  1. It is Richard http://www.orlandosentinel.com/news/breaking-news/os-richard-simile-plane-crash-mooney-20150420-story.html
  2. Then all you do is press that circle with he targeting arrows in it on the top right of the screen. It will center every time.
  3. Your best STOL kid on a J model is a 3 bladed prop. VG just slow you down because they create drag (the lift that's created to prevent boundary layer separation also creates drag). Yes, you can fly slower before you get boundary layer separation... but you are doing it at a larger cost of a slower cruise speed. Do you have any obstacles on the departure or arrival or can you be in ground effect before you get to the pavement? This helps your takeoff which you can take off and get into ground effect like on a soft field takeoff.
  4. How often do you drain the gascolator and take a fuel sample first flight of the day? You got to be tall to do it all yourself and not poor it on the ramp but it's possible. Not doing this can cause it to build then just get junk in your screen. But I'm more inclined to believe you have lost your engine driven fuel pump. The engine driven fuel pump is less pressure than the aux pump (not the high press pump) and if you had crud, it won't allow fuel past it even in an aus fuel pump pressure. Sorry, this is going to be expensive if it's out of an engine accessory warranty.
  5. No but you can always press the button that centers on your current location again. Do you show your location on your flight(i.e. does your iPad have an internal GPS, do you use stratus or some other kind of external GPS)? Its the circle with the target over it in the top right corner.
  6. http://blog.foreflight.com/2015/04/10/foreflight-for-apple-watch-coming-soon/ The announcement is finally out. It does quite a bit but you must have an iPhone to get adsb weather updates on it.
  7. Well, you definitely seem the perfect guy to get into a partnership with in an Ovation. I'm trying to form one around JYO. The long and the short of it is that 150k isn't enough for you to afford a known icing airplane. https://www.caviceprotection.com/products-services/ice-protection-systems/mooney-fiki Cav says you can have a FIKI K, M, R, S, and TN I've been searching for quite sometime for a known icing K model but the only ones I find are the R models and they are all around 235k for the non G-1000. Being that I fly in and out of this area year round, known icing in the R has been a 100% success rate + or - 1 day or so. I've climbed to 17k and ridden a great tail wind above a smaller frontal system getting 270+ knots over the ground. I'd honestly find someone to do a time share in your plane where when it's not being used, they can use it. Monthly cost and hourly cost if you wanted to try and swing it. Otherwise, the best aircraft for this mission really is the R model. If you want any other stories on the year round flying I've done in it, let me know.
  8. Going to the ceiling of any Mooney, having 3 adults probably won't make it there. Have you done the weight and ballance yet on it? Don't take off max gross and think it will make it up there without burning off a lot of fuel first. Why don't you kick the 3rd person to the curb and go enjoy it with just 2? You will definitely need the weight to invest in fuel to have to go up there.
  9. Are you asking if the GPS can be used with ADS-B and it auto corrected to ABS? The only ABS acronym I can think of is American Bonanza Society. The GPS is not WAAS, it is only the basic 430 and no, it will not meet the WAAS requirements for ADS-B.
  10. On a cylinder overhaul, you should be doing a oil change at 25 hours and if everything is good on the engine and oil, then taking it off mineral oil is ok. I'm trying to follow here... Your cylinder replacement was aeroshell 100 (mineral oil)? Then at the annual, did they take change the oil (should be around 25 hours)? If they find no problems in the oil, filter, and cylinder leaking, then they usually take it off aeroshell 100 (mineral oil). Are you saying though that you always use aeroshell 100 which is the mineral oil? I didn't know people usually operated with mineral oil.
  11. Did you replace the oil type recently with mineral oil do to a cylinder change? Or are you mixing oil types.
  12. The tipping process in Mexico is too widespread and you seem to come from money just because you have an airplane. I would never fly to Mexico.
  13. Hey. FSS here doing International Flight Plans. All flight plans have to be ICAO both ways. If you file on fltplan.com, they will screw up your flight plan and if it files domestic, it is automatically thrown out by all ATC systems involved. DUATS flight plans will not be accepted coming back into the USA but flight plans to Mexico can be accepted but if this is your first attempt, DON'T DO IT YOURSELF! Your flight plan will get rejected by the computer and you will NOT receive an e-mail about flight plan issues from fltplan.com or duats. Call and get it through FSS on the USA side. There is a different number for international briefings and flight plans. I included a youtube video for using Lockheed Martins Pilot Portal which is soon to replace DUATS. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oquTAjzekww&index=6&list=PLqa9423Jd9MqIQ_zGBa10E3dETHO_hroH When airborne, you NEVER call to get a clearance through flight service. You have to call center or approach ONLY when you are in the air. Why don't you pick up your IFR clearance in Mexico? You need to know the EET times which are the boundary crossing times for Mexico's FIR and USA FIR. This is time from departure so figure it out. You have to be within 15 minutes. You cannot just file domestic IFR in the United States though and pick it up. The center will not allow you in the country. If they do, you will get a phone number when you land. FOR GOD SAKES, CALL FSS and ask questions before you file the real flight plan. You pay for it in your taxes. Why not use it? Below is a link for all International AFSS & Customs phone numbers. https://www.1800wxbrief.com/afss/#!/phone-numbers-quick-steps
  14. This is a common topic at MAPA safety seminars, it's usually dirt in the tracks. Take a look and see what's under there and you can usually clean it out yourself but you got to get a drill bit in your hand and start twisting it out.
  15. This is why I teach to listen to 121.5 always. If you loose coms, FSS, ATC, and even airborne aircraft will try and get you on that frequency to give you the new frequency. I know it can get annoying at times with all the guard banter going on. The flavor of this week is "Work Work Work Contract Work Work Approaches." If you haven't seen Living the Dream, here is your chance. A lot of pilots are quoting this on guard.
  16. Redbird has made the model for the Acclaim TN. Mooney now has 2 or 3 of these sims. I have a feeling Redbird in HYI can turn one of these on for you and have it set up as well.
  17. No, it is not possible on the G1000 to change the fuel tank size number. The reason why it wont indicate above that is because the fuel gauges don't sense above that level on the G1000. 44.5 is the most it will show even on the Moritz gauges on the DX Model.
  18. So I was actually there landing in a M20J... HAH, totally forgot that was today.
  19. Started in a D, went to a B, then K, J, and R. Ovation is by far the best!
  20. Not a problem at all. Just keep in mind if you start to look at ovation 2s, only consider a 3 bladed prop.
  21. At what altitude? What are your approach end/ departure end obstruction heights?
  22. I won't be going this week. Have to wait till next week.
  23. Yes. I have to pick up my plane but still waiting on the transponder to get back from Garmin.
  24. Sure. Tell us about yourself. What is your hull value going to be of the aircraft? What aircraft do you want? Are you a student, recreational, private pilot? What is your high performance time? How much do you fly a year?
