It's too bad Garmin isn't trying harder to keep Android version as feature-packed as the iPad version.

Running Aeroshell W80 from now until spring. Lycoming says that's good down to 40 deg F. Typical mid-winter highs are low to mid 50's (F). Typical lows are in the 20's (F). We'll have an occasional cold snap that might get a day or two into the teens.

It's eventually going to get cooler in Tennessee. That has gotten us thinking about an engine heater on our 201. This will be our first winter with it. The club planes that I've been flying for 2 years all have block (oil sump) heaters that we keep plugged in while parked. East TN has pretty mild winters, but some of the days are cold enough to probably warrant an engine heater of some kind. Should we consider an oil sump heater for our Mooney? I recently found the Twin Hornet online (link below) as well. Has anyone tried this on a 201? I like that it's only in the cowl when you need it, and I like that it will warm the cylinders as well. http://www.aircraftheaters.com/aircraftheaters

We use tempest because that's what the mechanic suggested. He suggested it because of the magnet.

I checked out a friend's airplane today with a recently installed G5. When you push the cursor button and scroll all the way to the right, there is a HSI button. Selecting that brings up an HSI. I know that Garmin has not (and reportedly plans not to) certified the G5 to be used as a HSI. For those that have the G5 installed, do you have this page also? I would guess that it's "not for navigation" if it really is in there on the STC'd G5.

Garmin 480 - ADS-B certified?
AaronDC8402 replied to Schinderhannes's topic in Avionics/Panel Discussion
Does this help? http://garmin.blogs.com/aviationalerts/2015/04/service-bulletin-1519-gns-480-cnx80-software-upgrade-to-version-24-with-gps-software-upgrade-to-vers.html We just sent out our Garmin 330 for a 330ES upgrade with the intent of connecting it to our 480 for ADSB out compliance. -
It seems like the WD-40 would be especially ineffective if you fly through above freezing visual moisture before climbing into the freezing level.

My motorcycle logic has always been, assume you're invisible AND every other vehicle on the road is trying to kill you. Same logic is pretty good for flying, especially the invisible part.

They must have been using a GNS480.

Just bought my first airplane - M20J!
AaronDC8402 replied to Bug Smasher's topic in General Mooney Talk
Congrats on the purchase. How do you like flying it? That was a plane we spent some time thinking about when we bought our 201 recently. I remember it had a really nice interior and had a nice panel. Ultimately, the distance to California stopped us from pursuing it as an option. -
The only bird strike that I've personally witnessed was at night. A couple of guys were in a 172 on short final and hit 3 geese. No significant damage, but it rattled the pilot pretty good. Geese tend to hang out at one end of that runway (26 end of KDKX) certain times of year at night. If it's dark, I fly in from the other direction if possible just for that reason.

EGT Rising Fast on Two Cylinders

Yes. On the ground and in the air. Mag seems normal. -
EGT Rising Fast on Two Cylinders
AaronDC8402 replied to AaronDC8402's topic in Modern Mooney Discussion
Update: Found debris in fuel injectors for cyl 4 and the slightest amount in cyl 3. Injectors for cyl 1 and 2 looked clean. The plan is to clean all the injectors and see what happens. -
EGT Rising Fast on Two Cylinders
AaronDC8402 replied to AaronDC8402's topic in Modern Mooney Discussion
I'm honestly not sure how to get a graph out of the engine monitor. It's a EDM700 that I haven't put much effort into learning other than watching the EGT and Cyl temp bars for reference. The numeric display is not working correctly, so exact numbers aren't available. We're planning to upgrade the EDM at some point sort of soon. By my memory (and a few cell phone pictures), cruising at 10,000 MSL, 20" MP, 2500 rpm, 12.5 gph, cyl 1: 1450 deg F EGT; 350 deg F cyl temp cyl 2: 1450 deg F EGT; 300 deg F cyl temp cyl 3: 1050 deg F EGT; 300 deg F cyl temp cyl 4: 1100 deg F EGT; 350 deg F cyl temp From this scenario, leaning further decreases cyl 1 and 2 EGTs (already LOP) and increases cyl 3 and 4 EGT's (still way ROP). Further leaning also results in engine roughness. -
I made it to Dayton and back with less extra time than anticipated. Unfortunately, the engine developed a small issue a little prior to landing in Dayton (another thread started about that). I decided it was best to take advantage of the ideal weather today, and fly back home rather than sweat it through likely IMC tomorrow. I19 was nice enough and very reasonable overnight tie down fees ($6/night). I'll plan to make another trip soon just to see the AF museum. Too much actual work on this work trip.

I just returned from a 450 nm round trip with a slight engine issue. After exiting some rough IMC, I noticed the cowl vibrating. The only other time I notice this is when over-leaning the engine just prior to putting a little richness back in. After noticing the cowl vibration, I put some fuel back in and the vibration went away. I pretty quickly noticed that cylinders 1 and 2 were running the typical ~1450 deg F EGT, but 3 and 4 were running much cooler EGT (as if they were running too rich). Cyl temps were also a little cool on 3 and 4, but all were within typical ranges. My theory is that the rough IMC loosened some debris, and it's now clogging fuel injectors 1 and 2. Any other suggestions to consider?
-
I'm guessing it's coincidence. I'll have to look at what hours the museum is open. That seems like the type of place I would want to spend a day in. I'm not sure I'll have that amount of excess time available.

I'll be flying to Dayton, OH in a few days for a meeting at Wright-Patterson AFB. I'm planning to fly into I19. Two questions: 1. My flight path takes me directly over Sporty's (Clermont Co I69). I've never been there before, but I've heard it's worth a stop if I've got some extra time. What do you guys think? Worth checking it out in person. If they've got a giant showroom full of stuff that's in there catalog, I could enjoy drooling over some aviation gadgets. 2. Dayton has lots of aviation history. Any suggestions for aviation related must-see things in the area?

Any idea if the 440 tablet control is available through an Android tablet as well?
-
I have used these (the foam ones)... https://www.plugfones.com/product-category/replacements/ ...with the clarity aloft headset before. I thought they worked great. Later when I built my own in-the-ear headset, Plugfones were what I used as the headphone portion. I generally prefer my cheap, custom headset over my Lightspeed ANR headset.
-
I would suspect an ignition issue also. Spark plugs are a good first place to look. Possibly mag timing or a failing mag. Have you tried doing a mag check just before shut down? I wonder how bad an idea it would be to do a mag check while cruising?
-
I strongly suggest http://planecover.com/low_wing_covers.htm for a plane cover. Our plane came with a cover (can't remember which brand), but the cover from Jim is much better fit and finish.

Is there a BBQ restaurant there on the field at Dalton? Or is this a catered event? -

If I weren't planning to fly to Chicago this evening, I'd be there. I usually don't miss an opportunity involving BBQ. -
Advice Needed - First Flight with baby and spouse
AaronDC8402 replied to Seth's topic in Miscellaneous Aviation Talk
That "Where is Baby" book is a good one. My son is 20 months old, and still requests it about once a week. If you don't already have it, try to find a book called, "Away in My Airplane". There was about a month that my son wanted to read that book multiple times every day. Glad to hear everyone traveled well.
