skyking1 Posted February 18, 2013 Report Posted February 18, 2013 I am thinking of trading in my garmin 530w on a gtn 750. Any thoughts good or bad? Quote
Oscar Avalle Posted February 18, 2013 Report Posted February 18, 2013 Really great idea. I exchanged my 430 for a 750 and I love it. http://mooneyspace.com/gallery/image/33744-my-panel-in-action/ 1 Quote
carusoam Posted February 19, 2013 Report Posted February 19, 2013 The only thing reported bad that stands out is the cost. Primarily the cost of install like it is a completely new install, not the hoped for slide in replacement. Best regards, -a- Quote
Piloto Posted February 19, 2013 Report Posted February 19, 2013 You are right about the cost and install. Due to the larger size it will require relocating some of the avionics. The 750 has some nice features but if you already have the GNS 530W the added cost may not justify the added features. I got a 560 for $1500 and got some of the features the 750 has like taxiway maps, airways, weather and touch screen. And as a backup in case of a power failure. Having the 560 on the yoke gives you good support for touch screen entry and minimum visual scan required. José Quote
Bennett Posted February 19, 2013 Report Posted February 19, 2013 I like the GTN 650/750/Aera796 primarily for the touch screens, shallow menus, and their use of similar icons. The GTN 750 can add a remote audio panel and one of two remote transponders, plus the new GDL-88 ADS-B in/out with Relative Traffic. Not at all inexpensive, but highly useful, and using the remotes saves a good deal of panel space. The 430W, and 530W have been, and are, fine boxes, and the prices have fallen recently because of the GTN series, and perhaps because a great deal of the functionality of the GTN series (as supplemental information, and moving maps on flight plans) is available on iPads, and iPad Minis, via programs like Foreflight and Garmin Pilot. A few years ago I would have thought that having the rather simple KAP 150 autopilot following a complex flight plan, with holds, and approaches (in my case with GPSS steering via an Icarus SAM) would be impossible, yet the GTN 750 does all of this and more, and in my opinion, in a much simpler manner than the 530. A suggestion: The 530 (for coupling to an autopilot), plus an Aera 796 with XM weather mounted in an Airgizmo panel mount, and perhaps a yoke mounted iPad Mini running Foreflight would provide a great deal of information at "reasonable" expense. 1 Quote
Bob_Belville Posted February 20, 2013 Report Posted February 20, 2013 The 750/Aspen in conjunction with an autopilot, I have a STEC50, is really sweet. The touch screen is very intuitive, making flight plan changes quick and easy including finding unfamiliar fixes. I departed KPDK Monday IFR. I had filed dir KMRN but my clearance was hdg 090, vectors AHN, V20 ELW, DIR SPA, Dir ATC, 3000, expect 9000 in 10 minutes. I knew that I would not have to do all that and that at some point departure control would allow me to head to ELW and probably DIR SPA or even KMRN. Sure enough, traffic permitted ATC to ask for on course hdg before I got to AHN and cleared me dir home. Making the several changes to the FLT PLN was a piece of cake with the 750. All the while the GPSS was keeping up with the new hdgs. The more I fly it the more I like it! Quote
