As I understand it, no.  I am equipped identically.  At one time there was support from Mooney to do this, at a very expensive cost.  I think it also included removing the STEC and replacing it with the G700 autopilot.

I went to do a software upgrade a couple of years back, couldn't do it because my G1000 is non-WAAS.  I was told then that the ability to convert to WAAS had come and gone.  I don't think Mooney knows how many Ovations and Acclaims are out there equipped like this.  I have been told anywhere from 45-60 at a minimum.

Adding WAAS to a non-WAAS G1000 plane has been written up plenty of times…

There are two GIA# that get swapped for the non-WAAS…. Ones…

Last seen, DMax had some on a shelf…

The inventory probably doesn’t stay around very long…

It was hugely expensive when it first came out…

The STC is a Garmin and Mooney owned challenge…

Stand by for somebody with actual knowledge of the system… I always invite @Deb for explaining these details… (G1000 WAAS question) :)

Best regards,

Last November (2021) Paul Maxwell quoted a little over $30,000 to convert a G1000 to WAAS, which if it's available is still a good idea since your airplane will be discounted by a similar amount if it doesn't have it when you go to sell it. And if you wait until then, you're paying for it and you never got to enjoy it.

Lance, was that quote for new hardware? I thought all of those were gone, but the conversion was still possible if one was able to scrounge the boxes on the used/salvage market.

A thread by Diamond owners says that Garmin will not service used/salvage GIA 63W that owners scrounge as a way to backdoor an upgrade to WAAS.  They will only service it if it was installed new in your plane.  The last post highlights that Garmin is able to establish the chain of custody from their records so there is no way to fool them.

Those were used units. I went back and checked my messages. It was $32,500 installed. The only GIA-63W boxes that are compatible with the G1000 Mooneys are the ones that end in -01 or -20.

It is still possible to upgrade O2 GX with STEC-55X if you find a pair of GIA63W with correct revision (see post above).

  • I did the update on my N913KS at ACG in 2020 (see my PIREP on MS).
  • Graf Aviator did the update on N66YY last year at ACG.
  • Just recently Justus at ACG upgraded N60TY and N192JM.

All stated aircraft are 2004/2005/2006 O2 GX with G1000 & STEC-55X.

To put a long story short:

If you are able and willing to find the units and a capable MSC you can do the upgrade - still in 2022, even in good old Europe..

Best,

Matthias

That is disgusting behavior by Garmin. They're leaving a big opportunity for Avidyne and others to take market share. The ongoing cost of government data resold by Garmin and Jepp is another thing that grinds my gears too.

I think the example in that link is a unicorn. If a Garmin dealer determines that the GIA63Ws are airworthy and they install them and then down the road later need to have them serviced I doubt that it would be a problem, otherwise we would surely have heard about it by now on an actual install rather than a theoretical.
