Don Heene Posted December 13, 2020 Report Posted December 13, 2020 Hey Mooney spacers, I think I'm going to have my prop (Hartzell) IRAN or overhauled. Nothing has been done to it since new (1996) 3 blade with about 700 hours on it now. (Of course annuals greased the fittings, blade tracking and checks) Last greased with Aeroshell 6 per maintenance manual at annual in Aug. 2020. Has a small leak on one of the blades and looks like it has a fine mist on the cowling (very tiny brown spots) This happened on the last 2 flights. Already wiped it off have no pics. I think this might be oil and not grease coming from the blade. Looking for a shop close to Lincoln airport in Northern California, any recommendations? Thanks in advance, Don Quote
Andy95W Posted December 13, 2020 Report Posted December 13, 2020 The best person to involve in this conversation is @Cody Stallings, who owns a prop shop and gives very good advice. One of the things he’s said over the years is that Aeroshell #6 breaks down over time and will separate out the oil component, which then gets spit out. Aeroshell #5 is much better and doesn’t separate, and is chemically compatible with the #6, so it can be swapped out a little at a time each annual. The only negative is that #5 is not usable in the same temperature range. The limit for the #5 is (I believe) -20°C, which means for an M20C isn’t much of a restriction. But Cody will be along soon and correct anything I said wrong. 2 1 Quote

MB65E Posted December 13, 2020 Report Posted December 13, 2020 American propeller is great! if Brian Sullivan still works on Piston propellers he’s awesome too. Avoid SMO propeller whatever you do. -Matt 1 Quote
47U Posted December 13, 2020 Report Posted December 13, 2020 Sporadic oil mist on my windscreen was the crankshaft seal. It had lost adhesion to the case. American Propellor is top-notch. And they will pick up and deliver your prop from LHM. They overhauled my 3-blade McCauley last summer. It needed some extra work resulting in almost 5 amu before I got it back. That’s almost double what it cost me 10 years ago. There’s also Stockton Propeller, but I don’t have any intel on them. Someone here might have experience, or maybe Top Gun can provide an outside opinion. Quote
RobertGary1 Posted December 13, 2020 Report Posted December 13, 2020 I’ve always used Stockton propeller. They seem first rate. They’ll usually pick up. Quote

Cody Stallings Posted December 15, 2020 Report Posted December 15, 2020 American is a top notch shop in your area. With the calendar time of your propeller, may have a hard time with some shop just doing an IRAN. 1 1 Quote

One of the shops listed in this thread won't even do an ECI unless they overhaul your prop themselves. -Robert Quote
