separate. We don't mark up "parts."
  17. Congratulations! Follow your POH on proper speeds and procedures.
  18. Aircraft Spruce sells it for 20$. They also have to ship it in, inspect it, warehouse it, and add a margin to be profitable. I do expect the shop to charge a reasonable mark up. Not a 275% mark up!
  19. I don't expect to be charged 55$ for a 20$ oil filter. Is there anyone who thinks that's acceptable?
  20. If the shop maintains an inventory I expect to be charged a little more for the parts. If they don't maintain an inventory and they order as needed, such as with the gear donuts, I don't expect to be charged for those parts over and above what I'd pay if I ordered them. But it can get crazy. I had a shop once who wanted to charge me 55$ for an oil filter! When I said that I have my own filter they said they couldn't use it because they are a repair station and have to be able to have a paper trail. I showed them the invoice from Spruce but it wasn't good enough. Of course I declined.
  21. I'm of the opinion that the vacuum pump can go when it feels like it. It could be brand new and go in 10 hours or it could go without a hitch for 500 or more hours. I think pumps are dependable. Failures are more often than not due to liquid contamination from washing down the engine or even oil contamination. Also mishandling while installing and improper installation. I carry a spare pump in the airplane just in case mine fails and I'm away somewhere.
  22. https://www.google.com/amp/philadelphia.cbslocal.com/2017/09/08/medford-helicopter-crash/amp/ May they rest in peace. Prayers for their families and loved ones.
  23. I use a filler spout with an on/off valve. Just rotate neck to off position, screw on to quart of oil, place in oil filler and rotate to on. Very convenient and spill free. And never any scamguard...just pure and unadulterated Aeroshell!
  24. Are some disposable paper funnels better quality than others? I used a paper funnel an FBO gave me a few months ago and it was flimsy. I had to watch and support it so it didn't collapse on itself spilling oil all over the engine compartment! Unless I find that better ones exist I just don't trust them.
  25. I wasn't aware Davtron has a fuel instrument.
