29 years since overhaul. Good or no good?

The advantage of buying a motor that's 5-10 years old with very low time (say less than 500hrs) and possible activity is that you can get a decent engine shop to split the case for you, new cam and tappets, rework your cylinders all for about 8k (assuming your crank is ok, and the records on your motor show that your cylinders are first run).  Then you've basically got an overhaul for a third of the price.  Of course, you should take a look inside to make sure All's well in there prior to purchase.  honestly, it also gives a buyer a great negotiating point.  Is the motor magically unsafe or worn out just because it has sat for a while, i don't think so.... Only an inspection can tell you that.

Its important to remember that you don't HAVE to perform a full overhaul or exchange on a low time motor (although lycoming/continental would have you think so)... You can save a bunch of money by repairing it and get basically the same product back.
