JimB Posted March 27, 2019 Report Posted March 27, 2019 So here goes my first real issue with the new to me M20F. During landing roll out if you don't keep a lot of back pressure and weight off the nose the front end chatters a bit until you reach probably 20-30 mph. Even worse if you apply much braking at all. It's only during landing and no issues during take off. She still tracks straight with no darting around. No real problems during the pre-buy and I didn't have a chance to take a closer look at it on Saturday but have been doing a little research online. Just worn linkages/bushings or nose donuts or should I be looking at SB M20-202? The SB seems to address instability and darting around during takeoff and landing and I don't really have any issue with that.
carusoam Posted March 27, 2019 Report Posted March 27, 2019 Sounds like something is loose... Be looking for effects of wear... the 8 second ride, authored by DMax a while ago, covers many issues that come from various aspects of wear on the nose gear... Another thing to check is the proper angle that the nose gear is set at... Got a go pro? I wouldn’t want to fly it until somebody takes a look at it... and identifies what is no longer correct... Nose wheel chatter isn’t normal. Too much at risk if something breaks... PP thoughts only, not a mechanic... Best regards, -a-
cliffy Posted March 27, 2019 Report Posted March 27, 2019 Check the tire pressure and then put it on jacks and check for how lose the nose wheel steering is by turning the nose tire side to side and fore and aft. Much more than a few degrees means the linkage up in the nose wheel well is worn. You can see how lose it is when you twist it side to side. The main bearing for the big steering bolt may also be worn. LASAR has all the parts you need. Also check the tightness of the wheel bearings. 2
