Brian2034 Posted March 6, 2024 Report Posted March 6, 2024 Okay, I know Lasar sell the steering horn. My question is the horn something that can be repaired (bushings, bolts)? I've read somewhere there's shim washer's that can be used to tighten the side play and believe there's also bushings available?? Second question It looks like the newer model Mooney's have an upgraded steering horn will the newer horn fit the C models Quote
Brian2034 Posted March 6, 2024 Author Report Posted March 6, 2024 Also do anyone have a steering horn for sale? And while where at it, I have the dreaded dent in the tubing on the landing gear! Not a major dent but if one is available I may as well change it. Quote

If it’s the dent in the nose steering horn, then yes, definitely get that replaced as the tolerance is very small and the consequences are bad (collapsing nose gear). The last person I heard get one (for a J) was @PT20J. He got a new one from Mooney through an msc. I’m not so sure if lasar is still selling them or just ordering through mooney. I think they are the same for a c but obviously check that with the msc. Absent the dent, the slop can possibly be cleared with new bushings, bolts or heim joints. You need to jack up the airplane, lock the rudder pedals and then lay under the nosewheel and wiggle it. The exact source of the slop will be evident. Quote

LASAR may be able to repair the nose gear dent and update it if it doesn’t have the stops. They also may have an exchange unit. The big issue is sometimes they have exchange units and sometimes they will repair and sometimes they don’t/won’t. So you’ll have to call them to find out. They are also a good source for all the bushings, hardware etc. Quote
PT20J Posted March 7, 2024 Report Posted March 7, 2024 Let’s make sure we are talking about the same part. The steering horn is not the same as the gear leg (the latter being the part that gets dented by oversteering with a tug). The steering horn does have shims that can be adjusted to remove some play. LASAR no longer makes the PMA horn. They used to rebuild worn factory horns before they moved out of Lakeport, but I don’t know if they do that anymore or not. 1 Quote

Both, My gear leg is dented and the steering horn has play. So, I'm asking if there is a bushing kit available for the horn and also if the newer style horn would work on my 63C And secondly if anyone has a gear leg available for sale or my alternative checking with the local shop who does the certified aircraft welding repairs. PT20J Posted March 7, 2024 Report Posted March 7, 2024 The gear leg is heat treated so the repair is a little more complicated. I replaced one about a year ago and at that time Mooney had just made a lot of eight. This was for an M20J so you would have to check the part number to see if they are the same as yours. Frank Crawford at Mooney can verify part numbers and inform you of Mooney stock but cannot quote prices since each MSC sets its own markup (LASAR was not the best price when I ordered mine through another MSC). Mooney won't know what MSCs have in stock and so you will have to call around to see if anyone has one sitting in inventory. The gear legs come primed and ready to paint. 1 Quote

Thank you I'm sure Mooney or one of the MSC would have the parts $$$ but my first choice is used. I'm restoring a 1963 C and don't want to get to deep $$$ into it. Quote

Lasar once made a bushing kit for the nose truss that required that the truss be bored oversize and a busing pressed in. Not sure if they still make it. No point in buying it until you’ve determined the condition of the truss you’ll be using. Quote
