  1. Awesome, thanks for that. I’m hopeful that they did good work - despite possibly replacing more parts than was strictly necessary.
  2. I’ve tried to keep track of the latest recommendations on MS, but the two most recent top choices seemed to be unavailable (originally Select Aircraft in Lancaster and then Aircraft Ignition Services after that), and I’d read some recent positive things about both Kelly and QAA. If feels like experiences vary widely with all of these shops.
  3. The shop did ask Kelly to send the old parts back, but I have not seen them yet.
  4. I had contacted both QAA and Kelly, and QAA quoted me a 3-5 week turnaround while Kelly quoted 3-5 days. I've heard lukewarm feedback on MS about QAA, so it seemed like Kelly was the better choice...
  5. My D3000 mag/s just came back from an IRAN at Kelly, where apparently they replaced a whole bunch of parts. But the one that sounded strange to my mx shop was marked “wrong housing.” Is it possible that Bendix put the mag in the wrong housing at the factory, and no one noticed? If the housing was worn or cracked or otherwise in need of repair, I’d understand, but this sounds odd to me too. Seems especially curious since Kelly just received a PMA for the D3000 housing last year. Is this a normal thing?
  6. I know that the company is for sale, but my understanding is that they’re still open and making parts. If they’re still making parts, I would imagine that the NBS is one with steady demand.
  7. We haven't seen @Jonny around for quite a while, but the NBS was one of the items on the top of his priority list. They did have some available for a little while (see other related MS threads), but have not been available lately. Maybe Jonny can advise whether these will be produced again by Mooney. There's clearly demand for these, and at this point there are quite a few of us who might buy a second one just to have it on the shelf.
  8. Again, I'm totally ignorant of this sort of thing.... But how many springs would you have to test from a batch? Is there a sweet spot for a min quantity from a pricing / testing standpoint?
  9. I don't know anything about metallurgy, but didn't the whole NBS issue start because there was a small batch of bad springs? Is there a way to have a shop make an OPP with confidence that it won't suffer the same fate? (Asking because I have no idea -- can you test these things somehow?)
  10. I don’t have big enough tanks to get a 130-mile discrepancy between statute and nautical.. At least, not without some serious 201er hypermiling
  11. Random guess … one was showing distance to next waypoint and the other two were showing distance to destination?
  12. Does anyone know off the top of their head how you can retrieve the serial number from the unit itself?
  13. As far as I know, there are zero companies currently manufacturing the D3000 mags. Kelly has a PMA to make every component including the housing, but technically they can’t produce a brand new mag.
  14. I hope this isn’t the “after” picture
  15. Yep. This is a pretty recent addition to GP, and a nice way to highlight issues that may affect your destination. https://www.garmin.com/en-US/newsroom/press-release/aviation/garmin-pilot-app-adds-new-terminal-environment-notam-alerts-and-graphical-runway-closures/
  16. I know that I'm in the minority on MS in this regard, but I think that finding/buying a good airplane is hard, and the idea of selling a great plane to get an unknown one with an additional feature is really unattractive to me. I'd argue that adding FIKI provides as much utility as many similarly-priced avionics upgrades.
  17. It’s the merch section of mooney.com
  18. Yeah, that was what I guessed from their brochures, since the K was in the FIKI brochure but the J was only in the non-FIKI list. I presume there’s no technical reason it couldn’t be done, but more likely a limited market?
  19. The K has only one battery too iirc - the second battery was added for the long bodies.
  20. I believe you can buy a FIKI install, which is about $10k more than the non-FIKI setup. ETA: They list the K model but not the J model in the FIKI brochure, so I dunno. https://www.cav-systems.com/wordpress/wp-content/uploads/2019/04/TKS-Mooney-M20-FIKI-Specification-2019-2.pdf

  22. I’m not sure what GAMI’s long term plan is, but there’s nothing stopping them from licensing G100UL to any number of different manufacturers who can compete on price and service.
  23. A question about regulatory requirements for logging flight time can be a teachable moment - reinforcing the need to check the regs, and getting the student in the habit of staying up to date on changes. Imo it's perfectly acceptable for the instructor and the student to review the regs together, and potentially review interpretation letters as needed to cover specific use cases. I have a pretty decent understanding of the regs, but far from perfect, and my standard answer to any non-trivial reg question is "let's get the book."
  24. I’ve been off on a spelunking expedition in Google since I saw your post. I haven’t followed European approvals for G100UL (which is the only UL avgas I’ve been really excited about ever), but it’s an interesting question. Apparently the secret sauce for GAMI (aromatics) is a bit controversial in Europe, though maybe less so than TEL.. Anyway, here’s a couple of random interesting links fwiw .. https://www.iaopa.eu/contentServlet/iaopa-europe-enews-august-2021---special-edition (IAOPA update on UL fuels) https://www.hjelmco.com/upl/files/41143.pdf (business school paper with a 2010 date - apparently it’s been updated)
  25. I think it’s @tmo
