I am looking at using a yoke mounted RAM mount with an ipad mini on my 1964 M20E.

I have not yet tried it. Any experience with this?

Will I damage the yoke? The set-up is not that light and I don't want to damage/strain the yoke. Any experience with this?

Thanks,

Nick

I've been using one for about 5 months and I love it.  No noticeable problems with the yoke at all.  There are two or three different mounts for the iPad mini.  You want the one that leaves the headphone jack unobstructed in case you want to use that for music as well.  If that's not an issue then either one will work fine.

Also, I mount mine with the arm going under the yoke so the iPad mini sits a little lower and doesn't block the lower instruments like the HSI, in my case.

Here's a link to the mount I have.  Because I have a protective screen on my iPad I chose to leave it in the mount at all times and just unscrew the ball from the arm and carry my iPad in the mount always.  I then use it in my car with a RAM suction mount so I can listen to music, podcasts and Mike Busch webinars while I'm driving.  If you were to remove it from the mount on a regular basis the protective screen over the iPad will fray around the two corners.  That's the only downside I've noticed thus far.

I went out and purchased a Ipad mini because I was under the impression that my Ipad would be too big and block the instruments, I was wrong The Ipad mini was hard to see on a sunny day so I figured I would try my Ipad. That worked out great you just have to mount it sideways, at least in my 1968 M20F the sun was not so bad on the Ipad.

I tried out the RAM yoke mount today with a mini. I mounted it vertically, since that makes it easier to read approach plates. It seemed to work quite well. The only issue I saw, is that when pushing the throttle full forward, you cant turn the yoke. The screw fixture of the yoke mount (which sticks out to the left) gets caught in the HI adjustment. But then again I only go through these extreme movementes as part of the runup check. I guess if I came into a stall, I would have a similar problem, but then I dont want to be deflecting the ailerons ;-)

Have others experienced this problem? Is there a better way to mount the RAM?

I got to see a picture of this. The RAM mounts can mount left or right adjustment screw. The bottom attachment screw to hold it to the yoke is fixed underneath. You have a picture of what you are talking about?

This is the pic I took today. It is difficult to see, but the screw is to the left and is fairly long.

I bought the basic Ipad Mini mount but then bought a double ball and additional "leg"  It gives a lot more flexibility in positioning.

Here is the pic.

I see the problem. There are two different RAM yoke mounts. One that extends to the side (like your's) and one that goes vertical. I am going out to the airport later and will take a picture of both of them.

Ok Mike -- you gotta explain the big clamp!

LOL - I was putting the yoke cover on the same time I took the picture... that step on the top required a little bit of stickum for the leather to lay right - the clamps were just there to hold it till it set....

Hi Guys.. Looks like I might be back in to Mooney ownership after a 10 year hiatus with Beech...  Do you have any problems with screen glare impeding the view of the iPad while flying?

I am considering a Garmin 796, but would prefer to use Garmin Pilot App and my iPad for starters..

Regards

Mike

Yes.

Here is the picture of the yoke clamp. I thought there were two different types, but it looks like ball is just oriented to the side to allow for the screw to go in a vertical orientation.post-9886-0-40060000-1370379687_thumb.jp

Hi, Mike, and welcome back! I've been flying with an iPad in my lap for a couple of years now, first with an iPad 1 and now with an iPad 3. Glare definitely is an issue on bright days when direct sunlight is on the screen, but it has always been manageable. And with the iPad on my lap it is always easy enough to reposition for better viewing. I wouldn't expect much difference between a Mooney and a Beech in this regard, but unfortunately that is just speculation on my part. Hopefully others will chime in with their experience.

It is good to have you here with

Thanks Jim...

So I think you answered my next question. I take it you do not use a mount or the ipad. You just keep it in your lap?

Correct. That is what I do, but others here mount theirs. At first I thought that I would mount mine as well, but ultimately I decided that I like it best loose in my lap without external power. With brightness set at 50 percent, battery life has yet to be an issue, but I do keep a USB cigarette lighter adaptor and power cord on board, just in case.

FWIW, though, for the past few months I have also been running Xavion on an externally powered and RAM-mounted iPhone. With the brightness turned all the way up and the screen directly facing me, glare has always been manageable on this (mounted) iDevice as well.

Jim

Jim - I don't have an iPhone, just an iPad2. Is that phone really big enough to see well on? What are the limitations due to the smaller screen size? Just curious because I have been wanting to get an iPhone, but haven't committed to it yet.

Thanks - Bill
