Hello again,

I have a 1983 M20K that did not come with the wing tip recog lights. Mooney at one point offered a kit to install these on my M20K, when I reached out to Mooney they said the only reason they couldn't sell me the kit is because they no longer have the "RECOG" rocker switch. Trying to see if anyone has installed these in their bird before. Im installing new WAT LED strobes and would like to see about doing the recogs at the same time.

You don't need to buy them from Mooney.  I put in Whelen Recognition lights back in the 90s and a few years ago upgraded to the LED bulb.

You probably want to talk to Gallagher Aviation @OSUAV8TER here and see what he can do for you.

Look for the switch on the used market. Might be tricky finding a 12V one. I believe you will need the plastic covers that sit behind the recog lights and their retaining clips, but if you opt for LED lights you could have the wires run if they aren't already there.

I have the WAT LEDs already in my possession but my bird has never had recogs installed. Trying to see what’s needed to mount them in the wing tips

Oh one of my customers did this retrofit but it was a custom job. So it can be done. Unfortunately I don't have more detail other than it can be done.

1. Do you have a parts catalogue that shows what parts are needed?

2. Can you get drawings of those parts from Mooney?

It might just be easier to buy the newest version of the Aveo wingtips instead of retrofitting or custom fabricating something.

EDIT:  there was a thread here last year or so with a 2nd generation Aveo tip that had forward-facing recognition lights and aft position lights.  I don't see it on their website right now so maybe it is not yet in production.

You might want to take a look inside the wingtips.    My Eagle has the wiring for them, just not hooked up.   Same with the Overhead panel the wire is there, but a blank is put over the switch hole.

If it was an option from the factory, then the wires might already be in the wings.  Take the clear lens off and then the running/strobe.   Don't drop the glass lenses.   Look for extra wires.

As far as mounting an LED, There is a black plastic spacer that covers the aluminum bracket that the running lights/strobes are attached to.    Depending on how fancy you want to be for the recognition lights a wood screw thread.  or a rivinut, or a pop rivet could server to hold the recognition lights.

If it was not pre wired running a wire through the wing has been done before.   The fiberglass chaser rods help.

Quick question. I know the reorg lights have a square mounting flange at the back. Do you happen to know the size of that square?

They weren't an option back in '83. I believe they showed up '86 and on with the 252? or maybe '89 an on starting with the TLS.

Trivial to add them. Just need to cut out the black plastic in front of the strobe/position light assembly. they just sit there, partially enclosed by the plastic, not really mounted to anything.
If your plastic molding there is not really conducive to re-using for this, i.e. too cracked and brittle, replacing them with J model plastic and cutting the needed opening results in a cleaner install than using the K model plastic ones IMO.

That was only for the original sylvania projector halogen bulbs - it fit a square plastic socket used on the halogen. It’s not used on the LED lights because there is no similar socket.

@TravelingIA98 Sorry for the rotation, I'm not sure why it does that. IMG_4972.jpeg.a4d13f66cdd3ac7da5228aeeca21da51.jpeg

Looking at the pictures posted of the LED lights i may be miss-remembering the use of the soft aluminum bracket to mount the whelen LED lights since it looks like they replicated the same socket shape used on the original sylvania projector lights.

If anyone is still interested this was the final product after a day of fabricating and painting. A little before, during, and after. Now I have a spot for the recog lights when I’m ready to install.

:huh:Are you giving these away?  They all say “Your price =$0”

You have to select an option and if you don't, it will say $0. There is an option for the left, right, or both wingtip lenses. Here is a highlighted screen shot on one of the Mooney wingtip lens products.

Do you happen to know where I could find a few of those clips?
