Garmin Software Upgrade: GTN, TXi, GFC (v6.50)
ilovecornfields replied to Bryan's topic in Avionics/Panel Discussion
According to my avionics shop, they spoke to Garmin and removing the ground mode is a new “feature” in the software upgrade. Sounds like BS to me... -
I’m not sure how many dimensions my sound system has...normally if I’m listening to two radios #1 comes in on the left and #2 comes in on the right. With the GoPro it seems like it’s stronger on one side but you can still hear it on both. Not a big deal. Just have the garmin 750 with remote audio panel.
-
@Marauder only took me 2.5 weeks to get you an answer- yes it does get stereo, although it seems that the audio goes to both L and R, but will be louder on L or R depending on the source (for example, I can hear the #1 radio louder on the left and #2 louder on the right, but I hear both radios on both sides). GoPro Hero 4 black was $50 off today in Costco...

You’re probably right. I think it just fits the stereotype I have in my mind of the Cirrus driver with more money than brains who now has to take a different plane on vacation to Cape Cod because he backed his expensive plane into his luxury auto by not paying attention. He’s probably a nice guy who deserves what he has and it’s not my place to judge him. I think with the recent Thanksgiving holiday and realizing how fortunate we are compared to most other people in the world it was just hard for me to muster up some sympathy. That being said, if I’d done that I probably would have canceled my vacation.

#firstworldproblems Not trying to be a troll, but it’s hard to feel bad for someone that doesn’t even notice his car is still in the hanger and dents his Jaguar with his Cirrus. Maybe if it had been a Mooney I would have felt bad about it...

Would you accept a clearance from her?

Anyone Have ForeFlight Sentry Experience?
ilovecornfields replied to 231MJ's topic in Avionics/Panel Discussion
I have the Sentry and GDL88. Information seems to be the same from both. For a CO monitor, WAAS GPS, ADS-B in and AHRS I don’t think you can beat the price. Battery seems to last a long time, too. -
Garmin Software Upgrade: GTN, TXi, GFC (v6.50)
ilovecornfields replied to Bryan's topic in Avionics/Panel Discussion
I did the 6.51 update last week and only issue I found was that I lost the “ground” mode on the transponder. I spoke to the shop that had the issues with 6.50 and he said it seemed to randomly reset a lot of the settings so suggested writing down all of the settings prior to the upgrade (which you’re supposed to do anyway). Other than the transponder issue, 6.51 seems to be fine so far. Altitudes and TOD/BOD don’t display on the G500 but I don’t know if it’s worth upgrading to the txi just for that! Ended up having to update the G500, GDL88, GAD43 and flightstream software as well. -
Would you accept a clearance from her?
ilovecornfields replied to ilovecornfields's topic in Miscellaneous Aviation Talk
Well, it happened so clearly it’s not impossible. Improbable certainly. We had a recent thread about impaired pilots. I don’t think I’ve ever seen someone talk about impaired controllers. Would you take that takeoff clearance from a controller slurring his or her words and obviously confused? If you end up taking off and colliding with someone else, would someone expect that you should have known better then to accept a clearance from someone who was clearly impaired? I don’t have the answers, but since it clearly happened I think it’s worthwile to consider what you might have done. I personally liked the guy who was #4 and decided to shut down and wait it out. Seems like the smart move to me. -

Not sure if this has been discussed already but apparently a LAS controller had a stroke during her shift and kept controlling traffic (not blaming her since a stroke can affect your ability to tell something is wrong). What I thought was interesting was the pilots responses. What would you have done in this situation? -
Fuel efficiency in headwinds
ilovecornfields replied to jaylw314's topic in Miscellaneous Aviation Talk
Anyone else just use the Mike Busch approach of looking at the fuel totalizer and seeing how much fuel you’ll have when you land and adjusting the red knob to get what you want? I can burn between 10-18 gph at cruise in the Ovation. With “only” the 89 gallon tanks that’s a lot of variability I have when deciding what settings to use. While I like going fast, it’s rarely worth it to burn the extra dinasour juice just to gain a few minutes. Unlike some people here, I haven’t solved any partial differential equations since college and I’d rather fly then mess with an excel spreadsheet so the other methods don’t work well for me. I’d rather play with the real numbers in the air than the theoretical ones on the ground. -
Fuel efficiency in headwinds

I don’t know much about airplanes, but when I want to get “laminar flow” in the bathroom I use this: https://www.squattypotty.com/shop/poop-better/classic-ecco/ It lowers my “coefficient of drag” at least 50% if you know what I mean. The side effect might be that you get less time for your calculations. -
Fuel efficiency in headwinds
ilovecornfields replied to jaylw314's topic in Miscellaneous Aviation Talk
From: https://www.aopa.org/news-and-media/all-news/2017/august/pilot/efficiency-slow-burn To determine an airplane’s Carson speed, multiply its best glide speed by 1.32 (to increase it 32 percent). Going back to the Citabria, a best glide speed of 78 mph times 1.32 equals 103 mph. So 103 mph is the optimum airspeed—and flying at the highest possible altitude at which your Citabria can deliver 103 mph IAS will get the best result in terms of true airspeed and fuel consumption. Also, headwinds matter here, too, so the Carson speed changes with headwinds and tailwinds. If the headwind or tailwind component is 10 knots or less, don’t bother. It’s academic. In stronger winds, however, the Carson speed increases about one-third of the headwind component, and it decreases by the same fraction in a tailwind. For math majors, there’s a vast repository of complex formulas to back this stuff up. For the rest of us, best glide plus 32 percent gets excellent fuel efficiency at a reasonable speed. -
Baffle seal installation cost
ilovecornfields replied to ilovecornfields's topic in Modern Mooney Discussion
To answer my own question, ended up going to Kurt at Expert Aircraft (F70) since they had lots of experience installing the Gee-Bee kits. I have noting but good things to say about Kurt and the kit. Installation was fast, great guys (I ended up spending the whole day hanging out at the airport) and on my flight home my CHTs were easily 20 deg cooler. With the amount of gas I’m going to save not having to go extra rich with the crappy baffles this will pay for itself quickly! -
I like this video more. I think it’s the same concept:
-
Yeah, kind of ridiculous how quickly the battery drains. I’ll check if it’s getting stereo and get back to you.

“Stall” warning on rollout, very annoying..

You must be a fast learner. I just went back and looked at my transition training - 32 landings, 4 at night. Sounds like you have a good excuse to buy a GoPro... -
I bought this one. Seems to work. Not cheap. Will also charge your GoPro. Costco had a good deal on the hero 5 black. Nflightcam Audio Solution for... https://www.amazon.com/dp/B01MT3Q50Y?ref=yo_pop_ma_swf

Garmin Software Upgrade: GTN, TXi, GFC (v6.50)
ilovecornfields replied to Bryan's topic in Avionics/Panel Discussion
I just heard 6.51 is having issues as well. Anyone do the 6.51 update? @TrekLawler? -
I think those are great points. Probably worth remembering since CO has a much higher affinity for hemoglobin than O2 so if you get a big exposure on the ground, you’re probably even worse off than you would expect at altitude. I think that chart which I posted assumes sea level conditions. Pulse ox won’t help since very few can differentiate CO from O2 and CO exposure will cause an erroneously high reading for SpO2.

Control Saver Control Lock PIREP?
ilovecornfields replied to Rick Junkin's topic in General Mooney Talk
I bought one for my Ovation. Zero complaints. Takes about one minute to attach the clip the first time, 30 seconds to install after every flight (when I park outside). If I lost it I would buy another. -

.203? Amateur. I’ve seen people talking at >.480. I was actually just wondering if controllers ever do this. I’ve heard some exchanges on the ground that suggest that the pilot is not doing well but I’ve never heard a controller do anything about it.

I was thinking about replacing the baffle seals in my Ovation. I got a quote for $375 for the kit and $950 for the labor. Seems a little high for the labor cost. Anyone have any experience with this installation?
