corn_flake Posted January 16, 2022 Report Posted January 16, 2022 Here is my solution for ground transport. 70 miles range at 20 mph. You could probably milk more than 70 miles if you keep it under 15 mph. 2 Quote

takair Posted January 16, 2022 Report Posted January 16, 2022 That is certainly cool and “right sized” for a Mooney….but I’m pretty sure I’d be going home in a cast. Even if I’m not too big for it (based on your own description), I’m not sure I’m nimble enough… 1 Quote

The KingSong 16X is rated up to 300lb. 3 hours ago, Marauder said: I would love to see one that was actually a bicycle. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk Pro I tried to find a bicycle solution, but came up empty. Few problems with two wheels solution. - In order to fit in Mooney's cargo hold, the wheel is usually 16" or smaller. Smller wheels aren't suitable for longer range riding. Add a bit of hilly terrain, you will need to be a pretty shape as well. - I also need to be able to carry at least two ground vehicles, possibly three. This pretty much rule out any two wheel vehicles. Unicycle fits the mission perfectly. At the end, I was able to get my entire family properly trained on either unicycle or Onewheel. It took my kids all but couple of hours on unicycle. My wife (age 46) took a few days. The total training hours for her was probably 6 hours. Fully geared up. No injury reported. If electric unicycle isn't your thing. OneWheel is a good alternative. They cost more, but at reduced range. However, if you done skateboard, snowboard or any board sport, you should be able to learn to ride a OneWheel in as little as one hour. I knew how to snowboard, and it only took me about 15 minutes to get comfortable on OneWheel - https://onewheel.com/ Regardless which way you go, helmet is a must. I have the GT on order but doesn’t ship until Jan 27th. Can’t wait!! My boys got the Pint X for X-Mas and that thing is fun. It has me thinking I maybe should have got and PX vs the GT. I think its just the wait that killing. Quote
carusoam Posted January 17, 2022 Report Posted January 17, 2022 There is a family cruising around my neighborhood with these things… They sure make it look easy…. +1 for the helmet… avoiding brain injuries is much better than recovering from them… -a- Quote

I am a bit worried about carrying large lipo packs like in hover boards, electric scooters, etc in my airplane. I think the lipo myth has been debunked. Check out the High Sierra Fly in or just about any bush plane out there has one strapped to their wing now. I pretty sure the early lipo battery problems were more do to high temperatures. I might be wrong. Quote

I might be wrong. Yes and no. Since I have been working with lipo for almost 16 years. I can share a bit insight. It's extremely rare individual lipo cell would catch on fire all on its own. Lipo fire are usually cause by the following. - Damage to one of the cells in a pack. This can cause internal short and subsequently thermal runaway Most devices are either built with metal cylindrical cells or manufacturer could enclose the soft cells in hard casing. - Soft lipo cells do expand and contract during the normal usage cycle. If they are enclosed in hard casing, there must be extra room for the anticipated size change. The most famous device that did not have enough room is Samsung's Galaxy Note 9. Those devices were ban on commercial flight and later recalled by Samsung. - Lack of Battery Management (BMS) system included in the device. In the early days, some Chinese manufacturer would try to save cost and not include a BMS. Without a BMS, one of cells would eventually over discharge. This is not all cell are created equal. Internal resistance varies from cell to cell. The next time the user try to charge the device, the damage cell would charge to a higher voltage. This will further damage the cell. At some point, the damage be so severe that the cell would overheat and cause a thermal runway - fire... - External short outside of the battery back, but in side the device. This is similar to electrical fire in an aircraft. Bad cable management in the device, high current in the wire, and mix that with vibration and chafing.... Sorry for the long winded answer. In short, is the problem resolved. Yes and no. It sorta depend on the manufacturer. Buy your lipo powered device from a reputable manufacturer, you should be good. OneWheel is built using metal cylinder cells and enclosed in hard casing with a BMS. Cable routing is to notch. I have yet to hear one catch on fire. 4 Quote
