Mooney People,

In my Ovation ,I believe the upper SD card on the MFD can record flight data and at update time I have been putting NAV  updates on both upper cards. Perhaps this is wrong?

Can anyone review for me which databases should go on each of the four cards?  Seems to me that Garmin was never too clear about that. I have never been enough of a

computer geek to get it correct. If I could get this right , I could send the cylinder data  to Savvy to keep an eye on any problem but not sure how to do that either.

Many Thanks, I use the Garmin updates. not the Jepp ones.

Alan

Only nav data goes on the top card. Everything else goes on the bottom. Keep both the MFD and PFD in sync by installing the same revisions on both sides. Otherwise, you'll get error messages and certain features won't work.

Engine data will appear on the top MFD card.

Mine's different: everything is on the bottom cards, and flight data gets written to top MFD slot.  I tried putting nav data on a separate card and got all sorts of errors.

My understanding from others is that the bottom cards don't write to the G1000's memory but rather are read by the  unit, making them vulnerable to card failure, but in 7 years and ~1000 hours of flying it, I haven't had an issue.  Maybe I'll have it sorted out in a few months at it's annual.

That's bizarre. You'd think that G1000s on a given software version would all work the same. Perhaps it's serial number-specific though. When you install new cycles, does Garmin prompt you to insert the top or bottom card for nav data?

I can confirm this. Nav data from the top card is copied, so once it's installed, the card doesn't even need to be present. Interestingly though, my top MFD card just failed in such a way that the G1000s couldn't read any of the other cards when the top MFD card was plugged in.

Only software versions .34 and up record data.
I also believe to upgrade to .34 you need waas, but I may be mistaken and .37 is the one that requires waas.
Bottom cards and one top card is required. The top card is nav data, the bottom two are the remainder of the DB. The nav data card does not need to stay in the g1000. But both displays have to be updated with the data at each cycle. Top and bottom.

I use the top 2 slots in the PFD and MFD. When updating the nav data on the MFD I pull out the check list in the top slot and replace it when I’m finished with the update.

No it doesn't.  the updater app warns about it but does say some systems are everything on one card.

Not mine.  All DB info in top card of the MFD.  Nothing in PFD.  FS510 in bottom MFD.  I’ve stopped using it. Stupid slow.

Ya, you have the nxi. The 510 cross fills, that isn’t compatible with the legacy g1000

the DB concierge didn’t work well for me at all in my ultra. I still brought the 510 back home for updates.

Hi Everyone, Still not sure exactly what to do. I use four SD cards. I have been putting NAV data on both top cards and all but NAV on MFD bottom and same on PFD bottom except Flight Charts. This has worked but I am not sure where I could look for engine data that should, I think , turn up on MFD top. Thanks all but they differ so not really clear and Garmin web sites are no help. If I could get the engine data in MFD. to SD card  it would be useful. Only put Flight Charts in MFD bottom.

Thank

When your MFD starts up, what software version do you have?

It will start with 401. Then it will have two numbers after that.

Late to the party, but isn’t there something in the manual that talks about data logging? We pull the data from the (Diamond) G1000s at our club for various reasons, and just follow the instructions in the manual. (The graphic is from the manual; the note on top is mine.)

Both my Bravo and Acclaim I put the two garmin cards in the bottom of the MFD and PFD, the generic  card NAV data  in the top of the MFD which also records the flight engine data which I periodically download to Savvy SCHLLC mentions.

Attached are the messages I get when I update my data cards from Garmin Aviation Database Manager. It's explicit on which card to insert. The first screenshot is nav data, second is everything else.

A couple of things I learned recently from having a card fail:

- Per Garmin, any generic card 8GB or smaller should work. I found this wasn't the case because the first card I bought did not work, but this card ended up working.

- Cards can be created from scratch using Garmin Aviation Database Manager. Format as MS-DOS FAT-32. Make sure to back up your checklist and engine log first.

- My "Garmin" specialty supplemental cards were actually just SD adapters with the Garmin logo on them but with a SanDisk microSD card inside. I purchased these years ago, so they came from Garmin that way.

Data logging is not available for older software versions.

There are several good reasons to update, and this is one of them. Other good reasons: ABS-B traffic, ADS-B weather, geo-referenced approach plates.

You cannot upgrade to the latest version/versions without waas.
Its either .34 or .37.
you would need .37 to be able to toggle between Adsb weather or xm, otherwise you have to select one or the other on setup and that’s all you have.
