  1. Many planes have rate based AP's. If they want to upgrade from a dg to an HSI the G5 allows them to keep the heading bug working. The G5+500AP will do everything you need but some individuals want to keep their current AP units and they will need a ki256/ki300/ea100/gad43 to keep it shiny side up.
  2. I'm actually the opposite. I really don't like the portable units panel mounted...a single iPad on the yoke for plates/charts and the rest certified is my choice.
  3. That's what happens when you hand prop a plane in the reverse direction...
  4. I think the listing is slightly misleading at first glance. Some might think it has ~850...
  5. The KI300 opens a lot of possibilities for those that want to keep things mostly steam and for those who want the new cheap(er) glass but want to retain their current AP. However, I've lost faith in the BK company as a whole and the only way I'll put one in my plane is if I can send the unit to Sandia for repairs etc.
  6. No reason to keep the AP or transponder. Keep your 750 and let them take everything else out.
  7. From the video you linked above, $16k for the equipment alone. Combining that with the info in he website means the STC and install are separate. If I were interested in the unit I would get to the show and get in writing that $20k installed price. No way an AP, engine monitor, gps/nav integration, panel work, etc can be installed for $2k...or even $4k.
  8. Looks like a beautiful plane. However, I'd have to price it with a run out engine...almost 30 years old with very few recent hours. Since you asked I'd probably price it around 100.
  9. I don't think they claimed the installed price is 16k. To me the website reads the cost of the equipment currently installed in the 172 is 16k. That would make it 16+2 (stc) + install probably $5-10k (WAG). My guess is the estimate of @teejayevans is spot on. Still a screaming deal IMO!
  10. I think the G5 HSI with your current AP will be lacking vertical guidance initially but both the 500 and 600 AP's should couple.
  11. To be fair he did mention the possibility of trusting them with a weedeater which is an absolute critical component of a well manicured lawn...
  12. I hope it is just the sensor. If so it will be a very easy fix. If not don't try to chase down the problem. 'Your current fuel sensors (2 per tank) are very accurate and you will not need the CIES sensors. The guages were in a great spot but almost impossible to find something that can fill the space. So yes @THill182 I agree that it is a very slippery slope and you can drop 40k very quickly before it's done. This is why you see a lot of forsale planes of this vintage with black tape on two or more guages (not something I'd recommend but it's your plane) Is it legal to have the old tach showing past redline even with a digital readout? edit: I absolutely enjoyed using the moritz guages for the past 15 years and tried my best to keep them going. However, every Mooney shop I talked to including Don said to move on when things go astray. So I did and now I'm getting everything ready for that 40k upgrade
  13. You could always swap the 440 with a 540. Used prices are 3k apart. I never use my 650 except for skywatch display and a second com. If I was upgrading a plane with a single gps I would continue with a single gps/nav/com.
  14. IMO the ifd100 is not a replacement for the larger 540 unit. If cost is a major factor or you have a large panel with the radio stack all the way to the right the ifd100 is very useful. However, I do not feel it provides anything major beyond foreflight (upload capability to the panel).
  15. Don't waste your money and time. The manifold and egt are the two most common failure points on these units. Cheapest way is to inop the broken portions and buy certified replacements. Otherwise a jpi 900/930 or ei 50 is the way to go.
  16. What jackn is looking for is an attitude output from the g5 to work with his current AP. Nothing on his AP will work without this information because it is attitude based not rate based. The simple solution is to keep your current AI and buy the G5 HSI or buy two G5's and move your AI to a backup position (not legal if you have a flight director). Garmin said future updates will allow additional features for approaches etc.
  17. During the summer months I cross Lake Michigan all the time. Normally climb to 9-13 ish and fly the same way I always do. Toss a couple life jackets in the plane and enjoy the flight.
  18. My sample size is one and I'm on the far right side of the bell curve but I also understand that others are reporting from experience on the left side. One thing is for sure AP maintenance from BK will not be getting any cheaper in the future.
  19. Just take out the 170 and put a replacement com or nav/com in place of the adf.
  20. So if you figure an average TBO of 10 years for the 256 and 20 years for the 525 how many pilots are still going to be flying their current planes at that point? My guess is you will be able to buy nice used 256/525 units for $400/$800 when pilots start to upgrade the units...you could fly a long time for little coin. Can you even call yourself a CB looking at the upgrade cost?
  21. It's actually the perfect time to replace the 430w...for the $6k delta you get a massive upgrade and all the wiring stays the same. So all you have to do to install the unit is remove the old rack, make some room, and install the new rack. This is a wonderful way to upgrade the panel minus some possible Garmin AP issues.
  22. The only picture I have of mine is the attachment portion. I modified a snowblower for the unit.
  23. That brings up a good point. Trek said in another thread that the G5 stc was only good for connecting with a Garmin gps/nav/com or nav/com. I'm sure it will work fine with the ifd440/540 but when you start connecting the AP etc I'm curious about the legal aspects of integrating with Avidyne.
  24. For me it is not legal to install the G5 as a primary unit because I have a flight director and FIKI. From what it looks like I might be wise to buy an Aspen system as (Trek mentioned on another site they are currently working with Aspen to integrate w/ Garmin s AP) it might be more likely to work with the 500 AP vs the G500 which will probably need the 600 AP?? Or will Garmin demand all Eagles, Ovations, Bravos, etc use the more expensive unit?
