I use a device call an IPro Navigator for the Ipad mini.  The ipad has never overheated in flight.  The cover acts as a glareshield for the ipad.

John, I have toyed with the thought of getting this one. How effective is the glare shield when the whole thing is mounted on the yoke? Glare is the biggest issue I have with the iPad in the cockpit so I keep mine propped up against the central column next to the footwell. Ok, but not ideal.

I've got one that I'd let go.

Today while practicing IFR procedures my I-pad overheated and shut down. I think I'm going to buy an I-pad cooler. I think Sportys sell them. Have any of you had problems like this. I had this happen once before in a Beech Debonair, it has lots of glass. Today I was flyng a Piper Twin Comanche. So far I haven't had a heat shutdown in the Mooney. I think the  Mooney has lower seatings and less direct sunlight hitting the I-Pad. -- Darrell  BTW, I wasn't in an actual IFR conditions or doing an IFR approach, just practicing procedures in VFR conditions.

Precisely why I still carry paper.

I have current charts and approach plates on 3 devices: GTN 750, GPS 696, Android tablet w GPilot. Garmin's new package pricing is a great improvement.

With so many different options for iPad mounts, cases and glare protection it's not surprising many of the combinations used are prone to overheating. But given so many of us don't have overheating problems I do believe if you select all your accessories carefully with regarding to overheating you should avoid this issue; even if you have it always on and charging - just in case you do need it as a backup unexpectedly. Mine is securely mounted on the yoke with a MyGo flight mount in my personal aircraft, my preferred method, on Velcro'd around my thigh in students airplanes. Never a problem. I also use the MyGo Flight glass protector and glare shield. I know there are many others solutions that will work too.

This used to happen to me all of the time, but stopped when i did three things.

  • Kept iPAD as vertical as possible, not leaned up towards me aiming away from the sun (on really hot days, I point it down and cover it on initial taxi and runup)
  • I always direct one overhead air vent to blow directly on the ipad
  • Bought an anti glare shield for the ipad. (not sure this does anything about heat, but it does seem to block glare)

But since i've done all three of these things, ipad has not overheated once, even on really warm days. But none the less, even though its tempting, its always my third or lower source for situational awareness, with my eyes and panel mounted equipment being first. the only time ill move it up a source priority is on taxi at an unfamiliar airport, those geo referenced taxi diagrams are gold!

I had a problem with overheating after I land and leave the iPad resting on the passenger seat in the sun.  Putting it on the floor in the passenger side footwell has prevented overheating even when the plane has been sitting in direct sunlight for 6 hours.
