  1. Yes, I used the optional Mount specifically for the Mooney and am very happy with it. In fact I moved it from my C to the F I am buying. I also have a card compass in my Cessna 140. They are wonderful.
  2. Worse yet would be if the key fell down and shorted some wiring or otherwise balled up the works. Glad all is well.
  3. I couldn’t wait to change out my compass for a card compass, but was perfectly good with mounting it in the original location. In the course of doing that I read that some folks had trouble getting it to work well with the magnetic effects of the steel passenger compartment cage and the panel. I managed to swing mine properly in the original location without the balls, but I read that putting it in the panel sometimes creates challenges. My $0.02,
  4. This thread brought to mind this video. Listen to what General Yeager says at about 1:00 in.
  5. Congratulations! I hope you love your C as much as I have loved mine. Like they are saying post some pictures. I hate to give up my C, but I hurt my shoulder and can’t handle the gear any more. Will post pictures of my F as soon as I get her. Maybe Tuesday. Now! Go fly the wings off of her!
  6. There’s a BUNCH of difference between gravel and grass.
  7. I have a Mooney and a Cessna 140. It shouldn’t be difficult to figure out which one is best suited for landing off pavement. IiMHO if this is the kind of flying you want to do you have the wrong plane. A Cessna 180 would be a plane that would handle the load and number of seats and give somewhere near the performance of a Mooney and be a MUCH better choice for gravel or grass strip flying. You don’t need a Ferrari for this work, you need a 4x4. Its a case of using the right tool for the right job. My $0.02,
  8. Well chrixer, you gave away your age with the AUTOEXEC.BAT and CONFIG.SYS comment.:). It’s okay though. I go back even further to the mini computers from DEC in the early seventies. Happy to see you home safe.
  9. I think Lance is posing a fair question.
  10. I NEVER said that anyone is wrong for complaining about prices. Please show me where I said that and I will apologize for it. I politely request that you reread what I wrote. There is probably no one that belly aches more about prices than I do. That was not my point. My point was that flying is expensive. I don’t like it any more than anyone else, but when someone is so strapped that a little over 1AMU causes them to get rid of their plane, they probably were already at a point they should have been out long before for their own good. I politely request that you don’t misquote what I wrote. If I was not sufficiently clear with the message I was trying to convey, I offer my apologies.
  11. Sorry SHU, But I am not responsible for expensive aviation, but I am a realist. $1,300 is a pot full of money, but unfortunately if you are going to fly, expenses of that amount and even higher are going to pop up as part of the picture. If your budget is that tight you probably would serve you and your family well by finding another hobby. Do I like it? Nope, but it is what is and I am not the one that made it that way.
  12. I personally wouldn’t be interested due to the history, but if I were, the paint job would probably make me walk away. I usually am a function over form guy, but for my taste, that paint job is hideous.
  13. Good job! I am sure yo7nwill be proud of it.
  14. There was some event in Texas about a year ago that drew the same response on this forum. Looking down your nose at a prospective customer is usually not a smart sales technique. They need someone to humble them the way my Grand Dad used to deal with new car sales people. He was showered and shaved, but he would put on his most ragged overalls and buy a car or pickup in the city where no one knew who he was. The bib pocket was stuffed with green cash. If they snobbed him he politely let them know that they missed a cash sale. If they didn’t and he cut a deal, he would sit down and count out the cash. He really enjoyed it. Someone needs to show these guys what a lost sale due to snobbery feels like.
  15. Paint doesn’t get you through the air. Be happy that you are in a Mooney.
  16. Congratulations! Look forward to hearing more about her.
  17. Wow! Those F16’s were able to keep a Mooney in sight until it landed? Those F16’s are some FAST aircraft!:)
  18. From my experience with this forum, registering, introducing yourself and describing the prospective purchase and location, will draw an encyclopedias worth of information. I did this when I found 7889P hangared on the field in Kerrville. I did not initially list the N number for fear that it might put someone else onto the plane. In other cases, it might be best to initially list the tailnumber as you propose in order to seek information about the plane. When I came to the forum seeking information, I was welcomed with open arms. I found someone to prebuy and all kinds of help. Maybe a database as you propose would work well, but I think you will find an amazing amount of helpful information here just using the forum as it is. My $0.02,
  19. What Navy person is telling you to leave? Whoever it is, ask that person if he/she is a pilot. My guess is no.
  20. Thanks for the update jet. My first cousin was the current proprietors Dad and passed away about a year ago. Sad to see this report.
  21. Crider in Mena, Arkansas. He is my cousin, but I am not biased.
  22. Trig T22. Not familiar with it. Can you point me toward more information?
  23. And that’s a shame. Baling out of aviation because of this expense would indicate that for that particular individual this is the straw that broke the camels back. Owning and operating an airplane is not inexpensive. If $1,300 can’t be tolerated in the aviation budget, that person probably should have gotten out earlier.
  24. The Skybeacon and 345 are much different in both functionality and price. My 345 was over $6,000 installed and that was with a 430 WAAS already in place. It costs even more if there is not already a WAAS receiver in place. The 345 brings wonderful functionality beyond ADS-B out. Skybeacon to 345 is an oranges to apples comparison. They provide solutions for different problems. The 345 in my Mooney with an in panel certified WAAS GPS brings a LOT to the table and costs a lot to implement. The Skybeacon is apparently a great solution for someone on a budget who wants to use ForeFlight/Garminpilot and a Stratux for their in functions. It is looking more and more like my little taildragger will get a Skybeacon and probably not before sometime after January 2020.
  25. The$18K for the 430W et al sounds reasonable, but if you will be flying IFR you really need to make an overlay or something to arrange a six pack. My $0.02,
