Gary0747 Posted May 29, 2017 Report Posted May 29, 2017 Does Mooney put their part numbers on standard AN bolts? I have a landing gear bolt that Mooney shows in their parts manual as 914005 but appears to be a standard AN3 bolt.
LANCECASPER Posted May 29, 2017 Report Posted May 29, 2017 Just replace it with the exact AN3 bolt. http://www.aircraftspruce.com/catalog/stpages/anbolts.php
Gary0747 Posted May 29, 2017 Author Report Posted May 29, 2017 As long as someone previous has not made a mistake replacing a Mooney specific part or a NAS bolt with an AN3. It just seemed strange the parts book calls out AN parts by specific number every where else but this location?
RLCarter Posted May 29, 2017 Report Posted May 29, 2017 Which bolt is it, and what does Mooney use for the description?
N201MKTurbo Posted May 29, 2017 Report Posted May 29, 2017 The bolt may have been modified by drilling additional lock wire holes or milling the head for clearance or something. 1
Andy95W Posted May 29, 2017 Report Posted May 29, 2017 It's the bolt that holds the walking beam (bellcrank) at the wing root for the gear retraction system. Gary- I am in the process of doing exactly what you're doing. I called Dan at LASAR parts and he compared the two bolts- one the 914005, the other the AN3 part. He said that except for $40, he could not see any difference. I won't say which one I had him send me. 1
RLCarter Posted May 29, 2017 Report Posted May 29, 2017 I recently ordered new bushings and hardware from LASAR, the bolts sent were NAS bolts, wouldn't work, the grip length was three threads longer, bolts wouldn't have tightened up, tried to match up on Spruce with no joy. Luckily there was a guy on the field that has a large selection of NOS hardware and I was able to match them up. The issue was what was in there was a close tolerance bolt and it now crosses over to the NAS# which wouldn't work. Actually had ordered them twice, first order was totally wrong, second order the bushings were correct but the bolts were wrong, real pain to get corrected.
carusoam Posted May 29, 2017 Report Posted May 29, 2017 The challenge seems to be... 1) Mooney puts their part numbers on everything they sell. 2) whether it gets modified or not. 3) whether it is specific to Mooney from their vendor or not. 4) it could be a specific mooney part. 5) it could be a standard fastener available everywhere... 6) often, the Mooney number has the standard part number in it. But may not reflect any modification that might get done. Tough choices... Best regards, -a-
MB65E Posted May 29, 2017 Report Posted May 29, 2017 There are several examples of NAS hardware in the nose gear hardware. Places where one thinks is AN is installed, it could actually be NAS. Check the book each time. Genuine Aircraft Hardware, in PRB, is awesome to work with. Some of the older NAS items are no longer available. They will work with you to find approate hardware. http://www.gen-aircraft-hardware.com/ -Matt
Gary0747 Posted May 29, 2017 Author Report Posted May 29, 2017 Andy is correct on the part and location. It appears to be an AN3-26A that costs 39 cents from Spuce. I can see no reason for Mooney to put a specific part number on it other than to make more money? The bolt may have been original but at least from 1988 when the plane was last painted. I have had it for 25 years and it has never been changed. One note of caution on using the older parts manuals. Some of the AN bolts have been upgraded to a stronger NAS bolt via Service Bulletins. See M20-212. Not sure if there are others?
