  1. Well, I think that’s a bit off topic but the relevant part is this… What I took from the Adsb component, is that it makes “you” more aware of others that may not see you, not that this was was the most effective way to reduce airplane accidents today, that is an entirely different discussion. But you are talking about suggesting something that would make a pilot safer that is within their control. Traffic that you cannot see with your eyes is an element that is completely out of the safest pilot in the worlds control. if you cannot visually see a threat, and you are doing everything correct, but Adsb allows you to see what you otherwise couldn’t, that is the benefit I was referring to. if you want to to talk about immediate impact to safety we should look at fuel exhaustion and inadvertent flight into IMC, these seem to be the biggest culprits. we can agree to disagree, but no one will ever convince me that mandatory radios, talking and Adsb wouldn’t make things safer.
  2. This is one of the frustrations I have with the FAA. There is absolutely no reason we should not be able to have completely automated variable timing systems on our engines. The technology has been around for decades. I am not advocating for the FAA to be abolished, I’m just suggesting that it’s long overdue to enter at least the 20th century. The approval process for things like ignition systems and autopilots, and most improvements to be honest, is stupid, and could be streamlined very easily without compromising any safety. It should be relatively simple to design a clean sheet new engine, but the rules are so onerous and obtuse that it turns a $30k engine into a $120k engine, and takes 20 years to be approved instead of two.
  3. I’m a little confused as well, and believe that some personal conflicts may have distorted the issue a bit. The reality is that even with excellent vision and awareness, you are incapable of seeing a large portion of the visual field. It’s just impossible to see areas behind, over, under and at some point on the side. ADSB can see it all directions. When I started flying, none of the planes, at that point, had traffic. Heck the flight school planes didn’t even have functional gps or AP’s, much less traffic. My first Mooney did not have ADSB, and I flew it for almost a year before upgrading to a 345. I was going to get active traffic as well but my avionics guy said get ADSB in/out first and see if you still want active traffic. I listened to him and when I picked up my plane to fly home I was shocked, and I mean SHOCKED at the volume of traffic around me that I could not see! There simply is no good reason to suggest this isn’t a benefit, helpful or that it provides additional safety. I will never own a plane without traffic of some kind. While the risk may be statistically low, it’s one you can easily mitigate with traffic, and I see no reason not to have in my aircraft. I know some of you guys prefer not to spend the money, but call it what it is, because it does enhance safety and awareness, with or without proper training… Full disclosure, I would support the FAA mandating radios, and radio use in all planes, and at all airfields . There is no valid reason not have a radio in todays day and age. Even a good portable one is less than $500.
  4. Everyone had their own method for hot starts, mine is high boost pump for 20 seconds, 3/4 throttle, and full lean, slowly advance the mixture till it pops and be ready to hit the low boost pump if it stutters. I have had really good success with this, and seldom have to work the starter too hard. The other thing I now, when I know I have a quick turn is to park into the wind, and open the oil filler door. you’d be amazed at how quickly the engine cools down
  5. It did not occur during an update, but I am due one. that’s easy enough to check, I should be so lucky…
  6. Yeah, even the main display is only a flat of 2500. If it’s an LRU that would be the easiest fix, I suspect it isn’t that given the logbook history. The challenge if no one locally wants to help, I’m not sure how to get it somewhere else. it’s going to take someone patient and thorough, not something very common in thr modern world… speaking of that and for the sake of levity, I saw this today and laughed.
  7. I’ve done that, and there is some history of this in the logs, and it’s even been replaced once.
  8. So I have this problem where intermittently I lose most of my engine monitoring items. The avionics shop says it’s an AP issue and the AP says I need to bring to an avionics shop. Has anyone experienced this before? I have pulled the plugs and reseated all of them with no improvement
  9. There doesn’t appear to be a lot of options between the sidewinder type tug and a real expensive one. The gasoline ones are the only other option. Best thing to do is to just troll the airport bulletin board, and find someone who is getting out of aviation. I managed to get a 40k tug for my Aerostar for 2k. the sidewinder that uses friction on the front wheel doesn’t work great, but it does the job, I don’t think it would have any effect on the longevity of the tire.
  10. In addition to all the specifics mentioned, there is an element of “feel” that I think is a bigger component that any other airplane that I’ve flown. I don’t know exactly when the “feel” came to me, but when it did my landings changed dramatically. Every other plane I have flown was very easy to get to a point where I could make good landings, the Mooney took me a while. (I’m sure part of this was because I was a very green pilot when I got my ovation with about 12 hours total time). After flying with some very experienced pilots and letting them try to land the Mooney, was evidence of its differences. No other plane I’ve flown has as much problem slowing down as the Mooney does… As I’m sure most other of these seasoned guys can tell you, once you get the “feel”, you can make mediocre approaches into smooth landings, and bad approaches acceptable. I also avoided full flaps for a while, ground effect can really mess with you with full flaps, but again, once you get the feel it gets much better.
  11. ^^^^^ THIS!!!^^^^^ I had a crop duster take off in the opposite direction I was landing one time. He took off with a tail wind, when I was less than 1/4 mile from the threshold. I made all the calls for the pattern. If he didn’t have the power he had, we would have crashed, he did a 90deg turn under 100’ elevation. I was livid, and called the FAA to discuss. They called the other pilot and he corroborated my story 100%. Then the FAA called me back and said no action was necessary because no one did anything wrong. That made me even angrier and I told him as much. I said I saw the guys eyes on takeoff and someone did something wrong! He said since it’s uncontrolled and he isn’t required to have a radio there as nothing they could do. I believe a radio should be mandatory for all aircraft, and Adsb in and out would never be a bad thing.
  12. Saying that 85 other countries have even dumber rules than our FAA doesn’t really make them good, it just means they may suck a little less. Regulation is obviously a necessary evil, and I don’t object to regulations, just the nonsensical foolish ones. The FAA is spending tens, maybe hundreds of millions of dollars, trying to thwart warbirds from being enjoyed, and even when they discovered the horrific unintended consequences of their folly, they doubled down instead of adjusting. Meanwhile, they ignore basic things that could actually make aviation safer. They are a gigantic, bloated, feckless bureaucracy that is so convoluted and filled with dead weight employees it’s arguable that it does more good than harm. Under the FAR concerning experimental, you could technically take that plane apart to the point it satisfies the percentage of building regulation, modify and restore however you want, and then register it as experimental. The point is if that is possible, why not allow conversions of planes that have no support? I seriously doubt most people with the intelligence and funds to build an airplane are trying to avoid maintenance, but who wants to pay more for something just because? Look at the cost of an experimental avionics vs certified. There is NO difference whatsoever in how those units are made, nor how they function, they are identical, yet one is an order of magnitude more $$$. The vast majority of the rules appear to do little for efficacy, safety or economy, most seem to be just for the sake of a rule, as useless and arbitrary as it may be… perhaps some of them made sense 50 years ago but many of them are obsolete now There are many simple rules that would make aviation safer overnight, such as requiring all planes to have a radio. This is not a hardship today, but would make uncontrolled fields a lot safer. They could also mandate Adsb in and out for every plane so traffic was available. The challenge is that the FAA uses “safety” as a shield for all of their idiocy, just like every other bureaucracy, they get caught in the petty power struggle rather than efficacy, and they have no competition, and no ability to self regulate or evaluate. All they do is pile new dumb rules on top of old dumb rules… The FAA need a genuine overhaul for, top to bottom.
  13. It’s called groome. they run a limited service bus/shuttle. You book online and catch the shuttle at ATL.
  14. I saw a highly modified v tail bonanza all over beechtalk a few months/years ago that was experimental. Maybe he had to comply with all of those limitations? the guy was selling and posted a video about the plane and didn’t elude to all those restrictions. if no parts are made, no one will rebuild the engine, it’s kind of orphaned. seems like a perfect example of a plane that could be converted. the FAA really does deserve all the scorn and ridicule. the Feckless Aviation Agrivation….

  16. Could something like this be taken experimental?
  17. Was flying with an instructor today that asked me to let him land it. He really struggled once in ground effect. the need to fly the plane all the way to the ground is contrary to trainers. keeping that attitude and letting it settle become second nature with good habits. When we went around and I greased the landing with a gusting 18knt crosswind, he said he didn’t realize how import my instructions were. I would like to try one with someone else’s plane, but I don’t feel like I need it.
  18. Not exactly sure what you are referencing, but it it about the co ownership plan that Mooney was trying to stimulate I don’t think that ever went anywhere.
  19. Living within one’s means is always a good idea, regardless of where the limit hits the ceiling. All that matters is that you love your plane. They are large discretionary purchases that require constant attention and money, as well as currency and proficiency requirements. If you don’t love them, you will resent each time it makes a demand. If you love them you do it happily, either way isn’t that what we work for? I can’t buy a jet, not even close, but I remember the time when I couldn’t own a Mooney either….
  20. I avoid that airport at all costs. I landed there once to look at an e model with a friend. when I was taking off I got a good look at was around me, and if you lose an engine on take off it would be a miracle to survive. there is NO place to put it down that isn’t a building. this guy didn’t crash on takeoff, I can promise you that.
  21. Focusing on what makes the money, hard to blame them, but I would have paid a premium for it. I could do it, but doing it requires learning a lot the hard way. id prefer to spend the time flying. I am also looking for a new referral and preferably in South Florida. I suppose you could hire a shop to install them, but that seems like it could be a real crap shoot.
  22. Just an FYI for all those considering a new interior. I was trying to book a date with Aero Comfort to get an interior done, and they informed me that after 2024 (no available spots btw), they will no longer do removal and install. They will only accept interiors shipped to them, and will return for owner to handle install. I was very disappointed with this news….
  23. 33k for a completely new avionics panel, which can be done in a few days seems like an insanely good deal to me… that being said I just did spend 7x that and waited 13 months for my Aerostar to get a new panel… it’s all relative.
  24. Are you saying the blue tooth signal is lost so you can’t see traffic on an iPad, or that you can’t see traffic on your g1000 If it’s that you lose traffic on the g1000, it is not a blocked Bluetooth signal. When I had this problem it was the belly antenna.
  25. Cole aviation in Georgia is an excellent choice. there is a shuttle from Atlanta that can take you back and forth after you deliver the plane. if you would like to stay closer, Switlik aviation in ft myers is very good as well. He is not a Mooney service center, but has no problem using the 100hr guide. I have used them both more than once.
