So.... Mrs. Brye was right...

What did she have to say about simple questions that have complex answers...?

1) Sounds like a second AP computer could be kept on hand...

2) It isn’t a simple slide in replacement as it has electrical and static plumbing for its alt hold...

3) Probably requires a mechanic to do the wrenching and documentation...

4) The more common failure seems to be the HSI, AI, and the servos... which would take up some UL if you are going to carry spares along... these parts have a tendency to wear and get dirty...

5) All of the spares would weigh less than a single co-pilot... and could be installed by a qualified mechanic...

6) Is there any tuning that is needed if spares were installed at the next available maintenance hangar? Or just mount and connect as needed?

7) Better bring the installation manuals along...

Peter,

Is that what you were asking?

The BK AP is so integrated with four servos, HSI, AI, and other boxes... if the computer senses a servo down... the computer probably shuts the AP down... as it gives the audible alert...

So switching from AP1 to an AP2 is just a bit more complex than switching a Nav1 to Nav2 to the ship’s HSI and AP...

Would you be interested in bringing a spare AP along as a replacement...  Lots of older BKs are coming available soon...

Possibly a new BK AP coming soon... have you seen that?

Best regards,

-a-

This is interesting question in the Skyview.   The screen and the CPU are one.  If you have two screen/CPU and one CPU goes down, does the Autopilot remain operational.

....at least the KS270 pitch servo can be removed without removing the pitch capstan and bridles.  If you happen to have a spare servo you can swap it out in about an hour.

We bolted in a replacement servo today and George is again happy.

For adding a second A/P you will need at least three transfer relays that can impair the total reliability of the system. Just keep it simple and add another engine to your Mooney.;)
