MrRodgers Posted November 4, 2018 Report Posted November 4, 2018 Hi everyone. I've got a 67 M20 F. I'd like to upgrade my landing light from the old (burned out) halogen bulb. What does everyone suggest for a bright and long lasting replacement? Cost is a concern but from what I have seen I expect between $300.00 - $600.00... OUCH. Any less expensive solutions and is there a need to involve a mechanic to replace or can it easily be done on my own? Thanks, Michael Quote
gsxrpilot Posted November 4, 2018 Report Posted November 4, 2018 Get an LED one from @LANCECASPER and install it yourself in minutes. Worst case scenario, you have to remove the lower cowl to get installed. Installing the light will still just take a couple of minutes... the cowl might take longer. 1 Quote

LANCECASPER Posted November 4, 2018 Report Posted November 4, 2018 The PAR36 size (4.5" diameter) are listed on Ebay here: Landing Light https://www.ebay.com/itm/113147253505 Taxi Light https://www.ebay.com/itm/112787661034 For Mooneyspace members, if you want to order directly from me rather than going through Ebay, I'll cover the shipping costs if you send $60 per light (Paypal Friends & Family - so neither of us pays a fee) to my paypal address lance99@aol.com. Include your shipping address on the Paypal notes. If you have a PAR46 (5.5" diameter) they are $80 and I'll cover the shipping. https://www.ebay.com/itm/113147253935 1 1 Quote

Wheelen PAR 46 Utility/tractor light on Amazon is $100 Quote
carusoam Posted November 4, 2018 Report Posted November 4, 2018 Michael, The 67 F originally had a GE incandescent bulb... Which Halogen light do you have Now? Just to set the expectation of a new LED properly... Hundreds of dollars for a bulb like a BoomBeam might still provide more light. Any of the bulbs mentioned here will be better than the GE bulb... they only bring a few good things to light, for a short period of time... especially when mounted horizontally... Best regards, -a- Quote

Best regards, -a- So much great information. I was at the hangar today and I didn't measure the diameter but it is a landing light that I also use for Taxi so based on what I am seeing above it might be a Par 46. Is there any difference between the Par 36 and Par 46 besides the diameter? Sorry for the newbie questions but I am in the early stages of the learning curve. Quote
Yetti Posted November 4, 2018 Report Posted November 4, 2018 My F uses the PAR 46. Usually the Mooney with a taxi and a landing light (wide and narrow beam) use the PAR 36 Quote
carusoam Posted November 4, 2018 Report Posted November 4, 2018 Big light is in the cowl... Smaller light fits the wing’s leading edge. A few Mooney’s have changed to smaller lights in the cowl. They probably have a ring to adjust for the smaller size... The size is literally dimensions in inches... expressed in a semi archaic fashion for the 16ths...? PAR46... Parabolic 4” and 6/16ths.... And having Lance on board is the MS method of getting the best price from AS... Unless your AS account has been ordering a lot of stuff! PP thoughts only, not a mechanic. Best regards, -a- Quote

I will order the 46 in the morning. Thanks for all of the help everyone. I really appreciate it. Quote
Mooney-Mark Posted November 4, 2018 Report Posted November 4, 2018 I installed a Whelen LED in my C. Took about 15 minutes. Paid about $160.00 for it at Oshkosh this past summer. They say that this one is FAA approved, if that is a concern. Works great! Quote
Raptor05121 Posted November 4, 2018 Report Posted November 4, 2018 Give a search on the site, we've had a big old discussion about various models and manufacturers a few weeks ago 1 Quote

Best regards, -a- Anthony, Close but not quite on the bulb size. PAR 46 is 46 eighths of an inch in diameter and a PAR 36 is 36 eighths in diameter. Clarence Quote
Bob_Belville Posted November 4, 2018 Report Posted November 4, 2018 With the LASAR mod that moved the oil cooler from the front I have 2 lights in the cowl ('66E). I bought 2 different PAR 46 lamps - a "spot" for landing and a "flood" for taxi. 6 Quote
