  1. Ha, that's what happened to me too.
  2. My 65E has it but one of the wires unscrewed. Haven't hooked it back up. I can feel the fuel selector to tell the position and I have flashlights if I need them so I don't really need it. Tim
  3. I was able to get in an ILS and an RNAV yesterday. The frequency auto tunes when it auto switches to VLOC. That's really nice but makes me lazy. If anyone is interested I'll try to make some video of some approaches.
  4. Push the MAP button left side of middle gives you the map layout of the new hold.
  5. There's two ways to change the data, use the knobs to scroll over the 318 or just touch the 318 heading. Then change it to 090 which is your inbound heading (shown below) by using the knobs or enter it on the pop up keypad (not shown). You can also change hold direction (left/right), and crossing altitudes here. Notice it also says we are holding West of the VOR as ATC instructed.
  6. Holds. Here's what I've leaned. I wanted direct KAFW to UKN and hold West on the 270 radial. But below is what I get. The problem is it gives me a hold on my course heading of 318, I assume because there is not a published hold. You have to open the FPL tab (which is right of center in photo above) to edit the hold. Which will look like this...
  7. About the Pilot Safety training...is it worth it? I think it's not well produced but if I lost this USB i might buy another one. It's hard to say.
  8. I give the training from PilotSafety a 2.5 out of 5. That's just my opinion. If you're really interested in why I felt this way about the content pm me. I feel it's more important to get a safety pilot and fly some task oriented flights with the new equipment. For example the first day I did an RNAV approach. Next 2 flights tracking and holds and I'll do another flight later this week with holds (I think I finally figured it out) and some ILS. Tim
  9. Mark, I was going for that audio panel until I found out Avidyne's audio panel will allow me to monitor Com2 on the IFD440. The Garmin unit I had installed for the 2nd Nav/com is a really nice unit as well. The monitor button on it actually mutes the secondary com frequency when receiving on com1 which makes it useless for getting ATIS while under ATC control near a class B or C.
  10. So about how much are we looking at for adding fuel flow?
  11. Well, I ASSumed I needed the Gamis. I made a couple 1-2 hour trips last week and I'm starting to learn my plane a bit more each time. It's hard to tell anything with the left bank of digits missing on the JPI so I need to get that fixed first. It looked like when I get to about 350 degrees on the 1 and 4 cylinder, 2 and 4 are anywhere between 30-50 degrees cooler. But the engine runs rough. When I get the engine smoothed out by enrichening the mixture number 1 and 4 get about 380 degrees. I need to get the JPI fixed and get someone to go up with me that knows what they're looking at. It's very possible there is nothing wrong...except with the operator! Tim
  12. I started upgrading my instrument panel. I recently got my plane back and I'm really liking it. Looking forward to getting it closer to what I want but this is acceptable for now. I had to make 2 trips from Fort Worth to Oklahoma City last week and it was great...very happy right now. My avionics guy rearranged the instruments for now to a 6 pack layout. Much easier on me. This pic doesn't show the Avidyne transponder or the ADS-B IN box. Next upgrade will be an audio panel and maybe the JPI 9xx. Tim
  13. How difficult is it to add a fuel flow? 65 E I have a JPI 7xx. I need to send it in because while it was in the shop the left bank of digits went out. The shop is going to make sure something didn't get unplugged but I figured if there's something they have to do to the unit is do it while it's there although me feeling is that it's already there and I just need the sensor. I'm going to add gami injectors and was thinking they may need fuel flow. I want to upgrade to the 9xx at some point so I don't want to get too deep into this one. Tim
  14. Congratulations. Good luck in the new rating. It's so much easier to have a plane any time you want, especially when training. The good thing is you'll be learning the old way. Once you get everything down with ILS the RNAV stuff is a piece of cake. Tim
  15. Really nice interior, James. Looks like they added some lumbar support. I'd like that and a little bit of lift. I feel mine sits low. Now that you're done I feel ok saying it looks like the previous owner was a mechanic without a lift or a creeper who worked on drive lines and flew to work daily. But the new interior is beautiful. I'm sure I'll be asking questions when the time comes. Tim
  16. Still having a bit of trouble changing the hold to different than what the Avidyne gives me. For example. Direct to MPQ VOR and hold West on the 270 radial standard turns. If my heading is 330 to the VOR, all I have to do is touch that magenta block (or gray if I'm not yet direct and tell it go direct). Then select the option of Hold (or any of the V airways). Now it gives me a hold but I want to select a different radial...seems like it gives me a hold, in this case of an inbound course of 330, on the 150 radial. According to the training videos you should be able to select that route again and it allows you to edit the radial you are holding on (which will be a reciprocal of your inbound leg...in this case hold on the 270 radial and your OBS would be tuned to 090 TO). Does the GPS/OBS setting have anything to do with it? Or is it a 'view' setting for the FMS button? Tim
  17. Sounds like someone talked you into something new at OSH. What did you get?
  18. Wow. I'll be following this thread. Let us know what you find. I figured I'll leak test mine soon enough with fall coming. Tim
  19. Yes, that bit of info, as well as how to get it done, is in the video. Disclaimer...I skipped over that section. Since I had to have new cables I let someone else do it.
  20. Charlie, the 340 is pretty cool too. It has a flight timer and a stop watch which I need to remember to use.
  21. The IFD 440 does get hot. I talked to Sam who assured me there are 2 fans in the unit and it has over heat protection that warns you and if you ignore the message the system will shut itself down. So far in all these 100 degree days I have had no problems. Things I like so far: The 'Switch Tanks' feature is awesome. Just what it says, a little message appears on the side of the screen when it's time to switch tanks. You set the time in 15 minute increments. The FMS page allows you to see your map and your routing at the same time. That always bugged me about the GNS 430, it seemed I was always missing some info. You can use the knobs for most of the tuning and selecting even though it has a touch screen. The first day out was bumpy and the touch screen became useless. Geofill is great...I feel like I'm cheating. The frequency history has come in handy and only have about 5 hours on the unit. USB port charges my iPad while in flight. Traffic is easier to see on the screen than I though it would be. The DATA tab on the right of the screen gives ETA and other data while being able to see the map at the same time. I'm sure I'll have more.
  22. First PIREP is on PilotSafety.org and their training series on the Avidyne (specifically the media that it comes on). I ordered the USB version and it showed up in a couple days...so far, so good. I've purchased training aids from King and Pilot Workshops. I highly recommend these two companies for the ease of using their products. The Pilot Workshop USB stick works on just about anything I use it on, even the TV and King allowed me to download the videos to my Apple products or view them online on any device. However, the Pilot Safety USB is quite annoying. You might want to go with the DVD. The only thing I was able to get their security to work on was my Mac. The instructions say if it doesn't work on your computer, then try another one! Really? But I do recommend the training from what I've seen so far. Video quality and quality of instruction so far has been good. Gary presents the material great and explains things very well. I'll have a better PIREP of the actual material once I finish the training.
  23. I thought I'd start a thread where we could share info on the Avidyne GPS units. If we could keep the thread on track that would be great. I'm looking for info as much as sharing what I find. I would like to focus this thread on Instrument flying but much of it will be for anyone wanting to learn their equipment. This spring I purchased my '65 M20E and immediately replaced the Garmin with the Avidyne equipment. So far I'm impressed.
  24. Holy cow that is a good plane. All the mods keep the 201 blues in check too.
