  9. Hello Mark, " Kind of scary to put down a deposit on a plane a thousand miles away pending a pre-buy when I might hate the thing????" So here is a short part of my story ; I flew , owned a grumman traveller, had kids , wife made me stop flying ,sold plane..15 years go by...Kids are older, wife leaves, get divorced, within 8 weeks buy a RV 8 kit ( this is going to take a while to get into the sky) Spend nights watching "stratobee" on youtube in a twin aero commander, thats what i'm getting, somehow I get on Parrot Wizard youtube videos and he has a Mooney , I watch all his videos.Decide I must have a Mooney. Find a Mooney in Reno area, I'm in Pennsylvania , make a contract pending prebuy, send deposit , passes prebuy , complete sale , Paid for in full. .......... Then I start to fly again and fly in a Mooney in Virginia. Bought it sight unseen, trusted the A&P IA , Never really been in a Mooney. I was shocked when I got in and It is small , I thought , what have I done , after a hour , it is not that small , and after 30 hours it is great .slowly expanding my flying envelope. I fly about twice a month to see my son in college,he makes me buy him breakfast, about a 30 minute flight . My ex has to drive, about 2 and a half hours. (I'm mean) Would I do it again ,YES. Even without the flying the Mooney has moved me to new experiences I never expected. Come to Altoona we can fly all day . I am not ready for the trip there yet. . Or buy it anyway you wIll be happy with it. CARL

  17. This is a terrible story . I have alway wanted to be a professional pilot . My father told me I could not be one because I wore glass. (WWII Bombadier), so I became something else.( thats the terrible part) but maybe I could fly jumpers up and become a professional pilot ( defined as earning money ), a life goal attained . I am 58 , If you dont do it this year , next year you'll be a year older. I flew today , flight following , Cleveland Center said . "Airport ahead 20 miles, 12oclock." I was lost for a proper response , I did not say "well yeah" which is what I was thinking . so I said "Affirmative" but I still don't know what the right response would be. any ideas?
  18. And then there is that darn hot start , warm start , cold start IO360
  19. I don't think there is a FAA requirement of flight hours for a complex endorsement. from FAR PArt 61 Sec 61.31 Additional training required for operating complex airplanes. (1) Except as provided in paragraph (e)(2) of this section, no person may act as pilot in command of a complex airplane, unless the person has-- (i) Received and logged ground and flight training from an authorized instructor in a complex airplane, or in a flight simulator or flight training device that is representative of a complex airplane, and has been found proficient in the operation and systems of the airplane; and (ii) Received a one-time endorsement in the pilot's logbook from an authorized instructor who certifies the person is proficient to operate a complex airplane. (2) The training and endorsement required by paragraph (e)(1) of this section is not required if the person has logged flight time as pilot in command of a complex airplane, or in a flight simulator or flight training device that is representative of a complex airplane prior to August 4, 1997.
  20. there is no way to get an atp. Jump plane is fine, or maybe banner towing .
  21. Tomorrow I should hit 30 hours in the Mooney M20 E. This is amazing to me since I just obtained it this year. I now expect to fly 50 hours this year. Money is a driving factor and I spend about $116 per month in fuel , $136 per month in hanger rent .It is insured but I will deal with that only once a year. There will be problems, I know, but I have not had those jump up and get me yet. If it is too much, then I will leave it in the hanger until I can get things fixed, I'll deal with that as it comes. The story of my plane is too convoluted for this post, but as posted, I bought it in Reno, I went out there and spent a week with aviation people, eating, drinking and touring the area ,waiting for the plane to be ready. It was't and I got Charlie Davies to fly it back . I reached him through Mooneyspace. I was at an airport getting cheap fuel , the pilot of the JUMP school came over and said what a great Mooney I had ( I still don"t understand ) and then was telling me about his job taking people up to jump, they need a pilot for the weekend at $30 /hour tach. Wait a minute , could I be a professioal pilot???? , me,a ready to retire teacher of respiratory therapy. So I think I need a instrument rating and a commercial rating now . I should get the Instrument rating first . Don't get me wrong , I have not quit my job, but I am thinking instead of retiring and driving for Uber . I would perfer to take jumpers up and let them off at 12,000 feet or so. This path and my writing, somtimes described as a cross between Joyce and Keroac,(on this site) is only because of the Mooney and Mooneyspace. I invite all responses.
  22. You are flying with the radio removed. your compass should be off . Are you going to replaced it with another one? after the install your compass should be recalibrated. If you are not going to replace it , the compass is ready to be recalibrated now . on and off is one matter. in and out is another matter .
  23. this is an amazing story because of the similar events and the similar time frame. my story is the same one I ended up with a 67 E
  24. It is not the cost of ownership that shapes the decision to buy a plane, but the inability to live without one.
  25. I was wondering what Don Kaye does? He is a landlord . an Engineer A flight instructor extraordinaire And I've seen him is private jets with rock starts. The world's most interesting man ? I could be mistaken . Tell me Don please. carl
