  1. I got some quotes for insurance in anticipation of buying a Mooney. I have just under 500 total time, an IR, and 13 hrs complex, all in a Commanche. The insurance company is asking for 10 hrs dual instruction before solo. Does this sound about like your experience? Sent from my SM-A326U1 using Tapatalk
  2. Sounds like the switch is not grounding out the mag as appropriate in L or R but is in both. Sent from my SM-A326U1 using Tapatalk
  3. I know next to nothing about autopilots yet, but I'm learning. Is there any more modern upgrades to this autopilot, or is a whole new system the only option? Sent from my SM-A326U1 using Tapatalk
  4. Hopefully about 45 Sent from my SM-A326U1 using Tapatalk
  5. I have the opportunity to upgrade the KT76A to a KT76C. Since I'm not planning to do any better upgrades (like mode-s or ads-b) to the transponder, is this a worthwhile upgrade if it can be done for $500? I know it's just a slide in replacement, so there's no installation cost, but I'm not sure if the C is a more reliable or not. I do like the input better, but a small point.
  6. The transponder is an old KT-76A. There is no WAAS source at this point. I hesitate to put all my money into one box, otherwise I might go with the GNX 375. But if it fails I lose gps navigation, transponder, and ads-b out all in one fell swoop. I would prefer to go a little more piecemeal, which is why I lean toward Uavionix. This would also allow me to upgrade some things more slowly, spread out the cashflow, AND give me some time to develop a better idea of what my long term needs are.
  7. So the Mooney I'm planning to buy needs ads-b. I'd also like to update it with a GPS 175. I am familiar with the uavionix sky beacon which is super easy and quick to install. I understand the GDL 88 interfaces with the GPS 175. I'm considering whether to go with the quick and easy uavionix ads-b out, or the more complicated GDL 88 installation that will interface nicely with the GPS 175 and provide ads-b in, out, and weather. Anyone with experience on how well the GDL 88 works and complexity of install? Sent from my SM-A326U1 using Tapatalk
  8. Same thing exactly happened to me. I thought for a moment something serious had gone wrong. Sent from my SM-A326U1 using Tapatalk
  9. Watch out for a sticking valve. Low EGT could be a valve stuck partially open.If so it needs to be dealt with promptly. Sent from my SM-A326U1 using Tapatalk
  10. I'm a believer in less maintenance and maximum reliability and therefore want to avoid turbochargers and the like. It won't be like flying the mountains of Colorado. Almost all of the flying will be done in mountains under the 10k foot mark. Sent from my SM-A326U1 using Tapatalk
  11. The mission is twice a month 200nm trips for business, with occasional multi state trips for pleasure. I've got 450 hours, almost exclusively in C172, with a little C182 and Commanche time. I'll be flying in the mountains of Idaho, Washington, and Montana. Realistically I probably won't keep the airplane past 10 years Sent from my SM-A326U1 using Tapatalk
  12. I guess my question boils down to: is the F model basically an early J model that's 10kts slower? Sent from my SM-A326U1 using Tapatalk
  13. The panel is such that I would be satisfied with it as is for 5 years at least. There are no other major upgrades. A little research says the engine overhaul is actually cheaper on the earlier engine, but I question that. In most of the Js I'm seeing there would be a 10 to 15k higher price, plus I would not be happy without some panel upgrades that would quickly add another 15 probably. The F would be 10 knots slower most likely. Sent from my SM-A326U1 using Tapatalk
  14. I know the J has a speed advantage. Does the F cowling cause any cooling issues I should consider? Sent from my SM-A326U1 using Tapatalk
  15. I've been "shopping" for a mooney for about 2 months now. I had decided a J model, but have come across a couple late model F's. What would be your preference all other things being more or less equal; a late model F with a nice IFR gps panel, or $10 to $15k more for a 1979 or 1980 J model that needs some panel updating to get IFR gps capability?
