triple8s Posted June 26, 2016 Report Posted June 26, 2016 (edited) Ok, I'be been using an iPad with an AHRS feed as my backup AI and on occation the IPad locks so I am thinking about a Dynon D2 when I saw the Garmin G5. My question is which would be better and is it legal to install the G5 for use as a backup. I want a good stand alone AI that relies on nothing, no vacuum pump, no alternator , atleast long enough to get on the ground. Pros/Cons? Edited June 26, 2016 by triple8s Grammar Quote
Browncbr1 Posted June 26, 2016 Report Posted June 26, 2016 Mike, I just bought a dynon D2. If you want to see how it works, get with me and we can go fly... I'm planning to fly early this week sometime, weather permitting. I'm ready for safety pilot IR anyhow. . Craig Quote
Godfather Posted June 26, 2016 Report Posted June 26, 2016 The G5 is not legal for certified aircraft. I expect to see a G5c released within a year for around twice the price. Quote
MB65E Posted June 26, 2016 Report Posted June 26, 2016 At 2K I think there is still value in the G5C unit. The next cheapest solid state certified unit is around 2600 and it's only attitude. I hope they certify the G5. I'll buy one! -Matt Quote
orionflt Posted June 26, 2016 Report Posted June 26, 2016 A Friend of mine ordered the G-5 as a back up for his Baron, we talked to the avionics shop in depth about what would be allowed and how it can be installed. The FSDO that oversee the shop said that the G-5 could be installed as a standby instrument and could be hooked into the pitot static system. they also said that they considered it a minor mod and only a log book entry would be required for the work. Garmin is currently back ordered for the G-5 otherwise it would have been installed last week. If there are no complications with his install, I will do the same thing once I save up for it Brian 2 Quote
Pictreed Posted June 26, 2016 Report Posted June 26, 2016 Garmin is back logged on some of my comm equipment too. I'd like to se some install pics. It might be a good option. A back up AI has been on my list too. Didn't Mid Contenent have a certified unit? Tim Quote

A back up AI has been on my list too. Didn't Mid Contenent have a certified unit? Tim MidContinent has an excellent electric AI called the LifeSaver. It is expensive, but it has functioned perfectly in my airplane. You can order it with a back-up battery (also expensive), and an inclinometer that acts as a turn and bank ball. I am certain it is certified to replace the Turn Indicator, and the AI Is a bonus. Still, an EFIS presentation will provide more data, and the Dynon, Gamin and Scandia units will fit in the same size standard instrument hole. For what it is worth the Dynon D1 and D2 units are considered "portable", but they have a clever snap in panel mounts that are not hooked up to the pitot static system, but in an emergency you get a decent horizon and good pitch information. Also MidContinent has a larger EFIS box called a SAM. . 1 Quote
Jerry 5TJ Posted June 27, 2016 Report Posted June 27, 2016 I have the L3 ESI2000 as backup, installed 2012. The recently introduced ESI500 has more features for half the price. They, like G5, connect to pitot static to give IAS and barometric altitude. The D2 is cheaper still and provides GPS ground speed and GPS altitude, as does Stratus2 and GDL39. Any of these are far better than a turn coordinator. All will work in any attitude, unlike many mechanical AI gyros. As my #3 Attitude gyro, FS210 displayed on iPad and/or Garmin796 is going in this summer. All turbojets have 3, shouldn't we? (Ref: 14 CFR 91.205, 135.159, 121.305) Quote
ArtVandelay Posted June 27, 2016 Report Posted June 27, 2016 Am I reading your ammeter correctly, you are pulling 30 amps with just avionics? Quote
Bennett Posted June 27, 2016 Report Posted June 27, 2016 No, I hardly pull much amperage in normal flight. I just turned on the master and avionics switch to take a photo of the panel. Not sure how the amp meter is wired in, but with the engine running, I see very little amps flowing, and I have never had a problem. Interesting observation, though, and I will check this out the next time I am at the airplane. Quote

I'd never look back!! -Matt Quote
orionflt Posted June 27, 2016 Report Posted June 27, 2016 I have already requested a copy, When I get it I will share it Brian Because the G-5 is backordered it did not get installed with the GTX 345, the wiring has been installed so when the G-5 arrives it just has to be put in place and connected to the pitot static system. I'm going to grab copies of the sign off and letter once it is completed. once I have them I post them for those interested but I would like to see a few installs go through quietly so we have a precedence set if it gets questioned down the road. 3 Quote
1964-M20E Posted June 28, 2016 Report Posted June 28, 2016 For those with the Avidyne IFD 540 GPS/NAV/COM the IFD 550 is coming out sometime in the future with ARS and can be had for an addition $5,000 you also get synthetic vision too. Still weighing if I want to go that route or some other route. Quote
