Would a separate G3X Touch Forum be useful?

19 members have voted

  1. 1. Do you have or are you planning to have a G3X Touch installed? (really only interested in YES answers to get a count)

  2. 2. Would you like to see a separate G3X Touch Forum section to consolidate G3X knowledge?

Are there enough of us with the G3X installed (or about to be installed) to warrant a separate G3X Touch forum to compile and build a consolidated knowledge base? There's lots of good practical information here about installation, operation and issues/troubleshooting but it can be hard to find, especially if you're looking for something specific.

Anyone else interested? Poll to follow.

EDIT: ok, so the system put the poll first :)

I have a G3X Touch and as much as I would love to have a consolidated knowledge base, I’m kind of indifferent about whether to have a dedicated forum. Many of the topics we discuss on Garmin avionics can apply to a variety of installed equipment.

What would the dedicated forum give us that the search bar doesn't work?

My thought is it could contain the more useful specific G3X information and it would eliminate the need to sort through extraneous mentions that come up when you search for G3X or some combination with G3X using the search function.

I voted yes to a forum, but really I am ambiguous about having a separate section.

We don't have SO many posts that it is hard to find things.

I'd love instruction to actually get a checklist .ace file to be recognized by the G3x. Creating the file and copying it to the root directory does not work.

Garmin is like a iPhone, their logic is pretty much the same throughout the line of products.

I just used the Garmin Checklist Editor https://www8.garmin.com/support/download_details.jsp?id=5075. It's a little clunky, but it works fine after you get used to it. Then, I put the resulting .ace file in the root directory of the SD card and it worked.

G3X Touch Checklist Basics using an iPad.pdf

EDIT: In helping @Max Clark with some checklist troubleshooting we discovered that the web based EFIS Editor https://rdamazio.github.io/efis-editor/ has a feature that lets you tag checklist groupings as Normal, Abnormal, or Emergency. That feature doesn't exist in the other editors, particularly the Garmin editor, and may be what's causing the issues folks are having if they've used the tagging feature.

@Oscar Avalle, what editor did you use to build your checklists?

EDIT #2: I posted this under it's own topic but repeating it here to keep the checklist troubleshooting info together.

If you're having problems with getting your checklist to display on the G3X, look at your .ace file in the Garmin Checklist Editor and make sure you didn't create any "empty checklists". You have to have at least one checklist step under each checklist header or the G3X will give you a "No valid checklist file present", or something like that, on the checklist page, and it won't display any checklists at all. For instance, if you created a Ground Emergencies group and created an Engine Fire checklist header in that group, you have to enter at least one step under the Engine Fire header.

It may be an easier first step for some folks to use the Ace-Editor app on an iPad or Mac to review their checklist file to look for an empty checklist. The app will open the checklist file, but as you page through the checklists the app will crash if you come upon an empty checklist. You'll still need to use the PC based Garmin Checklist Editor or the web based EFIS Editor at https://rdamazio.github.io/efis-editor/ to fix the file by either deleting the empty checklist header or adding a place-holder step to the empty checklist.

Hopefully that's the solution for the folks having issues.

i am probably the one dissenter in the need for a G3X specific forum. But it really doesn’t affect how I follow post here. I virtually never browse forums but follow new activity scrolling till i find something of interest and i probably won’t even note what forum it’s in.
But i think we already have way too many forums.
For example we added a Bravo forum some time ago and as expected only about 20% of the content was Bravo specific topics. For those people that do browse by forums, doesn’t the logic backfire when a bravo owner asks about something like what kind of tires or tubes to run if only people interested in Bravos will review it?

Personally following the intended logic here my vote would be for Garmin avionics and Avidyne avionics if we really need that. i predicts the majority of G3x won’t be specific to the G3x at all but will focus on GTN’s, GFC-500, and G5’s, or even VNAV etc and when so the logic backfires if all the other users with the otherwise same equipment don’t see it.

I also don’t get keeping the repository of info in one place. Does anyone search for anything in MooneySpace forums using Mooneyspace search? Google is the only way i search because it’s the only way that works decently.

But again this won’t be a hindrance to me either and as a Tapatalk user i can’t participate in polls either. Which is an acceptable compromise to make for me.

I don't post general questions like that in the Bravo forum. I DO find good Bravo-specific info there though, and it's where I post any useful Bravo-specific info I come across. But the separate forum is only as useful as people are disciplined about what they post where. Most people aren't that disciplined about it, nor do I expect them to be. Tapa Talk pretty much trashed that idea with the way it works.

I started this thread to gauge interest. If there had been even 100 people interested it may have been a reasonable thing to request. But an order of magnitude less than that makes it a non-starter.

Nature of the beast -- everyone wants to be a member of an exclusive club.  I look at every topic and, like you, have no clue what "forum" they came from.  For me, the "forum" is MooneySpace.com.

Is this  true electric checklist or just a onscreen depiction of a paper checklist?

As in you get low voltage, does the system  automatically bring up the low voltage checklist and mark items done it can see done?

Or is this just a scroll and click depiction of your paper checklist?

None of the Garmin checklist implementations that I’m aware of are “smart checklists”. They are electronic presentations of the POH checklists or checklists built by the user.

Are there other manufacturers that have smart checklists for piston GA aircraft? I think that’s a feature confined to big iron, but I’d be happy to be wrong about that.

I’ve only used the smart type checklists  on some Boeing products, it was a improvement off the paper checklist.

However

I’ve flown turbine and piston factory Garmin and Honeywell planes that had the basic digital checklist on screen you could scroll through, but frankly a good half sheet front and back with nice thick lamination, was faster and easier

Yeah, I think it's a matter of what works best for you. I really wasn't a fan of the on-screen checklists until I used the one on the G3X. The previous electronic checklists were on my iPad/EFB or in one of my radios, like the GNS 430W. To me they felt cumbersome to get to and cumbersome to use, and really weren't an improvement over a checklist I could hold in my hand as you described.

But the G3X Touch is way different in that I can get to the checklist page with the easy muscle memory of two turns of my wrist (big twist clockwise, one click back counterclockwise), and I've tailored all but the emergency checklists to fit on a single page. I'm a "flow first - checklist confirm" guy and I don't necessarily physically tick off each item on every checklist as I read through them but I DO sequence to the next checklist I'll need as I complete each checklist. That way when I do my twist-click the next time I'm on the page I need for that phase of flight. I've really grown to like using it. It has centralized and simplified my work flow.

I played around a little bit with Miracheck. It’s kind of an interesting idea, where you have a digital presentation on your iPad but then there’s an audio callout using speech to text with a required “Check” audible response (which automatically ticks the check box on your tablet).

It’s not a “smart” checklist in the sense that it’s aware of the aircraft condition, but it’s a bit more like a crew workflow with the audio callouts and responses.

@Rick Junkin thanks again for helping me figure this all out. He really went above and beyond just to help a rando on the internet figure this out.

The EFIS Editor was nice to use but has a couple pretty big flaws.

1. It's missing validations that will prevent the .ace file from loading on the G3x. The G3x will just tell you "no valid checklist found", and not provide any helpful information beyond that. Opening the file in ACE Editor looked fine as well. Rick took the time to click through each and every checklist page to find errors. Again - cannot say enough thanks here.

2. It will let you / help you use fancy ASCII characters. For instance, it's pretty to have "70°" in the checklist file, but the G3x will not properly display the ° so it's a waste.

Another word of advice. The POH checklists have a lot of extra text and details in them. I copied most over to the .ace to load into the G3x, but when displayed on the split screen there isn't enough real estate to show. I'm going to drastically cut down on the note/caution text in the future.

I thought this at first and told Max about it but I was WRONG! The "º" character WILL display properly in an .ace checklist on the G3X. That's ASCII 248, or option-zero key combination on a Mac keyboard.
