Barron Thomas...

Isn't that the guy who wants a couple of thousands to "reserve" the aircraft for you, and you will get your money back when someone else "reserves" it? There are several posts about him on the AOPA forum.

comment on the LORAN part only...

My J model still has a LORAN installed. The units works well where there is signal (like in Canada or close to the US border). I still plan to remove it one day but do have my mind set on what I want to do with the space available.

I never take shortcuts when it comes to safety or meeting regulatory requirements. But I don't mind saving money when I can. I will take out the LORAN at the same time I install that "something".

What was with the whole penchant for red interiors back in the 70s? God, every time I see a plane with a red interior I want to run and hide. And especially the bright color of red that all the plane manufacturers used...it's so garish. (Apologies to anyone who's really a fan of blood-red vinyl.)

OK I stand corrected then....I was actually unaware there were still LORAN signals being broadcast which could be considered reliable for navigation.  I was under the impression the system was dismantled in it's entirety thus rendering the receivers useless. I'm surprised to hear the LORAN systmes still have functionality.

From everything I've read, LORAN-C is completely dead in N. America as of Aug 3, 2010.  If you're getting a signal I would not rely on it as being accurate.  There were five stations that remained in operation after the initial Feb 8, 10 shutdown, but those five are no longer in operation either.

The only remaining LORAN-C signals are those found in Europe that I'm aware of.

As for the equipment still being in the panel, I agree that I wouldn't make a separate trip to an avionics shop just to pull it out.  I'd wait (as I did with mine) until the aircraft went in for something else to save on downtime and cost.

How is it possible that the 70's produced the liesure suit for men, while at the same time creating the mini and maxi skirts for women???

People on this forum are probably going to disagree with me about this but here is my 2 cents...lets assume for a second I own a plane, and that plane still has a LORAN in it, and this LORAN has obviously been inoperable for some time. I could only think of two reasons I would still have that LORAN in my plane.  1) I think the unit looks pretty sitting in my panel taking up space and weight or 2) i dont have the money to pay someone thats capable of removing it.  If you think the later is true then the following questions begs to be asked...what else has been defered or overlooked in the aircraft over time?  My thinking applies to all aircraft for sale and not just this one.
