Discharge from breather hose
Mufflerbearing replied to turbobullet's topic in Modern Mooney Discussion
Well, after seeing the milkshake on the oil cap and wiping it clean, then observing the oil cap being clean from milkshake after keeping the oil cap open, time and time again, leads me to believe that this works. -
Discharge from breather hose
Mufflerbearing replied to turbobullet's topic in Modern Mooney Discussion
This! I find that running all winter long, that there is condensation at the breather and at the oil cap. The oil looks great as the flights I take are long distance which removes the water, but when everything is hot and then cools, it pulls in all of this moisture. I do this as well and it makes a ton of difference. -
FIKI Flight In Known Icing. While working on my IFR, I asked specifically about icing and icing issues of my DPE. For a definition of known icing, a pilot must know there is icing. This is by either experiencing it or by a pirep. Other than that, it is speculative or forecast, hence pilots sometimes get themselves into potential problematic situations. There is a difference between being smart and being legal. Having FIKI on my plane was a must on my list of must haves when I was looking to purchase a plane. I have used it and love having it. Having safety equipment is important but making sure that safety equipment is working properly is equally important.

I also bought one from airplane-covers and it has held up very well and I think it was really well thought out. There is extra material behind the clips to protect the plane and it fits snugly. It doesn't hurt that the color I chose is a very close match to the color of the plane.

Is a Mooney right for my mission? If so, which one?
Mufflerbearing replied to Pogamassing's topic in General Mooney Talk
Well, I have the perfect plane for his mission. It's an Screaming Eagle so it has the UL, Fiki, incredible interior, descent paint and awesome electronics. Since it took me so long to find this unicorn plane, knowing that it will take anyone tons of time to find such a plane, I'll be kind and offer mine up for sale. $500,000 to the first one with the cash. -
Ok, what airplane WOULD you trade your Mooney for?
Mufflerbearing replied to 201er's topic in General Mooney Talk
Nope, the Screaming Eagle has everything that I could ever want. -
Interesting that this would come up. This last week, I flew my wife down to Scottsdale AZ to be at the Barrett-Jackson auto auction. In the middle of the grounds was a Cirrus under a large tent. The first time I went to talk to the salesmen there, all 4 of them, I asked some simple questions. What is the speed and burn rate? They gave 165kts at 18.5 gpm. I was also told that burning LOP was not recommended by the manufacturer which I had never heard. I then asked, what is the UL? The visual response on their faces represented confusion as if I was speaking a different language. With some more questions, it became very clear that these guys take orders but do not fly nor really know their product. I came back the next day in the morning to which I met Chuck. He is a pilot and well versed in these planes and was very personable. This particular plane goes all over the place but has no engine and the wings are just pinned to the fuselage. This plane will never fly, but is good for show. As we left him, I turned to my wife and said, he reminded me of Chuck Finley as we are watching Burn Notice. She said that I just beat her to that comment. My point is that in this world, there are salesmen and order takers. For any company to succeed in business, salesmen are needed. After reading a thread on here about how Mooney suffered at shows with lack of interest in talking to customers, this was obviously a problem. Hopefully if they start building planes again, the salesmen would be diehard mooniacs and not someone that decided to sell planes because selling womens shoes became too difficult. On another note, I talked with a Cirrus owner about his plane. I hadn't seen it for many months and thought that maybe he had sold it. His 10 year chute repack was overdue and the plane became unairworthy. It has been sitting in Colorado waiting for a back ordered chute for 3 months and still not sure when they can get one in. So much for buying a newer plane from a company still in business and expecting good service or parts.

Any guidance on fasting while flying?
Mufflerbearing replied to RobertGary1's topic in General Mooney Talk
This has been a very interesting read. I was diagnosed as hypoglycemic when I was 21. Fasting is a real challenge. I do become another person. Like that green angry guy in the Marvel world, then I pass out. When my wife sees this other green guy show it's ugly head, she feeds me. This really makes fasting difficult though it is part of our religious beliefs. I am sure that there are more educated here on this issue, and I am looking forward for more information from those more wise than I. In the mean time, fasting doesn't seem to be an option for me. -
Potential new mooney buyer/owner with model questions...
Mufflerbearing replied to Subternal's topic in General Mooney Talk
I was in your position and had been looking for a Mooney while working on my PPL. Someone wrecked the plane I was learning in so when I found my perfect plane, I didn't hesitate too much and bought it. I finished my PPL training and took the test in my Screaming Eagle and have not looked back. I also jumped right in and got my IFR which took another month to complete. So far, owning the plane almost 2 years and 300 hours, it has been the best decision I have made. The Screaming Eagle is an Eagle that has had the STC of the O2 or O3 depending on which STC was done a the time of installation. It also has generally better UL because it was a stripper model originally and sold for less money, but most have been upgraded with better avionics and such. Enjoy the hunt! When you know what your Unicorn airplane is, when you find one, jump on it. -
I love my Zulu 3's. They are comfortable but there was this one time, flying in a new to me area in CA, talking to ATC when out of no where, everything went super loud. After a quick look at my engine gauges and engine monitor seeing what part of the engine was destroyed, finding nothing wrong, then realized that the batteries of my ANR head set died! I was relieved I didn't have engine trouble, but the remainder of the trip was uncomfortable. I am looking at possibly a set of QT's.

I had a 2700% increase this year! I actually was naked and just bought full coverage from Parker. Working with Parker is awesome and I hope he continues being a successful insurance broker. Our local flight school wrecked (bent) 5 planes this last year, one more than once and one totaled. Luckily no one was hurt. This didn't include a student stabbing the brakes hard on a tail dragger and having the prop hit the asphalt requiring a new engine. The sad part is the owner mentioned that he made most of his money in 2020 in insurance payments. He sold the flight school and has moved on, largely in part I believe, because he couldn't get a renewal.

There is an old saying "I'm too poor to buy cheap things". Maybe it was just price creep, but when I was looking at a plane, I really wanted to buy my first/last plane. I can't imagine a plane I would want more than my Screaming Eagle with FIKI and a ton of electronics. There is also another saying, "if you don't look back at your car when you walk away, you bought the wrong one". I think this also applies to airplanes and yes, I always look back when I walk away. One plane that I would purchase for no other reason than play, would be a 1941 Boeing Stearman. I think that it would be a really capable back country plane to have.

Just committed to this lil number (N8201Q)

Will an Ovation fit my mission?

Will an Ovation fit my mission?
Mufflerbearing replied to MooneyTime's topic in Modern Mooney Discussion
I can only speak to the NA version. I love my Screaming Eagle. As Amelia said above, simple to fly. The cost of a rebuild is what, half? I fly over the mountains all of the time. Cascades, Utah, Montana, never is an issue. The benefit of the Screaming Eagle is power of the O's, same body, better UL. I would seriously consider getting one with FIKI. This was a "must haves" when I was looking for my plane. Yes, I have used it and grateful I have it. -
How Many Hours PIC to Transition into a Mooney (Poll)?
Mufflerbearing replied to 201er's topic in General Mooney Talk
I am not a CFI nor do I play one on TV. I am a high performance driving instructor. A question like this is truly difficult to answer as everyone is different. We have some students that pick up on something quickly. They understand looking ahead as an example, because of their history with downhill skiing and such. Others revert to looking just past the hood as they did when they were first learning how do drive. There are the more extreme that every lap around the track is a new experience and we explain that maybe a different hobby is in their future. I don't expect these people are capable of flying anything much less than a kite. So, there is a risk tolerance that a pilot has personally where they feel they can explore the bounds of other planes other than the one they trained in. I have a high risk tolerance and because of a flight school challenge, I bought my plane before my PPL and took my PPL test in it. That was amazing. I don't think my DPE had ever been in a plane faster than his float planes or a 172. I appreciate what Don said about teaching without having to overcome prior bad habits. That is a thing and getting in proper training early is a good thing. This one point is why I don't teach my kids how to golf. I would rather have them start off right. -
If you are into cars at all, this is a really fun circus to watch and be a part of. Friday and Saturday are always stupid money and money goes up when the cameras go on. Sundays there are good cars but the money goes home Saturday night. I would imagine that the fun factor is like Oshkosh for pilots. I have never been, yet... Hopefully this summer?

It's a great car show! Then if there is something that I like and the price is right, then I buy it. My next unicorn car is a '65/'66 Shelby GT350. I just purchased a car that I am picking up in 2 weeks. It's in customs jail and has served half of it's sentence. The new car is a 997.2 GT3RS in Aqua Blue with the white gold. Don't have much of an itch for another new one right now, but you never know!

All excellent points! We are heading down to Scottsdale AZ for the Barrett-Jackson auction which will be the longest small plane flight my wife has taken. We have flown several times to Salinas CA and she enjoyed that. Scottsdale is just 5.5 hours but GA will be a bit more of an adventure.
-
Is there a point, or what is the point where you would fly commercial than fly your own plane? I live in Idaho, but have children that are located as far away as Georgia. I have found that even at this distance, time wise, I can beat a commercial flight all things considered. My wife has reservations flying that far ourselves other than taking a commercial flight. What do you do?
-
I understand that there is an intake efficiency with WOT. The prior owner of my plane said leave the throttle to the wall and use mixture and prop for performance/efficiencies. I also understand, in cruise, that 2300 rpm is a better place for the engine to run as the magnetos are a set advance.
-
If someone looked at my flight time and distance this last year, I would show as a complete genius and someone to listen to. However, I assure you that this is probably not true. Yes, I flew a lot. But I still consider myself a newbie with a ton to learn.
-
Welcome! Find out specifically what you will be looking for so when you see the unicorn, you can spot it and jump on it. There is a recently bellied C at CDA... It already has a 1 piece belly from a prior gear up landing. Poor plane, just can't seem to find it's landing gear. Anyhow, I understand it will be rebuilt again and sold... Not sure what your time frame is.

Wing mounted landing and taxi light installation
Mufflerbearing replied to PT20J's topic in Modern Mooney Discussion
After installing LED landing lights in, I just leave them in all the time. They draw no power and I like being seen. After thinking about it, I left the taxi light in as halogen to help create heat for anti icing. Seems the FIKI doesn't extend over the lens so having something in there to create a little heat is a good idea. -
Congrats! The O's are amazing planes! Enjoy your plane and this amazing community. Being a part of this community, sharing your experiences good and bad, is how to give back.
