ArtVandelay Posted April 4, 2016 Report Posted April 4, 2016 My starter is failing to engage, so I spray it with carb cleaner a couple of times and followed up with dry silicon spray. Seems better but just did it again...is this a starter that is failing or should I hit it some more? Quote
Yetti Posted April 5, 2016 Report Posted April 5, 2016 Original Presolite starter? The bendix will start to fail. It is an $15.00 part at NAPA. It is a big enough pain to change out (have to pull the alternator to get to the 2 backside bolts) that should probably replace with high torque which will spin the prop faster. I went with B&C more than the Plane Power, but is supposed to have real bearings vs bushings. B& C has a 2000 hour inspection. Per the POH Hand propping is not recommended. Quote
ArtVandelay Posted April 5, 2016 Author Report Posted April 5, 2016 Yea, it's the bendix, I gather the Skytech 149-NL is the cats meow for the 360 Lycoming. Quote
Guest Posted April 5, 2016 Report Posted April 5, 2016 Low voltage will cause the same thing. Sky Tec has a nice troubleshooting chart on their web site which you can use to figure it out. Clarence Quote

Clarence Expand In my case, it's free wheeling, the starter spins very fast, no prop movement, I bump-push the starter key and I can get it to engage, so far it's been on hot starts, Quote
N201MKTurbo Posted April 5, 2016 Report Posted April 5, 2016 To get it going for a while longer, clean it real good with red brake parts cleaner ( TCE ) let it dry and spray it with dry moly lube. It is hard to get the lube into the big screw threads, so try to get it into the nooks and crannies. You might crank the starter to get it engaged before spraying the lube. Have your wife buy you a Sky Tec for Christmas. Quote
