  1. On my last flight, EGT on cylinder #3 was feeling footloose apparently. It wandered up into the the normal range at times but mostly went up and down in a range 500-800 degrees below the normal. I tried a couple of mixture settings but it was still dancing to a different tune. Anyone experience this? Not really that concerned about it but would like to know if it looks like a new probe is needed or if something else is afoot. CHT remained normal.
  2. In one of Mike Busch's articles he mentions a guy who had a similar issue. Ran it out of oil just before landing. The A&P was adamant that he needed to "tear it down." Mike suggested a multi step detailed gound run, oil drain, analysis schedule. The guy followed this carefully. No excessive wear was observed in the oil analysis, and after some of thsis he did some short flights, still doing the anlysis regularly, but gradually increasing oil change back to normal. I don't think a knee jerk "tear it down" is necessary.
  3. On my 172 the brake is always a little mushy after removing a tire. The piston gets pushed in a little when maneuvering the wheel off of the spindle. After several good braking applications, the piston finds it's happy place kissing the rotor and it all goes back to normal.
  4. Thanks for the input, I much appreciate you sharing your expertise.
  5. My airplane has a century 21 autopilot. I've used it several times but sometimes it will only command a left turn no matter what source or heading is selected. Am I missing something or is the old circuitry waving goodbye to me on the way to complete failure? Anyone else experience this failure mode? Sent from my SM-A326U1 using Tapatalk
  6. I also would keep motoring on if vital statistics are good. Especially considering the current backlog of everything maintenance related in aviation.
  7. That's a lot of hours and experience! Instead of raising your premiums they ought to give you a "safe flyer" discount!
  8. O wow, not sure how I missed the end of the video
  9. Awesome update! Can't wait to see it flying again.
  10. IMO, 10 months isn't going to be that serious. Probably if you did this every year for the next 5 it would. I don't know as much about the Lycoming engine, but I know of a Cessna 172 with a Continental in it that was flown infrequently from new (1961) all the way to TBO in 1996. It sat for many months at a time during that period. You don't seem to hear those stories, you only hear the horror stories. The engine also was only equipped with an oil screen (horrors) but that didn't seem to shorten it's life any either.
  11. Not sure how I started out reading a thread about Mooney's financial woes and ended up voting in a poll about my body size.
  12. If there are no dents or other deformities, I wouldn't personally be very concerned.
  13. FWIW, Electronics International shipped my CGR-30P upgrade within about 3 weeks of ordering.
  14. So in an M20J what is your initial climb out speed and why? I'm talking the first 100 to 200 feet. Sent from my SM-A326U1 using Tapatalk
  15. I admire your dedication. Because of that I'm sure your going to have good results. Keep us posted. You'll have it more to your liking and definitely have more satisfaction when you're done.
  16. Wow, your experience would probably give me a permanent bad twitch or something.
  17. I had a skybeacon installed on an older Cessna that didn't have strobes, so I'm not sure if this is normal or not. On my J model, the unmodified wingtip has normal strobe light. On the wingtip with the skybeacon, I have a flashing white light, but not of the intensity of a strobe. Is that how these things are supposed to work?
  18. So, this got me thinking. Anyone on here have an engine out experience? It looks like the pilot was just a few hundred feet short of the runway. Assuming this was a full engine failure, I'm guessing the "engine out" practice we've all had in training would have got him to the runway. But the difference in actual performance between a full failure and an engine at idle is something we don't often experience.
  19. Which cylinder on IO-360 is hotter at cruise settings? And what's the hottest number you've seen?
  20. I think I'd at the least inform the mechanic what was done wrong and how much you paid to have it rectified. I wouldn't expect money back, but he ought to know what it cost you.
  21. Sure, 36' can be handled. Picture is deceiving, the airplane is not on the runway surface yet.
  22. In my experience the CGR-30p is a great product and the tech support from EI is excellent. Sent from my SM-A326U1 using Tapatalk
  23. I get all discombobulated when I have to carry a conversation over the radio, so until I sorta get my radio voice and mentality going, anything with ATC is more stressful. But I speak as a pilot who up until recently lived in one of the last class G to 18000 ft areas of the nation.
  24. I used some of those connectors recently, and it didn't seem to me like there would be any need for thread locker.
