Tommy Posted September 10, 2017 Report Posted September 10, 2017 Since my engine overhaul back in 2015, I have noticed that the oil pressure is pegged to the right (above 100psi) in my 81J and oil temp is sitting between 165 to 170 during cruise. (180-190 during break in with Aeroshell 100). Is this a cause for concern? I hear that the new Lycoming is now setting at 115psi red line. Is that true? The flight : cruise 8000" OAT 5-degree celcius. LOP 50. The oil: Aeroshell 100W close to 25 hours Engine: 200 hours since overhauled in 2015. Annual in July, compression 76 all cylinders. Oil analysis normal. Oil consumption 1 quart every 8 - 10 hours. Cheers guy!
Guest Posted September 10, 2017 Report Posted September 10, 2017 Tommy, Sometime ago Lycoming raised the oil pressure limit to 115psi, most airframe manufacturers did not follow suit. Before worrying I would make sure that the pressure is accurate, by installing a test gauge in parallel with the OEM gauge. I too have J model which I take care of with lower than expected oil temperature as confirmed on sepperate gauges, it doesn't seem to be causing any issues so far. Clarence
Tommy Posted September 11, 2017 Author Report Posted September 11, 2017 Thanks Clarence! How you install the test gauge and read it off in flight? My factory oil temp reads around 160-165 and my JP700 reads 167 to 170.
Guest Posted September 11, 2017 Report Posted September 11, 2017 I don't know that you can do it in flight, there isn't really a way to route a hose from the engine to the cabin. Few hoses, a gauge and a tee should allow you to verify the OEM gauge and oil pressure reading. Clarence
