  1. I'll second or third the tethering. I have AT&T and get a bundled discount with Direct TV, plus my bride insists that we stay with AT&T since it's the only carrier that appears to work at her parents farm. In the spirit of thread hijacking...does anyone use a Microsoft Surface Pro tablet? I've got the Pro 3 and it's been good as a replacement laptop, but since it's a convertible tablet, I'd like to use it for flying. Currently, I just treat it like a computer and download what I need to fly.
  2. As a child of the South, I'll echo Hank's comments about St. Augustine, Savannah and Charleston. I don't know much about flying to St. Augustine, but it's the oldest city in the US. Savannah does only have one main airport, but there are some that are not too far. Look at KLHW, it's about 30-45 minute drive from what I recall and the gas is cheap enough to pay for the rental if you are there for a day or two. I'd use KLRO for Charleston. Again, much cheaper gas and not much difference for the drive downtown. Good luck with the trip.
  3. If I recall, Bill Turley was the chief mechanic's name. He is an unquestioned Comanche expert. However, you pay for that knowledge. I've been told that he is similarly capable on other airframes.
  4. Yea, I know about the over excited F-15. That was failure on multiple levels. Moving on to lighter topics....The other day I was talking to one of my Army SF buddies and he asked me if I understood the concept of SUCK? He said the Infantryman in the rain and mud says, "This Sucks!" The Ranger in a similar situation says, "This doesn't suck enough!" The Airman flying over the muck looks down and thinks, I bet it sucks down there. I spent a few years stomping in the mud until I decided I'd rather ride.
  5. Yea, I figured as much, but I just happened to read the story that morning. Relax Francis! Besides, I threw you a bone, so to speak, with the whirley-bird reference.
  6. I took the easy way out for the most part. I let someone else pay for it.
  7. I've got 4 states left to get to all 50 (NE, SD, NH, RI). I told my wife that I wanted to circumnavigate the US in a GA plane. She looked at me and walked away. I suspect I'll have to wait until I retire in a few years. I don't expect to rival 201er, but I'm willing to burn a few dead dinosaurs.
  8. There is an '84 on Barnstormers with a new engine, but not much other information. $79.5 I think.
  9. The strat boys are a whole different game... https://theaviationist.com/2016/05/25/usaf-b-52s-perform-show-of-force-in-jordan-during-35-hour-nonstop-mission-from-the-u-s/ My best is about 17 hours nonstop from Andrews to Yokota AB, JP. 2 air refuelings Finally 31 May is the 49th anniversary of the first nonstop Atlantic crossing by a helicopter, 9 air refuelings.
  10. I got tired of paying annual dues as well. I'm a Life Member now.
  11. I've seen this list before. A lot of it is generic for many aircraft, but has some military specific items. When I started my military leave from UPS a couple of years ago I don't remember anything like this. Just the aircraft logbook for squaks and a sense of humor there wasn't appreciated.
  12. What about a home equity loan? I think that would allow the interest to be tax deductible. Also, are you guys buying now seeing prices consistent with vRef?
  13. ALCON, I'm sure that some of you on this board are airline pilots and may be aware of what I'm posting. For the others, please read. Following some high-profile crashes due to fatigue, the FAA adopted new regulations for pilot rest. The new rules are similar to European guidance and incorporate circadian rhythm to the max extent possible. However, cargo pilots were excluded from the enhanced rest rules. Why? My short answer is that it's a money issue. It's cheaper to pay the families of a handful of pilots than a passenger airliner of 100-200 in the event of a crash. Regardless of your opinion, its a fact GA shares some of the same airspace and airports as cargo operators and you should at least be aware of the potential conflict. If you are so inclined, I'm attaching a link to the CAPA website so you can send a quick email to your congressman to establish a single level of safety. Thanks again for the consideration and support. http://www.capapilots.org/cargocarveout Don Thigpen
  14. Well said. Tailwinds...
  15. I think that Harry Kraemer in Gaithersburg is advertising that airplane. I haven't heard anything bad about him, but don't know him. Perhaps Seth can provide some input?
  16. There are two Missiles for sale on Controller.com. They are $114K & $129K. One is showing 1160 on the useful load. Love it!!
  17. It's a beautiful airplane. Continuing my theme of useful load obsession, shouldn't this one be eligible for 2900 pounds?
  18. At best. I'm in the need, want, mission trap. I don't need an airplane. I want a Glasair III and it fits my mission, flying alone most of the time. My precious bride thinks that a personal airplane should be almost as fast as a 737, but cost a little more than a E Class with luxury seating. Oh yea, an no weight limit. I think that's called a TBM. Sorry for the hijack Russell.
  19. My standard question, what's the useful load? Thanks.
  20. What about this one with Don Maxwell? http://www.trade-a-plane.com/search?category_level1=Single+Engine+Piston&make=MOONEY&model=M20J+201&listing_id=2096183&s-type=aircraft
  21. Yea, well, well... My degree is in History. I think that this means airplanes are expensive.
  22. I would file and fly IFR for the whole trip. Tell the briefer exactly what you plan on doing and they will help you file. 700' ain't much and you'd better know what is down there, power lines, cell phone towers are major hazzards. Are you carring charts with the latest updates for VFR flight? Is it summer in the south? Cropdusters get nose bleeds above 500'. Do Medevac flights frequent the area? For me, the risk - reward just isn't there. You've got an instrument rating for a reason, enjoy what you've worked for and learn in the process. Just my 2 cents.
  23. Congrats!
  24. Noted, I'm from Georgia and fly with a crew. dlthig
  25. I may get shot for this, but have you looked at a Bonanza?
