  1. At 2.6 lbs for processor and antenna, it is pretty light. On the down side the cost is a bit more than 2 amu's/lb.
  2. The location of that spot seems strange. Any idea what caused such "localized" corrosion? Why that spot? Why on the leg of the angle that was oriented vertically?
  3. Lately I've been researching the differences between Stormscopes and Strike Finders. Stormscopes all seem to come in at about 9-10 lbs including display, antenna and processing unit. Strike finders weigh only under 2 pounds total (incl. antenna). Given that their performance is similar (decent in azimuth, not great in range), and one shouldn't use them to slalom through convection, I'm thinking about "upgrading" to a Strike Finder.
  4. Our '83J has a little cap above the indicator with four ridges arranged in a "X" that looks like it might be removable. Is that the same as your '94?
  5. During a recent evening flight I noticed that our J has no trim/flap indicator light. The wiring diagram for this S/N shows one. Is it internal to the indicator?
  6. Stumbled upon this article on the interwebs this evening. Thought I would share it. Who wants one? https://sanangelolive.com/news/business/2023-05-01/predator-flies-san-angelo
  7. Recently bought replacement wingtop sight fuel level indicators. I've read that they are held in their socket by silicone. How does one go about removing them without damaging the socket? Is there a snap ring around the top? Thx. -Fred
  8. I'd suggest that you turn it into an "EASY" button.
  9. Possibly the first private company to make a crater on the moon?
  10. Good luck. Discipline is hard when you have Mooney Fever!
  11. Got the plane back from the shop with JPI EDM900 installed. Went over last Saturday for a test flight and to help calibrate fuel senders. Before startup everything seemed to be working. All EGT and CHT's were about 70F. On first test flight the EGT probes on cyl 2 & 4 both read about 600 degrees F less than cyls 1 & 3! Weirdness. When I tested the lean find function, they responded normally when displayed in normalized view. Landed and they put two of the old EGT probes on those two cylinders and the problem disappeared! What are the odds of 2/4 new EGT probes being "bad"? I guess >0. They installed the new JPI shunt on the firewall in the engine compartment and left the original shunt in place. In fact they never saw the original shunt. It's in there somewhere in the vicinity of the avionics cooling fan, way in the back. Removing it would require a lot of disassembly. Everything works!
  12. Ok, here are photos showing a just completed improvement of the panel in our new-to-us M20J. She came with fogged-up ASI and altimeter, TC with noisy bearings and a non-primary engine monitor, which left legacy gauges galore. We wanted to move the KX-155 below the Avidyne GPS, but the entire panel seems to have been riveted together on a bench, then put into the airplane. Impossible to move racks around without taking the whole thing out. The final photo shows overhauled ASI, Altimeter, non-TSO vacuum AI replaced, primary (JPI EDM-900) engine monitor installed, legacy engine gauges and ADF removed, USB power port and uAvionix AV-20-S timer/backup AI added.
  13. Thanks for leading me through that process Craig. That will achieve what I want to do. Non-controversial and could be used to start a FAQ!
  14. All these other ideas would work, but none are as convenient as being able to save titles and links to useful threads for future reference in MS. If you follow a thread that nobody has posted to for years, how do you know you are following it? Is there some way in user's personal home to see a list of threads they are following?
  15. Ok. Thanks. It would be kewl if we could add this feature. It's so similar to the "follow" option, that maybe it's not too hard.
  16. Thanks for your reply. As I understand what you wrote, the feature set we see is what we have, and configuring new features is not an option without an expensive development contract. If so, that's just a shame. I know many other sites use this software. I'm really interested in making MS better for all, especially those of us who learn from the considerable experience that seems to live online here. Imagine chat-gpt, except with real-live Mooney experts, who often disagree with each other! Good to get feedback from multiple perspectives! -Fred
  17. Ok, here's something that ought to be doable. I've been a MS member since 2017 and recently transitioned from owning/managing a C to a J. Of course I've got questions about stuff. This is a common situation. MS is a tremendous resource with a long history. It amazes me how often times google search turns up deep, relevant, technical discussions on MS- much more often than BT or POA, etc. When something big comes up with my airplane, instead of creating a thread to ask a question, I'll first search MS with goduckgo using "question site:mooneyspace.com", where question here in quotes are strings related to my question. For instance, this morning I typed this into google search: "troubleshooting kfc-150 trim error site:mooneyspace.com" The first hit was an excellent thread from 2015 that I think might answer my question! I would love to tag this as a favorite so I don't have to redo my search next time I want to refer to it. "Follow" doesnt' cut it. It only tells you when somebody posts to that thread. We need an ability to tag threads as "favorites", and have those favorites show up on our personal page. That will make them easy to locate in the future. There could be an option to let others see your favorites, or keep them private, just like we can presently do with follow. This seems like a great compromise other than having a faq. It would allow a member to save reference to a thread that has useful information. Howbout it?
  18. It seems from reading this thread that step one in upgrading a panel in a J is to just go ahead and take the entire panel and radio stack out.
  19. Do round rivet heads count as vortex generators?
  20. My C had two: one in the passenger side NACA duct, and a second on the first inboard inspection panel outboard on the pilot's side. The one in the NACA duct read a few degrees warmer than the one under the wing.. My J has it on the second inspection panel outboard on the pilot's side.
  21. Here's an interesting set of curves for the 64-412 airfoil that is used outboard on the M20 wing. From Kindred Grey (2021). "NACA 64_1-412 Airfoil Data." CC BY 4.0. Adapted from NACA. Public domain. https://archive.org/details/64-412 The last figure showing drag coefficient Cd vs alpha clearly shows the magic "drag bucket", where Cd is low for section lift coeff. between about 0.2 and 0.6. For our Mooney's with a clean wing flying with a Re>3.0E+06 (easy), that's the sweet spot. These Cl values correspond to level flight between 180 and 110 knots, respectively, at angle of attack of approx. 0 and 3.5 degrees! Anybody see curves like this for the inboard 63-215?
  22. Carson's speed- or "how to waste fuel optimally". I did some test flights in my C last year just to explore the concept. It's just too slow down low. Who want's to cruise at 16.5" MP (not WOT) and 2350 rpm at 10k? Yeah, you get over 6:30 endurance and 950 statute mile range, but biological limitations make it infeasible for me at least!
  23. This is an interesting thread from the past (12 years ago). Bringing it up for others to experience.
