FloridaMan Posted July 31, 2013 Report Posted July 31, 2013 I need to fly in to Charlotte tomorrow for a funeral. My family is driving in from the Raleigh area and will pick me up from the airport. I can rent a car if absolutely necessary (which, knowing how I am when dealing with my family for extended periods of time, may be very much necessary). Can you guys recommend an airport that may be en-route to Charlotte for my family, or one that's close to downtown that's reasonable? Girlfriend is coming along. I plan on visiting a friend in Baltimore at KMTN (it looks like this is no longer in the FRZ) and then continuing to somewhere in the NYC area. From the previous thread on landing in NYC, it looks like KFRG or KHPN are the choices for NYC. Quote
Hank Posted July 31, 2013 Report Posted July 31, 2013 I had good experience at Charlotte Executive, EQY, in Monroe. Good access to US 74 on the east side of town. Nice facility, caters to shiny jets but takes care of us, too. I opted for self serve fuel. Should have rental cars available if you need one. Hope your travel is smooth. Remember the 'E' in "I'M SAFE" is emotion and stay overnight if you need to. Quote
fantom Posted July 31, 2013 Report Posted July 31, 2013 KUZA Rock Hill- is the closest to downtown with very good services, but a bit pricey. Excellent airport. KLKR Lancaster County- further south and will keep you out of busy airspace. Also a very nice airport with reasonable fuel prices. KEQY Charlotte Exec- SE quadrant and very nice. Good luck, and sorry for your loss. Quote
PMcClure Posted July 31, 2013 Report Posted July 31, 2013 +1 on KEQY. I use it regularly and they treat me very well. SS gas is cheap too (they were OTS for some construction but still gave me SS price with FS!). Good approaches too and CLT approach is easy to deal with. Quote
Mooneymite Posted July 31, 2013 Report Posted July 31, 2013 I've used both JQF and EQY, both were fine, just depends whereyou're headed in the CLT area. However at both airports I got stung by cabs. Apparently it's open season on airplane people for the transportation folks. Have an iron-clad price worked out before you agree to ride with anyone. One cab company insisted the quoted fare was "per person" after we arrived! Quote
ChrisH Posted August 1, 2013 Report Posted August 1, 2013 clt is ga friendly. Fun to fly in with the big boys. Just have taxi-way diagram out and ready. Quote

You won't find better service anywhere in Charlotte than Wilson Air CLT - in and out of CLT is very easy and no ramp or landing fees if you buy a minimum amount of fuel... MTN is a great stop for fuel and is outside the FRZ. I've used both HPN and FRG in NYC. HPN is a bit busier, but in a nicer area and has cheaper fuel (use Panorama or Million Air). FRG has expensive fuel, but cheaper parking if you there long term and is closer to a train station. -Andrew Quote
DrBill Posted August 3, 2013 Report Posted August 3, 2013 Sorry for late post, I was at OSH. I'm from the area. The closest to the East is mine, Wilgrove, 8A6. Small and homey. Best local airport to SOUTH is EQY (Monroe). NorthEast is JQF (Concord) $25 landing fee and towered. SW would be ROCK Hill, Like Monroe, untowered and inexpensive, WEST, CLT Towered, Landing fee, expensive but CLOSE to public transportation. Let me know which one you used and your experience.... Thanks. BILL Quote

Thanks. BILL Bill, CLT does not charge landing fees. Wilson Air *may* charge a ramp fee if you don't take on a minimum amount of fuel (I think it's 10 gal) or are there multiple nights. I took on about 30 gal (at a reasonable price) and paid no other fees last time I was in there. -Andrew Quote
DrBill Posted August 7, 2013 Report Posted August 7, 2013 Thanks Andrew... THEY (Wilson Air) call it a landing fee. I've never paid either but I don't use Wilson Air. I was doing some work for the Carolinas Aviation Museum and would land and taxi right up to the museum. No charges. Nearby Concord (KJQF) is the same, use the FBO and they may hit you for $10-25 (don'r remember which). They just started it about 6 months ago. Monroe (KEQY) is still free and has decent gas prices.
