jkenney Posted May 11, 2012 Report Posted May 11, 2012 I am getting an oil change done on my Ovation and the mechanic doing the work is recommending this oil filter. http://www.challengeraviation.com/newproducts.html It's pricey at $295 but supposedly allows for an increased interval between oil changes, better cooling, etc. He says he has them on his own aircraft and will share 7 years of oil analysis with me. Curious if anyone in the community has one of these on thier Mooney and what their experience has been. Thanks in advance Jim Quote
1964-M20E Posted May 11, 2012 Report Posted May 11, 2012 Seems like a good concept except. I’ve read the continued airworthiness directions. The replacement elements run $150 to $160 If you change your oil three times a year you can use a regular filter for 4 years before you break even. The element needs to be replaced every 5 years or 1250 hours (25 oil changes) The economics are most likely a wash maybe a little better if you do not have to replace the element before 5 years. So I guess the real question is this oil filter any better than what we are currently using? Quote
carusoam Posted May 12, 2012 Report Posted May 12, 2012 I stick with the mooney recommended parts and procedures for my Ovation. You would have to show me some significant data and savings to make that decision. You have an Ovation, why start reinventing the oil change? Best regards, -a- Quote
