  1. Came across an old copy of my grandfather's. Couple pages I thought you guys might like. 252VV appears to still be flying, and the owner was a member here. Sorry for the rotation. I don't know how to fix it.
  2. January/February is just the right time to come hang out in my hangar and watch me work. Hahaha!
  3. This means I can tie down the tail when jacking up the plane again, right?
  4. Well... Hmm. On the return flight this morning, I could not reproduce. I wonder if it's also maybe heat related? It was about 80 OAT yesterday and 50 OAT this morning
  5. As it turns out... It looks like it's my Narco NCS-812 navcom. I was flying up to KSOW this afternoon. Everything was good. I switched to get the ATIS at KPAN (119.325). As I was listening, I noticed that my Stratus lost GPS. Then my 430. I thought, ok here we go again. But I started thinking. I turned the radio off. Instantly got GPS back. Then I started experimenting. I turned the radio back on. After a few seconds, I lost GPS. I flipped the frequency back to 126.5 (DVT ATIS), GPS instantly back. Kept playing and figured out that if the Narco is tuned to between 119.275 and 119.675, I lose GPS. Weird!
  6. I'll contribute. I landed at Catalina (AVX) a few weeks ago. It's not short (even though many pilots think it is), it's a little bumpy, but mainly it has a cliff right at the numbers. You can get some pretty good sink and/or buffeting there. So, I flew a steep approach, with a touch of power in. As I leveled off in ground effect, I added just a smidge more and held her off as long as I could. That's not how I usually land, at all. Like Yeti said, it is nice to have other methods in your bag of tricks. Flying 70mph on short final might be a bad idea if the winds are swirling, or short final is right over buildings or trees, or other causes of shifting air. Landing on the numbers every time is likewise not always the best. What if you're following a 787 and need to land past the 1000' markers? Do you know what your sight picture should look like to put the plane down 1500' down the runway (or more!)?
  7. The ELT is a Narco ELT10. As far I understand it doesn't transmit anything. It sounds like I'm going to have to do some experimentation to figure it out.
  8. The GA35 is on top of the airframe, behind the baggage compartment. The Stratus was on the glare shield, but it happened even with the Stratus powered off and not plugged in Just a thought.. could a cell phone gps interfere? Come to think of it (that I can recall) it's only happened when the kids are in the back seat.
  9. According to ATC, I was the only one reporting an outage, but... I was pretty much by my lonesome at low altitude. Everyone else was jets or not talking. It is interesting to note, though, it only happened around the restricted areas.
  10. Both. LOI message "using dead reckoning". When I switch to the satellite page, it shows zero.
  11. Nope. Plugged in or not had no effect. Even if I powered down the Stratus (it was running on battery) the signal didn't change. Can you elaborate? I'm not sure I get what you mean.
  12. This first happened to me a couple months ago after I installed a remote GPS antenna for the stratus. I removed it and the problem seemed to go away. But... it’s back. Flying to San Diego over the weekend, it happened 5 times enroute to KSAN, and once coming back. Each outage was maybe 1-3 minutes and if I scrolled to the satellite page, it showed zero satellites, but then you could watch them reacquire. Got old reporting loss to ATC and then back on again. My stratus (on the glareshield) never lost signal. Time for a new GA35 antenna, or should I be looking elsewhere??
  13. Definitely was not his friend, but I see the son nearly every day. But, you’re right, he probably had friends at the field that will look after it
  14. I don’t think he has any interest in flying. To my knowledge, he never even went up with his dad. “Dad” only had his license for about 2 years. Which is why I feel like something should be said. People who don’t own airplanes have zero clue about what happens to them or what they’re worth and why.
  15. Recently a guy a few doors down from my shop was killed in a plane crash (I posted about it here.). He owned a Mooney F. I have a passing acquaintance with his son, who really knows nothing about planes. The F is a really nice plane and I’d hate to see it rot. I have zero interest in buying it, but I feel like I should point out To the guy the perishable nature of planes. How would you approach that conversation, if at all?
  16. Coming into DVT yesterday from HII (Lake Havasu) I requested 25L as its closer to parking. The pattern was empty, except for one guy on a practice instrument approach. Controller asked me to keep my speed up so I could beat that guy in and get the runway I wanted. I was cooking on downwind. Nearly 180MPH GS. I pulled power completely out before turning base, started slowing, had gear down before I turned final, and dropped it in right on the numbers. I didn’t think you could slow a Mooney down that quickly, but you sure can. I like a challenge now and then, and it was a fun one.
  17. Sounds like you noticed he was flying aggressively, too. His girlfriend was also a pilot (and had recently been doing acro training) so it’s also possible she was flying. Don’t know how they’ll figure that out
  18. As in Sunday the 19th? It might have been. He brought the plane home on Saturday the 18th. someone sent me a picture of the plane post crash, pre NTSB. It’s really destroyed. No, I can’t post it.
  19. Showing off, pushing limits. I wasn’t there. I don’t know. But I know he was a born thrill seeker, so it wouldn’t surprise me.
  20. Some of the local CFIs said he was hotdogging pretty hard.
  21. He owned a business 3 doors down from mine. No idea how much experience he had, but I know he only got his tail wheel endorsement a month or so ago
  22. https://www.azcentral.com/story/news/local/phoenix-breaking/2018/08/20/small-plane-crashes-near-deer-valley-airport/1040859002/ He just bought the plane on Saturday. Flew a M20F out of DVT.
  23. We should. There’s several of us around. Eric is on the north side, Skip is down by the police hangar, I’m in the hangars just to the east of the aeroguard guys. I’m sure I’m forgetting a bunch. There’s a picnic/bbq area south of the police hangars. It’s a nice little area. We should all pull our birds over there some day when it cools off and have a little bbq!
  24. @MyNameIsNobody I’m out of town right now, but I think I have one of these in the hangar too. If you still need it, send me a message and I’ll look when I get back beginning of next week.
