Grease for an annual. Which type?
MB65E replied to isaacpr7's topic in Vintage Mooneys (pre-J models)
Check the prop hub itself and logs for a service sticker. A lot of newer prop overhauls are using Aeroshell 5... Currently, On the wheel bearings I've been using synthetic mobil SHC-100. Most larger aircraft wheels are using this now so I'm set up in the shop with it. I've uses Aeroshell 5 for the wheel bearings in the past. Lasar has the premix Aeroshell 7 and molybdenum for the gear actuator if your electric. -Matt -
How much torque on nose gear tire?
MB65E replied to isaacpr7's topic in Vintage Mooneys (pre-J models)
Was the grease replaced in the bearings? With fresh grease, take it down till it compresses all the grease. (Sounds like you have) , then back it off untill it spins freely. There should not be any bearing play felt with a left and right twist of the wheel. I have never seen a final torque on a 500x5 wheel. Jet wheels are usually torqued initially pretty high, then have a final torque of about half of what the initial was. On a photo flight once I noticed a wheel on a Pitts spinning in flight, I checked it out later and it was too loose. Ended up making a small spacer to get the cotter pin to line up. Did you miss a spacer on install? That's all I've got, I don't think Mooney gave too much thought to wheel maintenance. It was the similar 500x5 wheel used since the 30's. -Matt -
If it's a first run cylinder I would have it repaired/overhauled vs buying or exchanging...

Good Question! I think I used 2 on each. I want to say the gasket/overhaul kit I think has enough for two on each tube. I don't think 1 has enough spring pressure to stay put. If your putting it back together today and need an answer, 2 can't hurt... -Matt

I think the halogen par36 lamps last longer than the PAR46 lamps. I couldn't get the Par46 lamps to last on the CJ I maintain longer than 75hrs. I'd leave them alone if your having good luck with them! Where are your lights located? I sware I was changing lights in an M20M (wing mounted hard to get to) every oil change. Just all depends on how much you like changing bulbs. I bet the 2 halogens are pretty bright!! I've been happy with AeroLED, Whelen, and Teldyne. Just depends on the purpose and price point. Poorly typed/spelled from my IPhone. -Matt

They just click in place of the old 90° units. And the lightbulb is like any other. With The nice satin black paint the housings come in, you will find your self touching up other things in that area too. - Matt

Welcome Man!! I wouldn't rule out a nice C. The Angle valve cylinders are expensive, But I love my little E! There are some really ratty ones out there so be careful! Even if your an IA, try to get some feed back on the potential aircraft from another peer. As a tech being emotionally envolved has its challenges. Make sure you buy a round trip airline ticket when you go look at these old airplanes. Also, this time of the year, arrange a preheated hangar for the inspection. Lol. Southwest now flys direct to Dallas... Just saying... But with our youngest one turning 2 the cost to fly the 4 of us in the Mooney looks even better! Enjoy the hunt! -Matt

Thanks Craig!!!! Hope the funds are enough to keep the I.V. flowing. -Matt

I bought them about 3 years ago from the owner directly! Wanted them in blue, but settled for red. I did a little digging and the Short Wing Piper guys have these available. I think they are te same as what the guy was selling a few years ago. http://www.shortwingpiperclub.org/shop/aircraft-maintenance-parts/cabin-mounted-shoulder-lights/ I really like mine!! -Matt

I lock mine... Even shut down once because I forgot to lock it. -Matt

Spray the rack and back shell down with DEOXIT! Black aresol can with some red trim. ( @Radio shack) it's better than the standard contact cleaner. It leaves a conductive film. Longer term upgrading to a used Kx-155 (1k AMU??) from some one who just upgraded to GTN's and wants to unload it. Might try to find another used narcco, but they could all be dead horses by now! Cheers!! -Matt

Brian is Awesome!! The film will be even better!! -Matt More info on the film can be found here: http://allthingsaero.com/airlines/events/article-national-geographic-to-distribute-new-aviation-film

I'd just do a normal take off and let it accelerate a bit longer than normal. I wouldn't reccomend a static take off with a left cross wind!! That got my attention in the "E" had a gust from the left that weathered vained me towards the bushes. I was playing with the wind and seeing how quick I could get off... I had to reduce power to keep it over the runway, the rudder was already on the floor. Do the W&B, run the TO numbers, check Elevation, be smart, and Enjoy the airplane! -Matt

Try some cleaner wax first. 3m makes it, black bottle autozone... If that is to light an auto body wholesaler will have a 3m polish called Perfect-It. Morhers Mag wheel Polish will work too-autozone small white can red lable, screw on lid. Also hopefully the seaplane guy can find some elbowgrese. -Matt

LED Recognition Lights--Are you interested?
MB65E replied to Parker_Woodruff's topic in Modern Mooney Discussion
Ok, so a flat wing tip guy here dreaming of new wing tips etc.... I have not had a single larger Maglight LED flashlight ever fail, you can focus the lense, replacments are plentiful, shines across the hangar in daylight, and it works on 3 d-cell batteries... Just sayin!! I'm surprised no one has done this yet... -Matt -

Good luck. The 201 spinner is available but looks silly (on a C) and costs a Ton. In the Type certificate, there are several spinners listed, you could run anyone of them with just a logbook entry. Check W&B too. I ran into an issue with mine cracking too. I found a deal on eBay, but ran into a front bulkhead issue with fit. Hartzell "says" they never manufactured the front bulkhead spinner, however I think Globe made them for hartzell under license. The front bulkhead I felt was necessary due to the moment of the larger spinner. The offset of the front bulkhead is diffrent on the straight -1 hartzell hub vs the -1BF hub we have on the Moonies. Piper made a fiberglass spinner for the Arrow, that would be great if somebody could manufacture one... The store bought solution is a 2.5k hartzell 201 spinner... Ugg!! -Matt

Ah... Yes, flying dogs in Citations. Round trip? Lol. -Matt

All true! I was just hoping to knock rust of the cam with the mineral oil... Lol. -Matt

It actually lessens the friction on the rings and lengthens the brake in time. Per Several engine builders and Cam guard directly. I just finally put cam guard in after 65hrs... -Matt

Oil Change Time - How important to heat oil before draining?
MB65E replied to redraider's topic in General Mooney Talk
On the cold oil change, dump the oil wait a day with the valve open, then flush with a clean quart untill clear oil can be seen thru the drain. Although, a quart of avgas is cheaper than a quart of oil. All in all, both do the same. Samples... Hot oil, let it drain for a few seconds before the sample is taken. -Matt -
Garmin and Aspen should now pay you royalties! Or at least MS tax on this eye candy! Looks awesome!! -Matt

Awe man!!! It would have come up fine even in the 50/80 range. As for the brake in Aeroshell 100 mineral oil, no additive. High power. 5 hours should be enough at high power. I sometimes switch back to mineral oil on an engine that might sit for 6 months or so. -Matt
