Northern Mooniac Posted March 28, 2017 Report Posted March 28, 2017 Well, I think I made some headway on picking my upgrades. 1. Aspen PFD1000 Pro 2. Flight Stream 210 3. JPI 830 4. Replace the GNS300 with a KX155 that will also slave over to the Aspen This will give me GPS Steering, better engine management and a reliable HSI. Thoughts? Quote

Zwaustin Posted March 28, 2017 Report Posted March 28, 2017 Aspen 1000 is a good little set up, had it in past and loved it. I recommend the aspen and 830 for sure. I have a g600, dual 750's, a 960 JPI and dual adsb out at the moment (not in Mooney) and I think you can wait on the adsb for now if your budget is tight. Who knows how good it will be by 2020 or how cheap.... just food for thought. Quote
Northern Mooniac Posted March 28, 2017 Author Report Posted March 28, 2017 I'm in no rush for adsb. Im in canada so no worries for the next 3 years. I will have adsb in with the flight stream so that will help for trips south of the border. I have the SRXM1 for flying in canada. works great! Quote
gsxrpilot Posted March 28, 2017 Report Posted March 28, 2017 I like it all except for the JPI EDM-830. Either spend the money and get the EDM-900 which allows you to either backup or replace all your engine instruments. Those stock instruments will have to be repaired at some point and the EDM-900 just does away with that issue. Of course the EDM-900 is more expensive. So if you understandably don't want to spend the money, save even more money and get the Insight G2. It gives you better data logging, all probes you need and none you don't, plus excellent fuel management and fuel flow. The RPM and MP in the 830 is redundant since you have to maintain the stock gauges anyway. 2 Quote
Godfather Posted March 28, 2017 Report Posted March 28, 2017 Make sure you get the ea100 at the same time to get rid of the 256. 1 Quote
gsxrpilot Posted March 28, 2017 Report Posted March 28, 2017 Yep, I wouldn't do the Aspen without the EA100. It's all going in and recessed as well. 1 Quote
Northern Mooniac Posted March 28, 2017 Author Report Posted March 28, 2017 eventually I will go to a 900 or a 930, but it has a 700 and 450 fuel, so I can do the trade up program for now. Definitely doing the EA100, also looking at the module to give me altitude pre-select as well. We'll see if it fits into the budget. Quote

I started off with the JPI 830 and it was fine but once the 900s came down in price, having an instrument that can replace the factory instruments is a definite plus. Quote

gsxrpilot Posted March 28, 2017 Report Posted March 28, 2017 Which autopilot do you have? Assuming it's BK since you're getting the EA100, then unless it's the KFC200, there isn't any altitude preselect through Aspen. I have the KFC150 with altitude preselect. It requires an encoding altimeter along with the unit. So even with the Aspen, I'll be keeping my altimeter so that I can also keep the altitude preselect. Quote

This unit is provided under STC from Avionik Straubing. I don't know of anyone who installed one but I really like the concept. Quote
Northern Mooniac Posted March 28, 2017 Author Report Posted March 28, 2017 It's definitely a nice to have, but I don't *need* it lol. Here's hoping! Quote

Yes, exactly what I said. That only works with the KFC200. It will not work with the KFC150, the KAP150 or any other BK autopilot. Quote

Northern Mooniac Posted March 28, 2017 Author Report Posted March 28, 2017 But...they are so nice to have! Hopefully aspen comes out with some sweet deals for sun and fun on friday. for the price of a MFD 1000 you can pretty much buy a whole MFD2500! Just need to add SV. 1 Quote

From what I am hearing Garmin's announcement won't be a major announcement. Hope the source is wrong, I like to see these guys continue to invest in GA's future.Sent from my iPad using Tapatalk Pro Quote

Northern Mooniac Posted March 28, 2017 Author Report Posted March 28, 2017 I saw that, it was basically a Aspen 2500 for the price of a 1000 PFD. Just need to ad SV and you are pretty set! Watched many youtube videos on it last night, pretty amazing stuff! Quote

I am amazed that Aspen isn't doing more with video marketing. There are some stuff from Avweb and the other aviation reporting organizations but it is usually focused on "what's new?". I posted a couple of videos on what it does and doesn't do. When I complete my ADS-B upgrade, I will post more videos on the traffic and weather capabilities on the Aspens. 1 Quote
Northern Mooniac Posted March 28, 2017 Author Report Posted March 28, 2017 Yes, I saw yours. Very impressed. I don't need two CDI's now, which is even better! With the discounts i'll probably get a MFD2000 or maybe the 2500. Definitely want SV but not sure the AOA is worth it. May also just stick with a EFD 1000 Pro too...not sure! Like being a kid in a candy store Quote
Godfather Posted March 28, 2017 Report Posted March 28, 2017 I hope they discount the plus package (rebate) as that includes the SV and AOA. Quote
Northern Mooniac Posted March 28, 2017 Author Report Posted March 28, 2017 I'm hoping the 11,000 discount on the 2500 and throw in SV and AOA. That will make my day! Quote
