Haha indeed it was a celebratory Cuban.  Also, they are legal here in Europe. Starting that engine was the best moment! I love direct drive engines!

Where there any big surprises with this restoration? Lessons learned etc. you make it look like it was simple and straight forward. 

The only surprise was that the front gear was cracked in two stressed areas, most likely due to the hard landings. It was only visible after thorough and very close inspection. The gear was taken off and welded properly, then painted again. I learned that they wouldn’t powder cote it as the powder could hide cracks! Also I learned that EVERYTHING ALWAYS takes longer than expected. Other than that I was very lucky in the naivety I approached the whole project. Nothing really went sideways. Even the fuel tanks were not leaking except that 1 typical screw on the right side in the stepping area of the wing.
I also learned that avionics can be very expensive if you want to go with a little bit of a modern equipment. The plane is still in the czech republic for avionics upgrade and I haven’t received the final bill…. I guess this could be the material for another episode…

I’m pretty sure those gear legs should be heat treated after welding. Did they do that?

The shop which did that has a very good reputation in europe and is specialised doing things like that. I am sure that they did it right and judging by the price I payed the also gold plated it

Absolutely the most enjoyable thread I’ve ever followed on MS! Best parts: when you sat in the cockpit and had to turn off the camera “what have I done I bought a Piece of $h!+. Better part when she fired and the joy and elation flowed through the video!!! I’ve had those moments with mine as well! Truly a difficult process to take on! The Time and logistics of finding mechanics, getting them on site, I’m sure getting parts is a nightmare etc. I enjoyed you slaying the nay sayers from the beginning of the thread. Reminds me of a scene from an American Classic: Kelly’s Heroes “what’s with all the negativity Moriarty?” Shows what determination great German mechanics and faith in a Mooney can accomplish!  I can’t wait to follow your future endeavors!

One other question, the two mechanics that went and mounted the engine and prop and all, that was all done in two days only?  That is incredible.  I can't even get my oil changed here in two days...

They looked like they were enjoying the project as much as you were.  Best of luck to you and enjoy it....I lived in Switzerland for two years and I sure wish I had gotten an airplane while I was there.  It was such a beautiful country and while I enjoyed taking the train to Germany, France, Italy, and the UK it would have been even better if I could have flown on the weekends.

Since you have rebuilt the wing tip…

Know that there are new lights becoming available for that area…

Specifically, the recog light…

The existing light is so hot… it starts to melt that fancy new lens within minutes after landing.

That’s a valuable information. SoI will put it in the after landing checklist. „Recognition lights - off“
