I have KLN 94 in my Bravo.  The plane came from the factory with an 89b.  I want to start downloading database updates from a tablet to the 94.  I have been using an card reader.  I think the Bravo is wired to allow updating  what I need to know is what jack is required to plug into the airplane.  Also does anyone have the correct cable to use.  Thanks in advance

Walt I have been going through this drill of updates for most of the year. First in order to update over the Internet be certain that you have firmware revision 102 or 103 as shown on startup otherwise you can't download through the Internet. Second that plug only works with an older laptop with a serial port & earlier version of windows. You might find it much easier to use the Sandisk SDDR31 but be sure it is for the KlN94. Maybe that is what you are using as a card reader? Personally I have the Sandisk as well as two database cards and the Lone Star docking station. That allows me to do updates in the office or at home with or without the KLN 94.

I appreciate the information from both of you.  The serial device for sale on ebay will not help much.  At present I do use a SDDR-31 but have had trouble getting the database to load onto the card through the SDDR-31.  Talked to King several months ago they wanted me to contact the seller of the Imagemate even though after I bought  it I sent it to King for the firmware (circa 2004).  My Database loader is version 1.5 and I use a Samsung Q1 for downloads.  I have a plug installed in the airplane which is marked Data Loader (installed at Mooney factory).  I guess I am looking for the cable that fits that plug and is usb on the other end.  I looked at a pinout for the 94 and think the plug is soldered to pin 3 (941).  The pinout calls it Data Loader RS 232 IN.  I wonder if this jogs any memories.  The plug is installed along side the copilot left knee. It is just arond the corner from the flap switch.  Any advice to help me get a simpler (cleaner) update process would be appreciate.

Walt Does "At present I do use a SDDR-31 but have had trouble getting the database to load onto the card through the SDDR-31" mean you can't get the updates or just sometimes can not get them? When I bought my A/C earlier this year it came with the KLN 94 that had been upgraded from an 89 B but both the avionics shop & me had trouble getting the updates & I had to resort to exchanging the database cards with King. What I mean is that it appeared to download data but would not work in the KLN 94. Subsequently I have gone thru the drill to find that 1) My KLN 94 had firmware V. 101 even though it was sold well after the new firmware 02/03 was available. That 01 version has a known bug that will not allow downloads to properly be installed via the internet. So check the firmware first. 2) The KLN 94 is set up with the data port on the front. In my research there is no other way that I have found to use a separate cable thru the A/C 89B dataport to update the KLN 94 except with that same serial cable although I understand there were some iterations of 89 B plugs that had differant panal plugs but still were a serial cable. King & Sandisk parterned with a Bendix/King firmware specific for the SDDR-31 & is required to get that thing to work. Since you indicated yours had been uodated by King I'd suspect a KLN 01 firmware issue or a defective SDDR-31 unit or an incompatible PC or a bad datacard. You might try the King loader pgm on an older desktop PC. I am really only addressing the issue of your data base download difficulty. I really do not think you will be able to get that data port on the A/C panal to update with anything but the same serial cable that is used for the KLN 94. You might try a usb to serial adapter but call King for their suggestion as I know from other threads that not all adapters work with the download pgm.  This is old technology & it has not been updated by King except with the Sandisk usb option. BTW One can only use the SDDR 31 as other San Disk products will not work.

Chis,

Thank you very much for the information.  Years back I had a problem with the card having worn out sockets and connection was intermittent.  I thought I was having the same problem but King said no.  This troubleshoot is going to have to take second place for a while.  I just overhauled the engine to cover a screwup by Lycoming.  They produced a bunch of crankshafts that wanted to get out of service.  I found a small oil leak today that I need to attend to pronto.  I sure would like to catch the guy at Lycoming that caused this problem.  I will take your advice to heart as soon as I get this oil leak fixed.  When it rains it pours.

The data port on my old 89B uses a rather unique 1/4 inch phone like plug on one end and a 9 pin serial on the other.  I bought the cable for $50 from King when I had it installed.  I now use it to program a friends 89b. I use a laptop with USB  to serial adapter.  After trying a few, King recommended a KEYSPAN adapter and it works just fine.

Walt,

I used to take the KLN94 out of the dash cradle by removing the small allen screw right above it in the middle.  Then I would remove the unit from the dash and take it home.  Goes in and out very easily.  Then I used the attached cable to plug into the rear of the unit and into a cigarette lighter in my truck to power it up.  Then I used the Keyspan USB and cable to insert into the face of the unit and downloaded the database.  I remember the KLN program for the computer required me to use a strange port setting like USB6 or something to recognize the cable and the KLN.  It worked well and did not require me to use the planes battery during the 10 minute download.

See the cables attached.  If these are the ones you are looking for I will make you a deal....Free.  HoHoHo.

Not sure if he ever took you up on this offer, but if it's still available I'd be happy to pay you for it.
