  1. Mule deer up there.
  2. Driven by this field many times on my way to hunt the Kaibab Plateau. As far as I know, this is the only airport where you can fly over the Grand canyon below 3000' AGL. Its not much of a canyon, but it is the very beginning of the G.C. 35'x3700' runway. With a dog leg. And literally uphill both ways. The first about 1000' of runway 3 are very rough. Not that the rest is better, but landing long is advised. The views are stunning. Also, I'm probably famous in Japan now. As I was on downwind, I saw a van pull over and people pile out. After landing and taxiing to "parking", there was a crowd of about 15 tourists taking photos. We worked out that they wanted to get closer, so I brought them over and let them look in and get close ups and stuff. And then I ended up in a group photo in front of the plane. It was a neat experience.
  3. I have no idea, but I do know that if Garmin doesn't come up with something, they're going to lose out to Avidynes slide in replacements
  4. My avionics don't come on until 30 seconds to a minute after engine start. Is my install not legal?
  5. That's what my glider buddies told me. You can never hope to out climb, but you might outrun it if you have enough altitude
  6. Caution: language From a little virga to that kid thought he was going to die in just about 3 minutes. Imagine if you had decided to fly under that. Just a little rain, no big deal..
  7. I usually sit around 5-6 psi in my carb C
  8. Very painless. I already had a Garmin GTX330 transponder. Took the plane down to Chandler avionics. They removed my transponder and installed a loaner. Shipped mine off to Garmin for the ES upgrade. That cost me about $1500. Came back in last week (took about 4 weeks from Garmin). Garmin upgraded all the software, even replaced the display (for cosmetic reasons they said on the 8130). Flew back over to CHD this afternoon. Avionics guy spent about 2 hours running an additional wire from the 430W to the 330, upgraded the software in the 430w, did all the tests, and gave me a new transponder cert. All in all I was out under $2k. Glad to get it out of the way and for what I think is pretty reasonable!

  9. Click the link in the post you quoted. I just did, filled out my tail number, zip code, and email. I’m now enrolled for free. Awesome!
  10. I don't really even mind the markup. I do, but if I absolutely needed oil, it's nice to have a local place. But when you throw in the attitude, next time I'll just have stuff overnighted. Probably wouldn't cost any more and I wouldn't have to deal with her
  11. Reminds me. I’ll be at CHD at noon until who knows when on Tuesday to get my 330 swapped. Any chance you’ll be around or can I slip an envelope under your hangar door?
  12. There’s a small aircraft parts shop near my home field. I had some free time today and decided to change the oil after my 30 hours to Orlando and back last week. But, I was out of oil. So I swung in to check the place out and grab the stuff. Case of XC20w50 and a 48110-2 filter. I usually buy from aircraft spruce, with shipping it comes out around $115. She rang me up and told me $176. Now, don’t get me wrong, I expect to pay more for the local convenience, but $60 more? That’s a bit much. But whatever. I was there, so I paid. As I’m paying, she asks what I fly. I tell her a Mooney. At which point she proceeds to rant about how much she doesn’t like Mooneys, how cramped they are and she’d never fly in one, any self respecting pilot would have a bonanza like her husband, etc. i was pretty speechless. Charge a ton more than your competition? OK, I get it. It’s a convenience up-charge. Disparage your customers aircraft? Not cool. I wont be back to Aerozona....
  13. And a cool tach number!
  14. If I had a spare 25k rolling around, I’d seriously buy this plane just to have a “beater” to fly around when I just felt like burning 100LL.
  15. Why is it that cams and lifters in an automotive engine can sit for years and not do this? I rebuilt the engine in my Dodge (4.7l V8) with overhead cams. They were perfect. Over 250000 miles on it and 17 years old. Thing sits for months at a time. Are aircraft manufacturers using a different steel?
  16. KSSF-KPQL-KORL today. Over 2 hours actual. .5 of that with no GPS. don't know what happened (no NOTAMS) but I lost satellites on both the 430 and the Stratus. Got to hand fly VOR's in the soup. Made me feel like a real pilot!
  17. DVT-PEQ-SSF today. Headed to Orlando on Sunday. This is what it looks like in my plane anytime we fly more than about an hour... Felt like a moron at one point though. Filed IFR PEQ-SSF (even scored some actual!). Coming into the San Antonio area, the approach controller asked what my intentions were at SSF. Like an idiot I said "well, to land." I swear I could hear half the room cracking up when she came back and said "I meant what approach would you like". Ha ha ha.
  18. I have the solution, but I'm on vacation. I'll put together a parts list next week. About $15 at home Depot and you'll never spill another drop.
  19. Sounds to me like he can do it, it just hurts.
  20. I’m probably going to need to replace my pump sooner rather than later. My needle is doing the same. Is there a particular pump that is better for an O360-A1D than any other?
  21. What app is that @KLRDMD? I like the layout
  22. I had 60kts on him either way. On substantially the same engine and fuel burn
  23. Shush you, lol. He went that way because he was afraid of the Phoenix class B, I kid you not. Around he told ATC he was turning to Blythe so he could go direct DVT and avoid the class B.
