TruTrak Autopilot Pre Order's / Status Update
Skates97 replied to Jeev's topic in Avionics/Panel Discussion
My wife refers to them as BRU - 'Bathroom Remodel Units. When I told her how much it was to replace the governor last year she said "Ah, that's the bathroom remodel I want to do." Fortunately she likes flying, the plane continues to get maintained and upgraded, and I'm still shaving in the old sink in the master bathroom.. -
From a post over on POA and the pictures they have left the dirt area there on purpose for light GA aircraft. I suppose you could possibly shut down at the edge and push it onto the dirt, then pull it off before starting up, assuming the dirt is level with the ramp. It will be interesting to see how it does next Jan-Mar when we normally get our rains.

Where did you have it done?

There are a lot of different opinions and answers out there. I sold life insurance for a bit quite a few years ago. My personal opinion, at your age, find a good 30 year term policy. 'Theoretically' you shouldn't need life insurance by the time you get to retirement as the point of it is to replace the lost income that you can no longer provide as a result of your untimely death. By retirement one 'should' have enough that should they pass away, whoever is left will still be taken care of. To figure out how much I need, I looked at all of the debt (mostly a mortgage) and wanted enough that everything would be paid off and there would be enough left over to invest and allow my wife to raise the family off interest that it would generate. I know this doesn't apply to you, but those of you that already have a policy before you begin your PPL training and flying, take a look at the exclusions. Chances are that if you have had the policy for a couple of years that it will not exclude death as a result of a GA accident or other risky activity. Most policies will pay for any cause of death (including suicide) if it occurs after two years since the policy was purchased

That's a little disappointing.
-
I would as well.
-
Yes, on mine it is a short little hose from that one on the front to the generator.
-
Is it at the top back corner of the doghouse? I would love to see a picture of that, I think mine is going down to the carb heat box?

Neighbor two hangars down flew to Catalina yesterday in his LSA. He said it wasn't busy yesterday but he had to park in the dirt, they weren't letting piston singles park on the ramp. I'm not sure if they are still working on part of it.

I like the second one, you could have a couple kids sit on the end of the wings and randomly bounce up and down to simulate turbulence.

Oil Leak - There's the Problem
Skates97 replied to Skates97's topic in Vintage Mooneys (pre-J models)
The whole valve, $92.50 for the part. -
I would be interested as well, or at least if there's a way to get my sad old slider to hold the door open more reliably so it doesn't keep hitting me in the back if I'm not holding it open as I get in.

Oil Leak - There's the Problem
Skates97 replied to Skates97's topic in Vintage Mooneys (pre-J models)
I'll have to ask him if he can tell what was failing in it. On pre-flight when I check the oil I always shine a flashlight down in and look around, never saw any oil on the bottom piece of cowling below the quick drain. Maybe it was only when the engine was running and there was pressure that it was coming out, and flying it just put a nice misting around inside the cowling. There has been some oil around in various places but it was always just a little wet looking here and there, not enough to even drip out the bottom or run back the belly. I'm hopeful that I will have a dry, clean engine compartment at least for a little while now. As @Ragsf15e said, the airflow under the cowling is amazing. The leak apparently progressed enough that on the last flight it was blowing up out the front and onto the windscreen. The really amazing thing to me is the quick drain is on the right side, basically below the #3 cylinder, but it was coming out over the top of the cowling on the other side by the #2 cylinder. When I asked my A&P how long he wanted me to fly it after he put the dye in he said please, just one trip around the pattern. I'm guessing anything longer than that and it would have just all blown around so the whole engine compartment would be bright pink under the light and he would have no idea where it originated. -
My dad flew HC-130's all over Alaska, around the mountains, through mountain passes, etc... for four years back in the early 80's searching for downed/missing planes, stranded/missing climbers, and boats in distress. He is amazed at all the information available on my tablet.

I get what Hank is saying, and if I didn't live where I am I likely wouldn't be equipping ADS-B out. However, for all the reasons @Bob - S50 gave it makes no sense not to have ADS-B in. For under $150 you can build a Stratux and pick up an Android tablet for under $200. (They also don't overheat like an iPad)

Oil Leak - There's the Problem

No, she loves flying but has no desire to do the actual flying. -
I have excellent eyesight (as long as it's not closer than 18") and think I'm pretty good at spotting traffic, but on probably every flight there is someone that passes within 2-5 miles of me that I can't seem to find, despite my tablet telling me where to look.

Flew to Vegas last Friday and back on Saturday. On the flight back I started to get a fine mist of oil on the windscreen. Kept an eye on the oil pressure, lost about 1/2 a quart over the 90 minute flight. Emailed some pics to my mechanic and he stopped by the hangar to take a look, put some dye in the oil, cleaned the engine up, and told me to take it around the pattern once. I did that Tuesday after work and he went by today to see if he could see where it was coming from. I was worried about the #2 cylinder that has shown some very slight oil seepage for quite some time. He said there was no dye/leaks showing at the #2 cylinder, but the quick drain was spitting oil out and it was getting blown around. I guess on that longer flight (higher speeds) there was enough blowing around that it was coming up out the front of the cowling and back onto the windscreen. Small trail of oil across the top of the cowling after that 90 minute flight. #2 that I was worried was the problem, apparently just a bunch of oil from the quick drain that was swirling and blowing around. After the trip around the pattern with the dye, here's the problem... He gave me the part number that Spruce uses and told me I could have it sent to him and he will put it in. I told him I could just have my wife pick it up today and I'll stop by the hangar tonight to drain the oil and leave the part so he can swap it out tomorrow. Have I mentioned before that I think I have the best wife in the world? She encouraged me to get my license, buy the plane, and she picks up parts! Funny thing, she walked into Aircraft Spruce and the guy behind the counter recognized her and said "Pick up for Mr. Brown?"

I have not, but my mechanic at KFUL speaks highly of them. I know when I was based at Corona for a couple of years they were always busy with what seemed like a never ending stream of business. If you are looking around the Southern California area there is also Art Craft Paint at Santa Maria that some here have had paint their Mooneys. http://artcraftpaint.com/ @Bennett, @MooneyMitch, @mooneygirl

TruTrak Autopilot Pre Order's / Status Update

Good luck. I would be lucky if I made it through start-up before my wife noticed, let alone getting off the ground. -
I don't know, it pre-dates my involvement here on MS.
-
July I should be able to do. Mid-June my two boys and I are flying back to NC/VA, should be a great adventure.
-
I can't make it any of those dates... I would recommend waiting a month or so, I think there will be a large number of planes heading there as soon as it re-opens and I don't think I want to be part of that craziness. You might also have better weather later in the summer as far as the marine layer goes. Anything in May-June you run the risk of it not burning off until after noon or later.

Who did the reseal in 2011 and where is it leaking? Mine were stripped and resealed in 2012 before I bought the plane by Wetwingologists. The LH was great but the RH would leak if I put more than 20 gallons in it. Wetwingologists would fix it under warranty (even though expired by time) but I would have to get it across the country to them. None of the AP/IA's that I know wanted to break into it (I am assuming because they don't want to have to deal with another leak and then another and a plane owner wanting them to fix all of them. Long story short (I'll make a different thread with pictures later and post in my blog) but my AP/IA was willing to have me be the one to open it up and see what can be seen and approve the work. I suppose then it's on me and I can't keep bugging him about it. I was able to find the spot that was leaking, patch that small spot last Saturday and now I can fill it all he way with no leaks.
