Anyone know what cowl fasteners these are?

Can anyone tell me what cowl fasteners these are? The parts manual says Camlock 4200 Receptacle, the picture doesn't match the parts manual so it must have an upgraded cowl.

Welcome aboard D.

The camlocks are the 1/4 turn fasteners that are used for parts of the cowl that are often removed.

You may also have a couple of Dzus fasteners that are holding the oil fill door closed down.

What year is your plane?

My 65C got it's fasteners replaced with the stainless version.  The ones accross the top collected water and rusted until the screwdriver ruined them.

The parts manual is a great place to find the number and length of the appropriate fasteners.  Some are longer because they go through multiple layers of sheet metal.

one part is the fastener,. The other part (grommet) is in the sheet metal.  A special tool is used for each part.

Your cowl seems to be a bit different than other C/Ds I'm familiar with.  The guppy mouth seems to be somewhat updated?

Do you have the hardware that came out of the hole?  (Post a picture)

have you been to the Aircraft Spruce website.  They have the camlocks and Dzus fasteners pictured with the various lengths and screw driver type heads.

let us know how far you get...

It's a 63, I'm not where I can inspect the plane, I am picking it up next weekend and hopefully going to ferry it home. Some older pics I have actually look to be just screws. Don't want to get stranded because of some hardware.

Wonder if that is an ARI cowl? Look to see if you can find any pictures posted by Bob Belville. I believe he has that cowling.

Consider going through the photo sections of Cs and Ds in this site.  The side plates of the C cowl are held in with the mod fasteners.

The locations that are in this photograph, I think, may be away from the easily removed side plates (?). In that case they are most likely screws.  Buy a collection of sheet metal screws, machine screws and small devices that sheet metal screws go into....

Aircraft Spruce can be your friend...

I can't identify the cowl, it's similar to Bobs ARI but not quite the same. Almost looks like just screws and not camlocks.

The 65C cowl parted along a line where this cowl shows a line at prop.

Older planes are more likely to have screws.  The M20B had more standard screws and fewer specialized parts. And no removable side plates.

pre-purchase inspections often provide tons of photographs. Were you there for the PPI?

The screws which held the cowl side panels on were normally 8Rx1/2 PK screws.  The ARI fairings which I've seen had AN526-823R8 screws.  4000 series Camlocs came in 1965.

The inlets are close to my ARI but a little different. And I don't think I've seen a cowl with the row of fasteners running on top like that.   

I've bought replacement 1/4 fasteners from Sky Bolt: 

For my '66E I needed CLOC SK40S5-3S and SK40S5-6S. (The 6S are longer for where the sheet metal is extra thick.

You'll probably want the SK-4P3 CLOC fastener tooling (plyers)

No Camlocs on this vintage, it's all PK screws.  The battery door as on your E is Southco 1/4 turn, but again not Camloc brand.

He'll need a handful of #8 screw and Tinnerman nuts and a good #2 Phillips screwdriver.

Clarence, I'm guessing that is those older Mooneys that caused owners and mechanics to groan about the number of screws on a Mooney cowl. To say nothing of the belly.

I only have 10 screws to remove the top cowl.

It's what keeps Mooney maintainers happy.  We spend so much of our time screwing.
