M20E-1964 Posted September 24, 2012 Report Posted September 24, 2012 Well, it's time for a new pitot tube cover. Sportys sells 2 sizes: Cessna Molded Cover .75 dia Cirrus Pitot Cover .625 dia Dumb questions- which one fits? Quote
FlyTester Posted September 24, 2012 Report Posted September 24, 2012 Sorry, I prefer PetSmart over Sporty's. A couple of bucks gets me a clucky or quacky squeaky toy. Simply remove the whistle from the toy's posterior and presto, you have a pitot cover! (shown is one I made for a student's 172) Quote
Steve65E-NC Posted September 24, 2012 Report Posted September 24, 2012 I use an old tennis ball with a small x cut. I took an 18"x1.5" ribbon of sunbrella fabric, bright orange, and put it in a second small cut 90 degrees away from first. Very visible. This fabric holds it's color. The fabric was left over from a tail opening bra that you can see in my gallery (if it all transferred over). Quote
Hank Posted September 24, 2012 Report Posted September 24, 2012 Neither. I use this one: http://www.sportys.com/PilotShop/product/16537 Just be sure to pull it tight; if the fit is sloppy when you attach the velcro strap, strong winds will blow if off. Lost mine that way when parked near tornadoes [twice!]. 1 Quote
jetdriven Posted September 24, 2012 Report Posted September 24, 2012 We use the tennis ball with a hole punched in it to fit on the pitot tube and a slit cut from the hole to prevent pressure from blowing up the airspeed indicator. Quote

Hank Posted September 24, 2012 Report Posted September 24, 2012 Yep! I was at Tornado-and-Fun last year. The Cessna on my right wingtip was turned around and inverted on top of the Bonanza by his right wingtip. Things could very easily gone differently for many of us. A month later, at my brother's wedding, the tornado was across the county. Found out by nearly losing a third one that you can pull it nice and snug and it stays on, for instance when that nice front blew through the weekend after Labor Day, and I was tied down outside. Still have that pitot cover! Quote

M20E-1964 Posted September 25, 2012 Author Report Posted September 25, 2012 I think I have to pass on the rubber chicken!!!! Quote
scottfromiowa Posted September 28, 2012 Report Posted September 28, 2012 That is kind of a personal question... Mine was one of the first "things" I bought with the plane. The streamer is frayed, but the velcro still holds it on when the going gets tough. I have thought it was lost a couple times...and I actually had regret. Kind of like an old broken in tennis shoe. Always glad to see it. Quote
Ned Gravel Posted September 28, 2012 Report Posted September 28, 2012 This is mine but with a fluorescent yellow tag. http://www.sportys.com/PilotShop/product/9649 Quote
duke Posted January 2, 2013 Report Posted January 2, 2013 I like flytesters chicken. Must go shopping and try to find an eagle. Â the way it is mounted should make it scream!! Quote
AmigOne Posted January 2, 2013 Report Posted January 2, 2013 I have the molded plastic cover, the drawback in my opinion, easier to go in than to go out. Â Â Quote
N201MKTurbo Posted January 2, 2013 Report Posted January 2, 2013 I can see using a rubber chicken on a Cessna, but on a Mooney???? Quote
jetdriven Posted January 4, 2013 Report Posted January 4, 2013 The rubber chicken is appropriate for a Mooney. It is also appropriate for a Cessna if it is embedded in the trailing edge of the wing or rudder. 1 Quote
