Yes, I called a couple of places and both came back with the same price. If my Heading gyro and attitude indicator were not so shitty, I would leave them alone and just go with a GPS. Unfortunately, I will need a plane I can depend on come next year for my work commute and I don't want to find myself in a bad situation over a couple of dollars. I am also considering simply trading in the C for an E or F that may already have much of what I need/want to include an AP. This may end up being the best course of action because I don't want a $65k C that is only worth $45k.

Gents, I am now seriously considering the installation of a GPS and PFD in the 63C so that I can use it reliably for IMC. My budget will be around 20K and the GPS I would like to go with is the GTN-650. Based on my research, it looks like it will set me back right around 14K installed. What I would also like to do is to replace my POS attitude indicator and gyro with a digital capability. I'm not entirely familiar with what I should be looking at to keep my cost under control and I am looking for some guidance from the crowd.

How does one upgrade the doghouse? Is there a kit available somewhere? I don't even know what would indicate the need to upgrade. As far as I can tell, my C has a good doghouse but I def can't keep temps where I would like to in certain phases of flight.

bad in flight mag check, potential exhaust valve abnormality - next steps?

I hope you figure out your issue. I normally do not lean until I am leveled off and pull the prop back to 2500 or lower. If I try to lean in the climb, I notice CHT's easily exceed 400 on 2, 3, and 4. Once the engine is leaned out at my causing altitude, #2 and #4 run between 380-400. I have also noticed that the slightest amount of leaning or richening at this point can make the difference between exceeding 400 in any given cylinder. I will most likely OH the carb at some point in the future but the engine runs well for the moment and I'll take that for now. -
Some of you guys are too damn old.

We once again managed to escape the bad weather expected to engulf VA beach with trip to NY. As soon as we got north of Langley, there's wasn't a bit of turbulence all the way to NY. Just a gorgeous day for flying and another flight in the logbook.

WD-40 will also remove the grime/soot/grease. It worked exceptionally well last time I cleaned up the belly.

Oscar, Do you have an engine monitor?

I usually climbout 120-130mph, which is well above Vx or Vy and there is no change. Here is another interesting observation though. On mine, if I run ROP in cruise, #3 easily goes above 400. The slightest movement as you approach peak has a very drastic change on #3 CHT...I'm talking 40 degree drop within a couple of minutes as I approach peak. I attribute all this to the carb, of course.

Interesting that even after throwing all this money at the problem, it didn't go away and here I thought anything could be solved by throwing enough money at it. Perhaps some more money should be thrown at the mooney? In all seriousness though, your plane looks much better with the cowling closed up and that pointy spinner. I have the same thing on mine and obviously, I like it. As far as CHT'S go, I have noticed lately even in this 95 degree heat wave that my hottest cyl (#3) has not gone past 420 in the climbout on the first takeoff of the day. All other cylinders remain 410 or below and will quickly cool off to the mid 300's after takeoff. However, if I go for my gas stop and takeoff within 10 mins of landing, I def see #3 reach 430-450. However, this is about the worst possible case I have observed. At this point, I may look at timing when I OH the mags next annual but until then, I'm just going to live with the problem.

Get in touch with "Aerodon" here on MS and he will hook you up. If you are near VA beach, my mechanic will install it for you for a very reasonable price. Shoot me a message if you want any more info.

Nate, I suppose you could say it was resolved after spending a little under 3k to have an EDM-830 installed. I now see my oil pressure remain well within the factory green arc as shown by the digital readout on the engine monitor. I would highly recommend a digital engine monitor as I don't think I will ever own an airplane without one. It gives you a lot of piece of mind and saves you fuel in the process.

Looking back, I wish I had taken the written when it was available. I'm still on active duty but getting out soon and my options are to either fly for a regional that will pay for it or drop a good sum of money to get it myself. Kicking myself now!

Upgrades to the panel - best bang for the $$$$
par replied to Patto's topic in Vintage Mooneys (pre-J models)
Get in touch with Don here on the board and buy a EDM-830. Then find an independent AP and have him install it. Total cost will be less than 3k and it is so worth the cost. PM me if you would like more insight. I have a 63c myself and that's what I did for my engine monitoring needs. -
My initial impression of their operation was very good, even though it was just over the phone. They provided me with all the info I wanted and did not seem annoyed or in a hurry to get off the phone. Hearing good things about them from you all certainly gives me confidence in their ability to do the job well. Even though they are completely across the country from me, I will most likely take my mooney there as well, if I decide to go the shop route.

As someone already eluded to the advantage of having some cash standing by, all I will say is that if your max price is 60k, you should look at keeping it more around 50k and holding onto the 10k for the initial set of issues. Problems are inevitable and I am very glad that I only spent 29k on my purchase of my C because at this point, I'm 40k into it. The things I've had to do to it will not increase the value all that much. However, it is now a reliable airplane that hasn't failed me so far. I'm sure I'll be spending more on it in the near future but those items will add significant value. Just my 2 cents.

As my C approaches TBO,I have the option of a field OH that will save me a substantial amount of money (>5k) when compared to using Corona Aircraft engines out in CA. This is considering the worst case scenario of needing a new crankshaft and camshaft. So, my first questions is, does anyone have a PIREP on the shop in question? I did a search on here but did not come up with anything positive or negative about Corona A/C. Second question, how much value will I potentially lose for doing a field OH vs shipping it off to a shop? No matter which way I go, I'm going to go with factory cylinders and will be doing all accessories and fuel system as well. If I go the field OH route, I can get the prop OH'ed as well. Please share your thoughts on this delima.

This is what I made last summer: After having used my CB A/C now for a couple of summers, I would change the following about my design when I build another one. 1) Use 2 fans instead of 1 or a splitter to direct airflow as needed 2) Avoid using any sort of corrugated/flexible hose to minimize losses 3) Make it large enough to handle about 30lbs of ice, which will last for over an over even on the hottest days 4) You do not need a massive pump to circulate the water. The one I use now is actually made for a fish tank and does very well Overall, it works very well and if I were to fly with my baby girl, she would stay nice and comfy, which would minimize and possible complaining.

I'll have to give this a try as well. #3 CHT is my biggest problem child on climb out.

I've had a few flights now where my EDM-830 will show 0.0 for FF at T/O. It came back to life a few times mid flight but usually it doesn't come back until the next flight. I had my mechanic recheck all the connections and he said everything looks good. Have any of you experienced this before? Aside from a bad transducer, all I can think is a bad connection.

Yep, I fully expect to see ads as a non-paying member. I'm sure these ads are not intended to completely disable our phones to a point where the browser has to be closed completely just to get back to the site. I hope you guys find the solution soon.

I bought mine off eBay as well. Now I wish I could trade it in for one of these.
