Agree!! This works for me too with a black iPad mini. Keep an air vent on it and problem goes away. Only required when the sun is directly on the iPad. Only happens rarely but when it does some air circulation fixes the problem.

For routine navigation I see no problem if you have a current database. Just don't try to shoot a GPS approach. I have an approved IFR GPS, but also have a panel mounted 496 as well as the iPad with stratus. I routinely use all three and have no issues trusting any of them for routine navigation. In fact, I have loaded a GPS approach in the 496 to see if it could get me down in an emergency and it tracks spot on with my legal IFR GPS (in case of a complete electrical failure the 496 would still work). That being said, they are not the same in other ways that matter. The 496 is not doing a RAIM check and other things can go wrong, so again, don't use your portable to shoot an approach but to navigate to a waypoint I see no problem. tips for flushing hydraulic system?
Hector replied to zerobearing2's topic in Vintage Mooneys (pre-J models)
Yes, works exactly the same way on pre-J. I do it every annual using a garden sprayer purchased from Home Depot connected to the brake caliper with clear tubing. Sent from my iPad using Tapatalk HD -
How high can you take a M20C?
Hector replied to Oscar Avalle's topic in Vintage Mooneys (pre-J models)
When I fly above 9000 I notice that I always get sleepy. In fact, once while cruising at 10.5K I took a little nap (I was with me and myself). It was less than 5 minutes but it scared the %#€£ out of me. Now, nothing above 8500 without O2 Sent from my iPad using Tapatalk HD -
Salt of the Earth - Yet another Hangar vs tie-down question
Hector replied to Robert C.'s topic in General Mooney Talk
Almost $800 for a communal hangar only two miles from the ocean? Not what I would choose. I would take the airport 20 miles inland with a more reasonably priced T-hangar. At least the T-hangar will give you a lot more options for performing owner maintenance to offset some of the cost of the hangar. I do owner assisted annuals which in my case means I do nearly all of it in my hangar. I'm 20 miles inland as well in Florida and my Mooney has no corrosion issues at all. It is kept in my T-hangar and gets a full corrosion-x treatment every two years (which I also do myself). I will say that my hangar is only $250 a month so it's really a no-brainer. I figure the $3K a year I spent is easily offset by the savings in environmental damage (corrosion, paint, acrylic surfaces) and all the owner maintenance that would be nearly impossible to do without my own hangar. I think there will be more affordable solutions in the next couple of years specially if you are mostly concerned with ADS-B out. I have another post here on a transponder with ES and built-in WAAS GPS from Appareo (the same guys who make the Stratus receiver) due out next year. I think there are a couple of other folks working on similar all-in-one box solutions. I also do not want to wait till the last minute, but I will wait 2 or 3 and see how things develop Sent from my iPad using Tapatalk HD

Did not do a side-by-side comparison with the Bose A20. I do like the Bose headsets too but someone else will need to chime in on that. Sent from my iPad using Tapatalk HD

Alright, since everyone is posting about their flying vacation here is mine. Flew to a Marathon Key for two weeks of fishing. Requested and got direct from KCRG to KMTH. Beautiful flight in the early morning. Dolphin fishing was incredible. Kids look forward to this every year. Left the Keys last Friday then flew (commercial) to Oshkosh for a few days. Unfortunately, now I have to pay the bills so it's back to work!! Sent from my iPad using Tapatalk HD

I got to try the PFX vs the Zulu 2 size-by-side yesterday at Oshkosh. I own a Zulu 2 and quite frankly find it to be the most comfortable headset I have ever owned. I really did not expect the PFX to be any better. It was better. After the PFX completed its initial setup to map my ear canal, the noise canceling was better than the Zulu 2 without question. The headset is also about 1.5 oz lighter than the Zulu 2 and felt just as comfortable. That behind said, I'm not about to spend $1100 to replace my Zulu 2. It was not that much better, but if I was going to buy a new headset I would probably get the PFX over the Zulu 2 at the current price difference of a couple hundred. Appareo/Stratus New ADS-B out Transponder
Hector replied to Hector's topic in Avionics/Panel Discussion
I think the point is that their transponder has a built-in WAAS GPS that will get its signal from a permanently installed GPS antenna. Not sure how this is different than any other TSOd unit. If they are successful, and I don't see why they could not get it done, it becomes an all-in-one box. The stratus attachment is just to get your WIFI functionality and ADS-B in. -
Appareo/Stratus New ADS-B out Transponder
Hector replied to Hector's topic in Avionics/Panel Discussion
I guess we will see, however, in this case the portable (stratus receiver) is only receiving information from the transponder. It is a one-way transfer of data only, I guess no different than some folks have a Garmin 496 connected to a Garmin panel mounted GPS Sent from my iPad using Tapatalk HD -
Appareo/Stratus New ADS-B out Transponder
Hector replied to Hector's topic in Avionics/Panel Discussion
I do not. I saw their prototype unit at their booth here in Oshkosh. Sorry, should have taken a picture to post here. I was too tired and brain dead by the time I got to their booth. -
Appareo/Stratus New ADS-B out Transponder
Hector replied to Hector's topic in Avionics/Panel Discussion
Should have also mentioned that when the Stratus is connected to the transponder it will also receive power from the transponder so the battery in the Stratus will remain fully charged -
Interesting new product (2015 release) from the folks that make the Stratus receivers. This is an all-in-one transponder with extended squitter and built in WAAS GPS. Intended to be a direct replacement for your existing transponder. It will need to be connected to a GPS antenna but it may be attached to an existing WAAS antenna if you already have one. Makes you fully ADS-B out compliant with one box. The stratus will also attach to this transponder via a cable. Your stratus will then utilize the better GPS signal from the transponder and it will also use the transponder antenna for ADS-B in for better signal reception. This should give you a lot more options on where to place your stratus box since it will no longer need a GPS signal nor will it need to receive the weather info via its internal antenna. Anyway, I think this is just an example of potentially various options for ADS-B solutions that we are likely to see in the next couple of years. Price is expected to be comparable to existing transponders but they did not quote a price.

Interesting logic!! So the people that actually fired the missile that killed all those people are completely blameless? DONT THINK SO.

As I recall, repeated radio calls were made to the Iranian flight asking them to change flight path which they ignored or did not hear. I don't think the Russian backed separatist (or maybe even Russia military personnel) gave the Malaysians the courtesy of a warning.
-
I think it's becoming pretty obvious day by day who was responsible for this. Between the intercepted phone conversations between the separatist and Russian military, the flow of sophisticated weapons from Russian to the separatist and their use to shoot down Ukrainian aircraft, the location over which the aircraft was traveling, etc, etc. etc. Sent from my iPad using Tapatalk HD

Congrats. I own a 67C just up the road from you in Jacksonville, FL. It was well maintained and it has been a great airplane for me. Once you get flying come up here and I'll try to speed up your learning curve with regards to maintenance and what to look for. I do 95% or more of the maintenance including the annual inspections with my local A&P signing off what I do. It's in my nature to learn everything I can about what I fly and how to maintain it. In the mean time, there is a lot of info here in Mooneyspace and folks that know a lot more about Mooney's than I. Start reading and learning. Sent from my iPad using Tapatalk HD

Yeah, now that I have this working and seeing how well it works coupled to a GPS, I want to add the heading bug and then altitude hold. I guess I'll start looking at eBay for the required components. Sent from my iPad using Tapatalk HD

This post is mainly to acknowledge the folks at Brittain, specially Gerry, who do an outstanding job of supporting their customer. Since I purchased my bird a couple of years ago I've had problems with the Brittain A/P. Initially thought the Accutrack controller was at fault but Gerry tested it twice and could not duplicate the probelm. After some guidance from Gerry and some tips from Mike in this forum I finally traced the problem to the servo control valve. When the Mooney went in for annual two weeks ago I removed the servo control valve and returned it to Brittain. They replaced some electrical components and it now works beautifully!! Because Gerry had previously charged me to test the controller, he fixed the servo control valve at no cost under warranty!? This was totally unexpected. between the time Gerry spent on the phone with me and the actual repair of the servo control valve, I seriously doubt I justly compensated them for their effort. It is refreshing to still find a small company like this that actually cares about their customers and will go the extra mile to help them. The guys at Brittain are first class all the way. I guess the only way to get this level of support is to put the customer first before profit and there just aren't many businesses left that are willing to do that. Anyway, I guess the least I can do is tell other folks here about my experience with Brittain and I hope they stick around for while longer. Together with a couple of tips I got from Mike my Brittain A/P now follows the magenta line like its on rails!! Sent from my iPad using Tapatalk HD

Getting the IRF clearance on line / internet
Hector replied to MooneyBob's topic in General Mooney Talk
Here in north Florida the expected flight clearance I get in Foreflight nearly always matches what I get from the tower. In South Florida, however, I seem to do no better than 50/50. About half the time I get a different route than the expected clearance I receive from Foreflight. I guess the Miami Bravo causes a lot of last minute changes? Sent from my iPad using Tapatalk HD -
